Abstract

Abstract: A Comparative Study Between The Effect Of Summarizing And DRTA Strategies on Students’ Reading Comprehension. Reading is an action that urges learner to draw in with the writings so as to fabricate significance, handle the primary thoughts, realities, and data introduced in the text. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two strategies, i.e., Summarizing and DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) Strategies. This study was carried out at the tenth- grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Kota Bengkulu. The design was a quasi-experiment. The sample consisted of two classes; one was taught by summarizing strategy and another by DRTA strategy. The instrument was a reading test, which was tried-out; the reliability was 0.880 (very high). The hypotheses testing result showed there was no significant difference between both classes on all aspects and at post-test, there was no significant difference in whole reading comprehension, on the aspect of making inference and vocabulary. However, summarizing strategy was found to be more effective on the aspect of finding the main idea with the statistical value was 0.002 while DRTA strategy was found to be a more effective strategy on the aspect of identifying specific information with the statistical value was 0.000.

Abstract

An Integrated English Syllabus is a syllabus that integrate one to several language skills of learning and teaching process. They cover elements of English skills, English materials, learning techniques, and so on. In this study, the researcher use Research and Development method by Sugiyono (2010). The purposes of this study are to find out the English skills and the English materials that really needed by Marine Science Students. In addition, focuses on developing an Integrated Syllabus with Marine Science context. In designing Integrated Syllabus the researcher use integrated model by Richard (2001). To collect the data the researcher use interview and questionnaire. The parcipants are 1 English lecturer, 1 Marine Science Lecturer, 2 stakeholders (Water and Marine Police at Pulau Baai Bengkulu and Employee at Marine Affairs and Fisheries at Bengkulu Province), and 8th semester Marine Science Students at Bengkulu University. The result of this study showed that the Marine Science students needs the four of English skills and English materials but  the most needed are writing and reading. Therefore, the researcher designed an Integrated Syllabus that is suitable with Marine Science Study Program especially at Bengkulu University. From the research, it can be seen that the English needs of marine science students at Bengkulu University. Then, the syllabus developed in this study can be used as a reference in preparing English courses in the Marine Science study program.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the needs of English material for Islamic economics students. The method employed in this research is descriptive. Forty students and ten stakeholders were asked to complete the questionnaire, and ten stakeholders were interviewed. The result of the research: 1) the highest themes or topics needed based on students' perception is the relevance of Islamic economics, meanwhile based stakeholders' perception is the methodology of Islamic economics; 2) the highest discourse texts needed based on students' perception is Islam as a way of life, whereas based on stakeholders' perception is facts and theories of Islamic economics; and 3) the highest English Skills needed to be based on students and stakeholders' perception is speaking skill. In sum, the researchers concluded that speaking is an important skill needed by the Islamic economics study program of the Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to investigate the correlation between students’ interest in speaking materials and debate speaking competence then investigate the correlation between students’ interest in speaking materials and speaking learning achievement and investigate the correlation between debate speaking competence and speaking learning achievement simultaneously. This research is mix method, quantitative approach by using the correlational study as its method and qualitative. The samples of this research are 21 students. The data were gathered by using a questionnaire, interview, speaking test, and documentation value and were analysed by application SPSS. The findings showed the correlation between students’ interest in speaking materials and debate speaking competence at English student Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu was 0.587. Furthermore, the correlation between students’ interest in speaking materials and speaking learning achievement was 0,460. In conclusion, interest in speaking materials gives a positive influence between debate speaking competence and achievement. Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out 1).  the most common types of code-mixing used by male and female broadcasters at Swaraunib radio station 2).to find out the reasons for using Indonesian - English code-mixing by male and female broadcasters at Swaraunib Radio station. The subjects of this study were 6 broadcasters at Swaraunib radio station, with 3 male and 3 female broadcasters. The design of this research was descriptive, used quantitative as well as qualitative data. The result showed that there were three types of code-mixing proposed by Hoffman.  The results for male broadcasters showed that there were 282 (87%) cases of intra-sentential code mixing, 31 (9,6%) cases of intra-lexical code mixing, and 11 (3,4%) involvement in a change of pronunciation. Meanwhile, the results for female broadcasters showed that there were 357 (89,9%) cases of intra-sentential code mixing, 28 (7,1%) cases of intra-lexical code mixing, and 12 (3%) involvement in a change of pronunciation. While for reasons of using code-mixing, female broadcasters and male broadcasters both used seven reasons from Hoffman's theory. The reasons were talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, and expressing group identity and solidarity In addition, female broadcasters using code-mixing tended to be more conscious and intentional than male broadcasters, and female broadcasters were more expressive than male broadcasters in the use of code-mixing. In conclusion, although the most common types and reasons for using code mixing between male and female broadcasters were similar, there were still differences that were influenced by gender factors. However, code mixing can be used to create a good and interesting communication, especially in broadcasting media.

Abstract

The discussion section is one part of the thesis that describes the findings of research by demonstrating deep knowledge of the findings, interpreting the findings, and emphasizing the contribution to the current knowledge. Additionally, discussion section is also the most challenging part of the thesis. This study aimed to find out the most grammatical problems and the causes of grammatical problems in discussion section of thesis written by English Education postgraduate Program students at University of Bengkulu. This study used a mixed method in analyzing the data. Most of the grammatical problems were investigated quantitatively, while the causes of grammatical problems were studied qualitatively. The corpuses of this study were 30 master theses written by postgraduate English students who have graduated in 2021. The findings showed that the most frequent grammatical problems found in the discussion section of the thesis were incorrect verbs with 65,4% or 121 times of errors, which were dominated by tense confusion and subject-verb agreement. The cause of the grammatical problems found in the discussion section of the thesis was first-language interference. The conclusion of this study provides information about the most frequent grammatical problems and possible causes in the thesis discussion section to increase the writer's awareness about the importance of grammatical writing in the discussion section.
