Abstract

Gender inequality in Indonesia is still common, in this case, there are still some problems regarding gender equality in career development in companies, especially for female employees. The company most likely considers that women do not have the ability like men. One of the State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), namely PT. PLN (Persero) Central Java and D.I.Yogyakarta Main Distribution Units have implemented rules regarding gender equality that do not differentiate between male employees and female employees in occupying positions. This study aims to understand the essence of the experience of gender equality in the career development of female employees. This is qualitative research that uses a critical paradigm with a critical phenomenology approach. The theory used in this research is Critical Organizational Communication Theory and Standpoint Theory. The data collection method used in this study was to conduct in-depth interviews by informants of 5 female employees who had a tenure of fewer than 5 years, more than 5-20 years, and over 20 years. The results show that this company has been dominated by male employees, it can be seen from employees to company leaders. When recruiting employees at PT. PLN (Persero) Main Unit Distribution Central Java and Yogyakarta, the difference in the number of male employees is 400 people and there are 18 female employees in the field. Experience of female workers at PT. PLN (Persero) Central Java and D.I.Yogyakarta Distribution Parent Units in developing employee careers to become structural officers have been determined through an application that has been provided to see the criteria of prospective candidates and follow the fit and proper test that has been held by the HR field. The company provides opportunities for female employees to develop their careers at PT. PLN (Persero) Main Unit Distribution Central Java and Yogyakarta, but each individual has obstacles to developing his career with special considerations such as family and work area placement. Thus, positions that have occupied structural positions tend to be dominated by male employees who do not take much consideration. However, female employees can still be involved in decision-making at work meetings and when employees are active at PT. PLN (Persero) Main Unit Distribution Central Java and Yogyakarta are determined based on the education level of male and female employees, not based on the gender of the employee.

Abstract

Film productions in Indonesia still present characterizations that are attached to traditional gender constructions and objectify the female body. The director of “Selesai” stated that this movie is produced as a form of his perception regarding the patriarchal culture in Indonesia, presenting social facts, starting a new perspective, and not discrediting women. Based on the director's statement, this study aims to describe the objectification of women and find the dominant ideology in the text. The main theory used is standpoint theory, supported by male gaze theory, radical libertarian feminism, and the concept of objectification of NussbaumLangton. The method used is the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes (5 codes). The main finding of this research is that “Selesai” represents the objectification of women, where the objectification is carried out by men, fellow women, and women themselves. Referring to the concept of Nussbaum Langton, some forms of objectification found in the movie; Instrumentality, where women are used as tools to satisfy men's sex that is represented in the movie through mistresses, girlfriends, and even in imagination, used as money-making tools and seen as instruments that should give birth in marriage relations. Denial of autonomy and inertness, a restriction on women when they try to make decisions for themselves such as husbands who refuse to divorce, women who have no autonomy to determine whether to give birth and are admitted to mental hospitals. Ownership can be seen from the unequal ownership relations where men tend to be dominant in both dating and marriage relationships and “playing victim” practices to justify the commitment violations. Fungibility, women can be exchanged if she didn’t meet expectations. Violability, women as objects who can be treated harshly, to be hurt, their rights are fine to be robbed, cheated on, and bullied verbally and non-verbally. Denial of subjectivity, women's experiences, and feelings are ignored. Reduction of appearance, women's value is reduced based on their appearance and reduction of the body where there is a focus on women through how the camera works on certain body parts. The objectification in “Selesai” is accompanied by a lack of female resistance, this emphasizes the dominant ideology of patriarchy and contradicts the director's statement which says that this movie didn’t discredit women because the facts chosen in this movie aren’t constructed well with gender equality. Based on the results of this critical research, it’s inaccurate if the contents of the film are used as material for a reflection to change society.

This research aims to find the essence of @tarabasro instagram followers' experience about beauty standards using a critical phenomenology approach. Beauty standards are one of the social issues that are happening in today’s society and have impacted many women. In Indonesia, beauty standards have been constructed since the colonial era and the understanding of beauty in Indonesia still looked up to the western standards. The method used in this research is using a qualitative approach using Clark Moustakas theoretical underpinnings of phenomenology to assist a step-by-step process of conducting a phenomenological study with the object of women who follow Tara Basro between the age of 18 to 34 years old. The primary data used through an in-depth interview from four informants and relevant journals. After finding Tara Basro's Instagram page the informants have a new perspective in how they see beauty standards which inspires them to love herself and embrace their natural appearance without having to meet beauty standards in Indonesia and thus in Indonesia it need more representation from actresses or influencer who have big following to not pushing the agenda of beauty standards rather that to spread the awareness of the importance to love their body without limits.

Abstract

The development of media in Indonesia is so rapid as marked by the increasing number of online media. However, this is not followed by an increase in the quality of reporting. There are still violations committed by the media which have resulted in complaints to the Press Council because online media prioritizes speed and virality. In addition, news content also still features negative reporting which can have a negative impact on the psychology of society. This can lead to a decrease in public trust in the mass media. One way to minimize the negative impact on psychology and increase public trust in the media is to apply constructive journalism. One theory that is relevant to constructive journalism is the social responsibility theory of the press. Theoretical studies and constructive journalism are analyzed in this study which focuses on how to implement constructive journalism at JEO Kompas.com using the quantitative content analysis method. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of constructive journalism in JEO Kompas.com news. This study shows that most of the news is hard news (76.7%). Kompas.com JEO news is also dominated by socio-cultural topics as much as 39.5%. Furthermore, most of the news (53.5%) includes the event rubric type. Through descriptive reports and cross-tabulation results, the results of the study show that JEO Kompas.com news tends to implement some elements of constructive journalism with a percentage of 75.2%. News that implemented all elements was found to be less (10.8%) than news that did not implement any elements at all (13.9%). The most implemented elements are all Future Orientation elements (46.5%). Meanwhile, the elements that are mostly implemented are Co-Creation elements. There is not a single piece of news that implements all the elements of Empower People or Co-Creation. Apart from that, the implementation of constructive journalism is also determined by the news format, topic, and type of rubric. Therefore, it is hoped that journalists and the media can prioritize the implementation of constructive journalism in journalistic work so as to increase public trust and at the same time improve the quality of people's lives.
