Abstract

Black Elk Speaks is a book describing the spirituality and social life of Native Americans. It contains values of living in balance with nature and the respect towards the Great Spirit. Black Elk himself is a prominent figure believed by Native Americans or the Indian as having vision of the future. The book is the words of Black Elk as told through John G. Neihardt (Flamming Rainbow). By reading the book, we learn how Native Americans survive in the land that does not belong to their tribes. The pain and sorrow of watching relatives and family vanished in the war. Yet, the identity of Native Americans remains among the uproar of social changes in the history of America. The purification of mind and soul in viewing modern life is in line with the American individualism. Furthermore, the study of Native American literature will enrich the spiritual journey of individuals in interpreting life in a multicultural society. Here, I would like to explore the paradox of living in the Indian reservation and the facts faced by Native Americans as told in Black Elk Speaks. Keywords: Black Elk, vision, spirituality, paradox, Native Americans

Abstract

This study is aimed to observe the factors of defense mechanisms applied by the main character, Charlie Quinn in The Good Daughter’s novel by Karin Slaughter. The Good Daughter tells the story of Charlie Quinn who undergoes certain unfortunate situations in Pikeville, Georgia, United States. Library research is conducted to gather the data. The primary data were collected from the novel whilst the secondary data were collected from journals, books, and articles. Character and characterization, conflicts, and settings are observed for the intrinsic aspects whilst the psychology of literature approach that includes the factors of Sigmund Freud’s defense mechanisms is observed for the extrinsic aspects. It is determined that from the analysis, defense mechanisms are applied to redeem objective and neurotic anxiety. Objective and neurotic anxiety are the factors that trigger the use of defense mechanisms. Finally, the kinds of defense mechanisms employed by the main character to redeem anxiety are intellectualization, repression, denial, regression, and displacement. Keywords: The Good Daughter; defense mechanisms; objective anxiety; neurotic anxiety

Abstract

Bikers are often considered as brutal, unlawful and unoccupied group of people disrupting the order of society. In some cases, they belong to certain gangs committing serious crime. Yet, there are also bikers riding their motorcycles in order to experience ultimate freedom; the freedom of chasing the wind and living outdoor close to nature. The idea of American Dream puts a solid basis on the two phenomena previously mentioned. The short article reveals the stereotype of American bikers by analyzing the lyrics of Ride the Wind and Ride to live, Live to Ride. The argumentative analysis is developed and elaborated through several elements of the lyrics, sociological point of view and historical perspectives. Hence, a comprehensive discussion can be developed and acquired.                                            Keywords: Stereotype, Bikers, American Dream, Gangs, Freedom

Abstract

The study aims to describe which aspects represent mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity using Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial studies. This research applies a qualitative analysis method. The primary source of the research data is the novel entitled Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor as the object of the study. In contrast, the secondary sources are books and journals related to the study that serves as the primary reference regarding the theory of Bernstein’s heroism and Bhabha’s postcolonialism. To collect the data, the writer uses the close-reading method. This study indicates that the journey of the main character of Strange the Dreamer, Lazlo Strange, is intertwined with postcolonialism issues that develop his act of mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity. Keywords: postcolonialism; mimicry; ambivalence; hybridity; Lazlo Strange

Abstract

This thesis is written to analyze the main character, Sutter Keely, in The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp, who struggles his adolescence without proper parental guidance. He is also dealing with failed romantic relationships that influence in how he grows as an adolescent. In this novel, he uses several defense mechanisms on daily basis to deal with issues and difficulties in his life. This thesis aims to identify the triggers, the kinds, and the effects of his defense mechanisms. This thesis uses Freudian psychoanalysis theory and its branch, defense mechanism, as the main theories. Library research and exponential approach are used to help the writer to get the desirable results. The result of this thesis reveals that the main triggers of his defense mechanisms are his family and his failed romantic relationships. The defense mechanisms he uses are rationalization, displacement, suppression, denial, altruism, and distortion. The effects of his defense mechanisms bring more negative results to his life. Keywords: adolescence; defense mechanisms; Freudian Psychoanalysis.

Abstract

America is a pluralistic country that often faces issues of racism and discrimination. This issue is often faced by African-Americans as one of the ethnic minorities. In this undergraduate thesis, I would like to analyze the Black Power Movement as depicted in the Blackkklansman movie using the sociology of literature approach by Abrams. Moreover, I also use an exponential approach to analyze the intrinsic elements in the movie. The result of the analysis shows that the Black Power movement occurs due to the white supremacy acts from the Ku Klux Klan members towards Blacks. As the result, the black community fought back by moving the masses of black people to carry out a revolutionary movement. Keywords: Blackkklansman; black  power; discrimination; Ku Klux Klan; revolutionary movement

Abstract

Korea is famous for the creative industry such as drama which set in modern times and the kingdom era (saeguk). In the saeguk drama, Korean Indigenous knowledge is also shown. It represents their traditional life, such as livelihoods, how to make tools, survive in four seasons, how to farm or garden, and also about health. One of the saeguk with the theme of Indigenous knowledge is Jewell in the Palace, with the background of the lives of physicians and healers in the Joseon era. This study aims to identify the health themes in the drama text. Therefore, we use qualitative content analysis. The results of the study show that in Jewell in the Palace, there are twelve main themes about health: the relationship between body changes and health, herbs, flowers, acupuncture, healthy drinks, environmental influence on health, benefits of plants for health, spices, fruits, benefits of animals for human health, healthy tips, and natural ingredients for skincare. The conclusion is that the Korean drama Jewell in the Palace has main themes and sub-themes about health based on their characteristics, types of plants, names of animals, and the benefits. The results of this study can be a source of reference for further research from several disciplines: cultural science (cultural and media studies), health (traditional medicine), education (the effectiveness of drama as a source of learning about Indigenous knowledge), and research studies to analyze the use of entertainment media (films, movies, comedy series, and dramas) as sources of research data.
