Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and to know the reasons why the teachers used the method. Descriptive qualitative method was applied. The subjects were two English teachers at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Palangka Raya. It was used observation and questionnaires to collect the data. The data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing were applied for data analysis. The findings show nine major patterns of GTM applied: (1) The classes were taught mainly in mother tongue; (2) the vocabulary was taught in the form of lists of isolated words; (3) the grammar provided the rules for putting words together; (4) it focused on the form and inflection of words; (5) the reading difficult classical texts were begun early; (6) it was little attention to the content of the texts; (7) the drills were exercises in translating; (8) it was little attention to pronunciation; and (9) it focused on accuracy. Meanwhile, the reasons of the teachers used the method are: (1) It is suitable for the students; (2) it helps the students comprehend the text; (3) it  improves the vacabulary; and (4) by using this method teaching-learning activities work well.

Abstract

Tantangan guru agar profesional dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran melalui Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) mendorong Tim Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM)  STMIK Palangka Raya untuk berperan aktif memberikan bimbingan PTK kepada guru-guru SMK Negeri-1 Palangka Raya. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme guru-guru SMK Negeri-1 Palangka Raya melalui peningkatan pemahaman mengenai PTK dan peningkatan kemampuan dalam penyusunan proposal serta laporan PTK yang berkualitas. Selain itu, guru-guru juga diharapkan mampu menghasilkan instrumen soal yang baik sebagai instrumen yang akan digunakan dalam PTK yaitu instrumen soal yang bersifat valid dan reliabel. Metode yang digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan kegiatan ini adalah ceramah dan praktikum sedangkan teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah wawancara, observasi dan kuesioner. Hasil kegiatan ini adalah peserta memahami cara penyusunan proposal dan laporan PTK dan mampu melakukan pengujian validitas dan reliabilitas instrumen soal dengan menggunakan Microsoft Excel dan SPSS. Kegiatan ini mendapatkan respon yang baik dari peserta dibuktikan dengan rata-rata persentase hasil kuesioner yang diperoleh yaitu sebesar 79,72%

Abstract

The implementation of online-based applications is deemed necessary to assist teachers as one of the supporting applications in e-learning. Based on the results of interview, observation, and implementation of community service activity carried out by Lecturers of STMIK Palangka Raya was very enthusiastically welcomed by the teachers at Miftahul Jannah Schools Palangka Raya. The application applied in the activity was Zoom. The implementation of this application is one of the teachers’ efforts in their professionalism to improve the quality of learning. The assistance in using the Zoom application in this service activity aims to increase teachers understanding in using it as a means of teaching and learning. The methods used in community service activity were practice, lectures, and demonstrations. These methods used to reduce the obstacles which have been problem for teachers in using application for teaching online. As the result, from the carried out activity, the participants, teachers, can apply the Zoom application starting from downloading, installing, and accessing it.

Abstract

At the College of Informatics and Computer Management (STMIK) Palangka Raya, English course appear in the curriculum of each study programs. This course is divided into English I and English II, for both undergraduate and diploma levels. One of the goals of learning English here is so that students have the ability to speak English both verbally and in writing. The mastery level of English skill will be very beneficial for the students to comprehend their major subject; technology informatics and computers. As in the perspective of academic achievement for English courses, the students can be categorized at good level. As for the final assessment of a student, it is assessed by the level of attendance for each lecture, individual and group assignments, and test scores taken form midterm test and final test. One of the problem faced both teachers and students in teaching learning English that the lecturers have not been able to provide learning and assessment comprehensively for listening skill mastery. As the impact the students get less opportunity to practice listening skill. It is caused that the college does not yet have adequate supporting facilities such as language laboratory.

Abstract

Reading comprehension merupakan salah satu dari empat skill berbahasa yang harus dimiliki oleh setiap orang. Ada banyak cara yang bisa dilakukan seseorang untuk meningkatkan kemampuan reading comprehension-nya. Cara yang paling umum adalah dengan membaca suatu teks atau artikel kemudian menjawab pertanyaan terkait teks atau artikel tersebut. Media yang digunakan untuk melakukan hal ini awalnya bersifat konvensional, yakni buku, koran atau majalah cetak. Seiring dengan kemajuan teknologi, maka media yang digunakan pun mengalami evolusi. Salah satu media yang cukup popular adalah mengunakan buku digital atau artikel yang dapat diakses melalui internet. Berangkat dari keadaan tersebut maka tercetuslah ide untuk membuat suatu rancangan aplikasi reading comprehension berbasis web ini. Rancangan ini dibuat dengan menggunakan UML (Unified Modelling Language) dan OOAD (Object Oriented Analysis and Design). Untuk perancangan desain antarmukanya/UI nya sendiri menggunakan Balsamiq Mockups 3. Hasil dari rancangan ini sendiri digunakan sebagai dasar untuk membangun suatu aplikasi online reading application kedepannya.

Abstract

Mahasiswa pada mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing seharusnya memiliki keterampilan membaca yang cukup baik agar dapat memahami materi. Salah satu keterampilan ini adalah decoding. Ketika mahasiswa membaca dan menjawab pertanyaan, mahasiswa tersebut memecahkan kode kata-kata untuk mendapatkan artinya. Penggunaan teknik yang tepat dalam pembelajaran, terutama kosakata, mampu meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa. Teknik yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini adalah context clues yang diterapkan mahasiswa dalam memahami teks. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengukur pengaruh context clues dalam pemahaman bacaan mahasiswa semester dua STMIK Palangkaraya. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kuantitatif dengan menggunakan desain quasi-experimental atau eksperimen semu. Peneliti merancang rencana pembelajaran, melakukan tindakan, dan mengamati nilai mahasiswa melalui pre-test dan post-test. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester dua STMIK Palangkaraya yang terdiri dari enam kelas yaitu tiga kelas Teknik Informatika, dua kelas Sistem Informasi, dan satu kelas Manajemen Informatika. Adapun sampel dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Teknik Informatika yaitu TI A dan TI B. Data dianalisis menggunakan rumus t-test untuk menguji hipotesis berdasarkan hasil analisis. Hasil pengujian hipotesis menetapkan Hipotesis Alternatif (Ha) yang menyatakan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari context clues terhadap pemahaman bacaan mahasiswa semester dua di STMIK Palangkaraya diterima dan Hipotesis Null (H0) yang menyatakan bahwa tidak ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari context clues dalam pemahaman bacaan mahasiswa semester dua STMIK Palangkaraya ditolak. Disimpulkan ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari context clues dalam pemahaman bacaan mahasiswa semester dua di STMIK Palangkaraya.

Abstract

As technology develops, the use of vending machines also develops. In addition to purchasing food and drinks, it can also be used to exchange medicine packaging for coins. To simplify the exchange process to make it more practical and not to spend a lot of time, a reverse vending machine was built for drug packaging containing metal as input. Collecting data using the method of observation and literature study. This type of research is prototyping because the results obtained are in the form of a prototype. This prototype used 3 buttons in main  process. The first stage is pressing button 1 to detect metal, then pressing button 2 to weigh, and button 3 to release coins. The test results obtained from the Arduino-Based Reverse Vending Machine Metal Medicine Packaging Exchange indicate that the prototype is able to be used as a medium of exchange for drug packaging trash containing metal into a medium of exchange in  money form. The prototype is able to provide a solution for reducing or managing medical trash which contains metal.
