This study aims to find out the artists who came from the Batak Land during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia, the independence period, and the post-independence period, as well as the specialty of the artists in motivating the workers in the millennial era or the present. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a historical approach through heuristic steps (collection of data relevant to the topic of study, both primary and secondary), for verification (criticism of external and internal sources), for further interpretation. The analysis was carried out using the theory of semiotics (Ferdinand De Saussure), namely content analysis. The results show that North Sumatra, especially the Tapanuli region, is the hometown for many artists, especially musicians with various genres known at the national and international level. The strength of the lyrics and musicality from the traditional to the popular modern has strengthened the variety of themes and musical compositions so that they become part of the atmosphere that supports the emergence of "Batak the Singing Man". with musical colors, ranging from classical, pop, jazz, blues, country, cha-cha, tango, calypso, rumba, waltz, march, baleno, slow rock, bossanova, keroncong, hawaian beat, stambulan, soul, and faxtrot, respectively each with its derivatives.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to present the findings from the Bongal Site as an essential learning resource for the History subject in Senior High Schools, particularly in exploring the dynamics of cultural interaction and the spread of religion in the Indonesian archipelago during ancient times. Methodology: This research employs a qualitative methodology, integrating historical and archaeological approaches. The historical approach is used to reconstruct the process of Christianity’s arrival on the west coast of Sumatra. At the same time, archaeological data are supported by an extensive literature review and field observations. Main Findings: The findings reveal that the spread of early Christianity to Sumatra, though still debated among historians, is evidenced by written sources indicating the presence of the Nestorian Church in the Fansur (Barus) region. Archaeological excavations at the Bongal Site uncovered various artifacts such as rings engraved with crosses, Roman beads, carved stones with Christian symbols, and Byzantine liturgical spoons that support this narrative. Novelty/Originality of this study: The originality of this study lies in the identification and comparative analysis of artifacts that bear significant resemblance to early Roman and Byzantine Christian objects. These findings not only offer new insights into the early presence of Christianity on Sumatra’s west coast but also support the use of the Bongal Site as a contextual and meaningful historical learning resource in secondary education.

Abstract

This study examines gender-based oppression and exploitation experienced by female contract laborers in the Deli tobacco plantations between 1870 and 1930. It explores how the colonial plantation system shaped women’s position and exposed them to social, economic, and sexual inequality. This research draws on a qualitative literature review of books, scholarly articles, historical reports, and other relevant historical sources. The findings show that female laborers occupied a subordinate position within the plantation workforce. They were assigned low-paid work, subjected to strict supervision, and received minimal labor protection. The gender imbalance within plantation communities also contributed to the expansion of prostitution, exposing women to sexual exploitation and serious social and health consequences. These findings demonstrate that the colonial plantation system exploited women not only economically but also through unequal gender relations and power structures embedded in the contract labor system. By centering women’s experiences, this study contributes to the historiography of women, labor, and colonialism in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Medan Post Office, currently known as Pos Bloc Medan, is one of the most prominent Dutch colonial heritage buildings in North Sumatra, possessing significant historical, architectural, and cultural value. Built in 1909 and inaugurated in 1911, the building originally served as a center for postal and communication services during the colonial period. This study aims to examine the historical development of the Medan Post Office, analyze its colonial architectural characteristics, and explore its functional transformation into Pos Bloc Medan as a strategy for cultural heritage preservation in Medan. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through literature review, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that the Medan Post Office exhibits a hybrid colonial architectural style that combines European design elements with adaptations to tropical environmental conditions. The study further reveals that transforming the building into Pos Bloc Medan has preserved its historical and architectural authenticity while introducing new functions as a creative public space, community center, and platform for local economic activities. This transformation represents a successful implementation of adaptive reuse, demonstrating that heritage conservation can remain relevant to contemporary urban needs without compromising historical values.

Abstract

This study examines the adaptation process of Papuan students studying at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and Universitas Negeri Medan (Unimed) during 2012–2021. Differences in culture, language, social interaction, and learning systems often create adaptation challenges for students migrating from eastern Indonesia to Sumatera Utara. This research aims to describe the forms of adaptation undertaken by Papuan students and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors during their adjustment process. The study employed a qualitative descriptive-historical approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that Papuan students adapt academically, socially, culturally, and emotionally by building peer relationships, engaging in student organizations, maintaining cultural traditions, and receiving support from families and campus environments. Despite various challenges, Papuan students successfully developed dual identities by preserving their cultural roots while adopting local norms to support academic success.

Abstract

This study investigates the multicultural character of Medan in the late 19th century, with a focus on the intricate ethnic and cultural dynamics that influenced the city’s evolution during the colonial era. As a rapidly growing urban hub in East Sumatra, Medan attracted a diverse array of migrant communities—including Malays, Bataks, Chinese, Indians, and Europeans—each of which played a role in shaping the city’s socio-cultural landscape. This research addresses the question of how these ethnic groups interacted, negotiated spatial boundaries, and coexisted within the colonial urban order. Using a qualitative historical approach, the study draws upon archival materials, colonial administrative records, and travel writings to reconstruct interethnic relations and patterns of cultural exchange. The findings suggest that Medan’s multiculturalism was not simply a consequence of demographic plurality, but was deeply embedded in colonial economic imperatives, labor migration systems, and spatial planning strategies that regulated intergroup contact. Ethnic enclaves emerged as both sites of cultural preservation and zones of contestation, giving rise to hybrid identities and practices. The study concludes that 19th-century Medan offers a formative example of colonial urban multiculturalism—shaped by global migration and colonial governance—and provides valuable historical insight into the roots of ethnic pluralism in contemporary Indonesia.
