Abstract

Sundanese people are familiar with the traditional saying: silih asah, silih asih, silih asuh. This wise saying stands as an ethical principle to guide their attitudes in everyday life. This ethical principle is associated with 3 significant roles and their respective functions in Sundanese community, namely the reverend monk, the king and the father. These roles and their respective functions shape the Sundanese concepts of social relationship in a community, namely equality and functional interconnectivity. The Indonesian Catholic Church, especially in the Diocese of Bandung, can take into account the philosophical implications of this Sundanese saying in carrying out its mission. Bearing the principle of silih asah, silih asih, silih asuh in mind, the Church should proclaim the Good News through intensive involvements and caring services in local communities. This principle, in turn, helps the Church develop its identity properly in a local context

Abstract

This study delves into the philosophical and epistemological interpretation of the Heart Sutra, emphasizing the conjunction between rational and mystical thought processes. The paper illustrates how the Sutra promotes an intertwined understanding of reality through textual analysis and comparative discussion involving Eastern and Western philosophical perspectives. The exploration reveals that the Heart Sutra serves as a profound guide, advocating for a balanced comprehension that integrates empirical rationality and mystical insight. The findings suggest that the notion of 'Shunyata' or emptiness encapsulates a complex relational understanding of being, where rational knowledge and mystical experiences are not only coexistent but mutually inclusive. This conjunctive approach challenges the conventional boundaries of epistemic thought and offers a comprehensive framework for understanding reality's multifaceted nature. This research contributes to the broader discourse on integrating traditional philosophical insights with contemporary epistemological frameworks, enriching both academic and practical understanding of spiritual texts.

Abstract

According to Antonio Negri, one may recognize the modern culture with hegemonizing power of the Empire or the superstate which is a mutual symbiosis of liberal democracy and modern capitalism. On the one hand the Empire attempts to subjugate and to regulate whatever social domains inasmuch as there is no longer insurgent agents which are capable to live outside the political and economical structure of this power. On the other hand, the more the Empire regulates social life the more the social domains per se are becoming fluid and modifiable. This flexibility or fluidity of social domains embodies within a kind of social body, which Negri names as the multitude. Agents of this kind of adaptable collectivity inherently exhibit natural capability of sharing. The capability to share of the multitude makes the Empire difficult to completely defeat and to conquer the social life. In other words, the multitude opposes the power to unify everything under the single political and economical flag of The Empire. Negri argues for this resistant capablity as the biopolitics of the multitude against the disciplinary force of the Empire. Nowadays, the capability of sharing is something familiar for nearly all local cultures in Indonesian Archipelago. Negri’s account of the power of sharing of the multitude reminds us in order to revitalize this capability of sharing within our cultural heritages.

Abstract

Cosmology is not limited to the questions of the origin and the end of all beings or to the law and order of the universe from the perspective of modern sciences. One can perceive cosmology as a knowledge model of the universe which sets in a non-Western model of knowing. The Sundanese cosmology is an example of this model. Instead of mathematical and physical explanation, it focuses on the mythological description of the universe. Such description can be found in narrative poems (pantun) and pious lessons. This paper observes the non-western knowledge model and puts it in its context, which is geographically equivalent to Southern and Eastern Asia. An overview of the Rig Veda and Daodejing is included to describe the cosmological models in these cultural contexts. The Sundanese cosmology reverberates these models. An elaboration of Sundanese narrative poems and an old Sundanese manuscript, Sewaka Darma, indicates the similarities of the Sundanese cosmology to the cultural contexts and the knowledge models referred to. The Sundanese model enacts ‘mountain’ and the metaphor of ‘filled nothingness’ as the cosmological model. The Sundanese cosmological model portrays a down-upward journey to experience ‘moksa’ (the ultimate enlightment). This journey utilizes meditative practices and everyday deeds by means of our social and cultural roles.

Abstract

One who learns and reads Western Philosophy is familiar with theDecartes' proposition 'cogito ergo sum'. This proposition becomesontological and epistemological reason of our existence.Nevertheless, one can also explore another reason of existence, notonly this Cartesian proposition considered the universal. A nuanceof affirmation implied within a local tradition of wisdom can be theother ontological and epistemological reason. Therefore, anexploration the nuance of affirmation in Asian tradition of wisdomis necessarily discovered this alternative reason of existence (1).One can discover such alternative reason from a local worldviewand philosophical narration in a local tradition of wisdom (2). Thisarticle observes the worldview and philosophical narration ofSundanese people. The observation offers a further interpretationto the Sundanese worldview and philosophical narration. Thepurpose of this interpretation is to formulate the nuance ofaffirmation as it is implied in the local system of knowledge. Aprinciple of affirmation is derived from the interpretation of thesystem of knowledge (3). The interpretation also becomes a furtherinvitation to explore and to find out an intercultural understandingand dialogues of various systems of knowledge (4).

Abstract

In the last decade, scientists in almost all disciplines often elaborate happiness using interdisciplinary approaches, metodologies, and measurements, both quantitative and qualitative. Beside scientific approaches, one can also explore this topic from the viewpoint of speculative and phenomenological thinking. This viewpoint describes the experiences of happiness by realising empirical and rational knowledge as well as esoteric consciousness of reality as such. It is Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi), whose thoughts elaborate cognitive and intuitive sides of human mind, who offers a philosophy in order to bring forward an awareness of reality as itself. Chuang Tzu argues for a realisation of conjunction of both cognitive and intuitive capabilities of human mind, as well as its rational and mystical sides. The realisation of both natural capabilities brings about conditions for modern people’s experience of happiness.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the limitations of ethical green consumption as a solution to the environmental crisis, highlighting how such practices operate within an economic system that in fact reinforces ecological degradation. Green consumption is seen as incapable of addressing the root causes of the crisis, as it remains trapped in the logic of endless growth, commodification, and the individualization of ecological responsibility. This research is crucial given the increasing popularity of ethical consumption narratives in policymaking and popular culture, despite their often illusory contributions to sustainability. The study employs a qualitative approach grounded in semiotics and interpretive analysis. Data are collected through a literature review of academic texts, policy documents, and media narratives that engage with the concepts of green consumption and degrowth. The analysis deconstructs signs, symbols, and metaphors within sustainability discourse and situates them within broader social and ideological contexts. The main finding reveals that ethical green consumption functions as an ideological mechanism that stabilizes the capitalist economic system through moral aesthetics, rather than as a transformative effort that addresses the ecological crisis at its root. The discourses of green growth and sustainable development promoted by global institutions are framed in technocratic language that conceals power relations, global inequality, and ecological imperialism. In contrast, degrowth emerges as an alternative paradigm that proposes a redefinition of prosperity based on sufficiency, redistribution, reciprocity, and global ecological justice—particularly through selective contraction in wealthy nations and development autonomy for the Global South. The study's implications point to the need for a shift in sustainability policy and culture—from an emphasis on individual responsibility toward systemic transformation and global justice. This research contributes original insights by integrating semiotic analysis and critical theory to uncover the growth ideology embedded in green consumption and by rearticulating degrowth not as austerity, but as a political, ecological, and social vision for a just and sustainable future.
