Abstract

This article discusses the handling of the health of pilgrims since the Ordonantie van 1922, which regulates the organization of the ḥajj in the Dutch East Indies. As is known, during this period, there were several epidemics, such as smallpox, cholera, and the Spanish flu. Governments from around the world agreed to prevent the spread of the outbreak by cooperating in the health sector. This study uses historical research methods, which are based on four activities, starting from finding sources, criticizing sources or verifying data, interpreting and writing history. The approach used is the concept of social history to see how the Dutch East Indies government fortified its people from the threat of plague during the pilgrimage (ḥajj) season. Among the findings of this study is that the Dutch East Indies Government paid special attention to the health management of pilgrims from the East Indies. They conducted regular health checks starting from the port of Tanjung Priok to several places before entering Jeddah. These checks were carried out to prevent the spread of viruses such as cholera, smallpox, and Spanish Flu Abstrak: Artikel ini membahas tentang penanganan kesehatan jemaah haji sejak Ordonantie van 1922, yang mengatur tentang penyelenggaraan ibadah haji di Hindia Belanda.

Abstract

This study explores the social and political life of the Sidoresmo Islamic boarding school (pesantren) from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The research focuses on the socio-economic dynamics of the surrounding community, the relationship between the pesantren and the local Muslim society, as well as the pesantren's involvement in anti-colonial resistance against the Dutch East Indies government. The study employs a historical approach, relying primarily on official colonial government reports and period newspapers as primary sources. These written records are complemented by oral accounts transmitted across generations, particularly from fathers or grandfathers to current local informants. The research reveals several important findings concerning the strategic role of the pesantren in shaping communal life and local resistance. One of the key discoveries is that communal life in Sidoresmo was not only religiously structured but also served as a social foundation for resistance movements. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the 19th-century pesantren education model, which exhibits distinctive characteristics, such as the kiai-santri relationship, traditional methods of Islamic book (kitab kuning) instruction, and the integration of religious education with cultural resilience. These aspects of pesantren education in the 19th century remain underexplored in modern Indonesian historiography. Thus, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the pesantren not merely as a religious institution, but as a dynamic socio-political and educational force in pre-independence Indonesian history. It aims to enrich the discourse on pesantren-based resistance and local Islamic education during colonial times.

Abstract

This article explains that the movement of the Samin community at the end of the 19th century in Java caused a stir in colonial society. Typical of village communities in general, they spent their days in agrarian activities. However, there was a problem, which caused them to migrate to several areas in East Java, including Madiun, and then they were known to have carried out a number of acts of resistance against the local colonial government. This research will use historical research methods, armed with reading a number of documents and archives left by the Dutch East Indies Government. The concept of social movement becomes the locus that is put forward to explore the various activities of the Orang Samin in their new areas. The purpose of writing this article is to show that the end of the 19th century became a period of crisis for Madiun, where various elements of popular resistance emerged to oppose the arrogance of the Dutch East Indies government.

Abstract

James Brooke was an important figure who made significant contributions to mining, agriculture and plantations in Sarawak. As Sarawak's first White Raja, he played a crucial role in developing these sectors and opening up new opportunities for economic growth in the region. This paper will expose James Brooke's efforts in advancing the economy in Sarawak based on primary and secondary sources found. The historical analysis that is emphasized is centered on explaining economic history covering the three areas mentioned earlier. The method of analysis used is the historical method by looking at the development of the three sectors within a certain period. Economic history itself is not a history that contradicts political history, but is an inseparable unity. In this region, political dominance is built on the development of local resources.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing and describing the discourse of the official website content of Pusat Pengembangan Bisnis (P2B) UIN Jakarta using Discourse Analysis. The objectives involve identifying communicative deficiencies and proposing strategies for improvement. The descriptive qualitative method involves textual and multimodal coding of website content. Results indicate that the content lacks multimodal features (e.g. visuals, icons), absence of feedback forms, and multilingual content. Recommendations include adopting conversational register, integrating visual resources, providing multilingual options, and incorporating interactive feedback features. These strategies are crucial as UIN Jakarta transitions toward Public Legal Entity (PTN-BH) status, where communicative digital discourse aligns with institutional transparency and competitiveness.
