Abstract

A study on gel formulation of cinnamomum oil as mosquito repellent has been done against Aedes aegypti. This study was aimed to determinethe most effective formula as mosquito repellent from two different concentrations of oil in gel formulation. Two different concentrations12 and 15% of cinnanmomum oil were formulated in to gel form with addition 1% of clove oil as its fixative. The formulation of bothconcentrations of cinnamomum oil resulted good gel formula based on its organoleptic, pH, homogeneity and physically stable. However, both formulas could cause skin irritation. Gel formula with 15% concentration of oil showed the most effective effect against Aedes aegyptiwith six hours of tested period.

Abstract

Glutinous rice contains 99.7% of amilopectin. The amilopectin does not swell in cold water and it could retard the desintegration anddissolution of drug. Physical modification of glutinous rice by pregelatization can enhance the swelling power of starch in cold water. In thisstudy, glutinous rice used as sample was collected from three difference places which are kecamatan Air Tiris, Rumbio Jaya dan Salo kabupatenKampar, Riau province. Sample was subjected to pregelatization process manually as well as by using Spray Dryer. The result showed thatpregelatized glutinous rice starch gave the higher swelling power than glutinous rice. Glutinous rice from Rumbio Jaya showed the highestswelling power of 343.87%. This value indicated that it could be potential candidate as sustained release agent.

Abstract

A study on the use of pregelatinized glutinous rice starch in combination with sodium carboxy methyl cellulose as sustained release matrix and sodium diclofenac as a model has been conducted. Two formulas were prepared with these ratio of pregelatized glutinous rice starch to Na CMC of (42,70% : 14,25 %) (F1) and (28,5% : 28,5 %) (F2) respectively. Evaluation of pharmaceutical properties of the tablets showed that all formulas fulfilled the requirement in term of weight uniformity, content uniformity, friability, hardness and disintegration time. Dissolution profile showed that F1 showed down the release of drug at 86% in 12 hours, while F2 80,16 % in 12 hours.

Abstract

Starch is among the important pharmaceutical excipient, which is particularly used as filler in the tablet formulation and suspending agent. Starch from natural source has a potential to be developed as pharmaceutical excipient with comparable characteristics, including starch from Musa balbisiana (M. balbisiana). This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate physicochemical properties of phosphate pregelatinized M. balbisiana starch. We isolated the starch from M. balbisiana and performed pregelatinization. Since pregelatinized starch still could experience retrogradation which cause syneresis, chemical modification of pre-gelatinized starch was conducted using 5% of sodium tripolyphosphate at pH of 9-10. Physicochemical properties of phosphate pregelatinized starch were then investigated. It included the assessment of its organoleptic, pH, water content, particle size distribution, angle of repose, swelling power, amylose content, adsorbs isotherm, and particle analysis using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Phosphate-pregelatinized M. balbisiana starch had low swelling power, better flow properties and viscosity. It can be used particularly in the formulation of slow released tablets and suspending agents in suspension formula. Keywords: pregelatinized starch, Musa balbisiana, psychochemical properties, excipients
