Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the handling of the health of pilgrims since the Ordonantie van 1922, which regulates the organization of the ḥajj in the Dutch East Indies. As is known, during this period, there were several epidemics, such as smallpox, cholera, and the Spanish flu. Governments from around the world agreed to prevent the spread of the outbreak by cooperating in the health sector. This study uses historical research methods, which are based on four activities, starting from finding sources, criticizing sources or verifying data, interpreting and writing history. The approach used is the concept of social history to see how the Dutch East Indies government fortified its people from the threat of plague during the pilgrimage (ḥajj) season. Among the findings of this study is that the Dutch East Indies Government paid special attention to the health management of pilgrims from the East Indies. They conducted regular health checks starting from the port of Tanjung Priok to several places before entering Jeddah. These checks were carried out to prevent the spread of viruses such as cholera, smallpox, and Spanish Flu Abstrak: Artikel ini membahas tentang penanganan kesehatan jemaah haji sejak Ordonantie van 1922, yang mengatur tentang penyelenggaraan ibadah haji di Hindia Belanda. Abstract

This article discusses the role of Tun Sri Lanang in designing the socio-political and religious life and in introducing both the structural and cultural changes in the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom. This article focuses on the period of Sultan Iskandar Muda until Ratu Safiatuddin. In addition to his popularity as adviser of Sultan Iskandar Muda, Tun Sri Lanang was also well-known as a pioneer in spreading Islam in east Aceh especially in Samalanga. Although he had no strong knowledge on Islam, Tun Sri Lanang had a strong interest in the existence of Islam in Aceh. The fact that Aceh in his time was noted as a centre of Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia could not be separated from the role of hulubalang and other kingdom officials who had strong interests in disseminating Islam and developing knowledge.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v19i1.371

Abstract

This paper attempts to prove the hard work James Brooke put into enhancing his influence in Sarawak around the nineteenth century. This period signified British exploration conducted on the Malay Peninsula and its vicinity. Brooke clutched the opportunity to attempt his luck in Sarawak. His efforts were difficult, considering that he had to compete with the Sultanate of Brunei and the Head of the Dayak tribe to reach the highest helm. The historical sources got are based on several books published during the Brooke dynasty era in Sarawak. Of course, other secondary sources are also used to contribute to the historical analysis. Historical research methods were used to process this working paper so that it becomes a text worthy of discussion of similar themes. Memories of colonialism in Sarawak are essential to discuss in this era, bearing in mind that there were several positive values that can be treasured, which are then transformed into ideas for Sarawak's development as a sovereign territory. The memory of history will fill an essential space that reduces nationalism and awareness without sacrificing the interests of the public.

Abstract

This study aims to describe a historical perspective on religious moderation in the South Sulawesi region, focusing on the harmonious relationship between the Toraja, Bugis and other tribes. Although the majority of Tana Toraja's population is Christian, good relations with people of other religions, including Islam, have been established and maintained for centuries. Through a historical approach, this research will seek the historical roots of tolerance and peaceful relations between religious groups in the region. The history of the South Sulawesi region shows a tradition of religious moderation that has been passed down from generation to generation. The religious and cultural diversity of the region has shaped a unique and complementary social identity, despite the dark historical memories that exist between them. The research method used in this study is oral source-based historical analysis with Toraja traditional leaders. The data collected will be analysed to reveal the pattern of relationship between the tribes in the context of religion. The results of this study will illustrate that religious tolerance in South Sulawesi has been rooted since the past and did not appear out of nowhere. The tradition and culture of religious moderation have played a role in creating a social environment that respects differences and facilitates interfaith dialogue.
