Abstract

Background: Several studies showed that fluoride interferes in the dynamics involved in the development of caries and could present an antimicrobial effect or provide demineralization inhibition or dental remineralization. The development of fluoride-releasing materials can contribute to a preventive of demineralization. GIC and Compomer are restorative materials containing fluoride which can prevent demineralization. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of Compomer and GIC against prevention in enamel demineralization. Method: The cavities were made on 18 bovine teeth which grouped into 3 groups, each group consisting of 6 bovine teeth. After the restorative procedures, the teeth were submitted to demineralization and remineralization cycling during 14 days. The sections of the teeth were examined under scanning electron microscope after undergoing pH cycling. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey Test (p<0.05). Results: GIC group showed the lowest lesion depth of demineralization (10.9883 ± 0.74333) followed by Compomer group (25.4183 ± 3.44268) and Control group (88.9783 ± 3.02495). Conclusion: GIC restorative materials have a better enamel demineralization prevention effect than Compomer. Keywords: compomer, demineralization, fluoride, GIC, remineralization

Abstract

Background: The interest and awareness for maintaining oral health is increasing.  It is not only confined to fillings and extractions, but also extend to orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment aims to get normal occlusion, improves the health of the periodontal, dental health and facial aesthetics. Increased interest in orthodontic treatment was due to the high prevalence of malocclusion. The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesian is still very high which is about 80% of the population. Orthodontic treatments change the circumstances surrounding the oral cavity, so that orthodontic appliance users who do not maintain oral hygiene are at risk for periodontal disease. Objective: to determine relationship between duration of the fixed orthodontic treatment with periodontal status and treatment needs among students in the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar in 2017. Materials and methods: This study is observational analytical study with cross sectional study design. The samples were 35 students in Faculty of Dentistry UMI Makassar using fixed orthodontic appliance. The method of data collection that checks the periodontal status and treatment needs was done by using an a Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need (CPITN). The statistical analysis was done by using Chi-Square test. Results: Based on the statistical test, it is shown that there were relationship between duration of fixed orthodontic treatment with periodontal status (p = 0,004 < 0,01) and the periodontal treatment need (p = 0,004 < 0,01). Conclusion: There is  relationship between duration of fixed orthodontic treatment with periodontal status and treatment needs of the students in the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Muslim Indonesia in 2017.

Abstract

Background: Fixed orthodontic treatment is now widely used in society, but people often do not realize the risks of using this appliance such as the rise of oral hygiene and caries problem. The design of this appliance is more difficult to clean than removable orthodontic appliance so it can cause a variety of oral disease if long-term fixed orthodontic treatment is required and the cleanliness of the teeth and mouth is not maintained. According to RISKESDAS 2013, Ministry of Health of Indonesia reported that the prevalence of oral disease reached 25.9%. The results showed an increase in the prevalence of oral disesase compared to RISKESDAS 2007 results. Objective : to investigate the relation between duration of fixed orthodontic treatment and oral hygiene status among the students of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Muslim Indonesia 2017. Method : The study was conducted as an analytic observational study with cross-sectional study design. Samples of this research were students of Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Muslim Indonesia, Makassar, Indonesia. Oral hygiene status were analyzed using Attin Index. The result was statiscally analyzed with Chi-Square test. Results : The p value of this research was less than 0.05, therefore the results of this research are statistically significant. Conclusion : Hypothesis was accepted and showed that there was a significant relation between the duration of fixed orthodontic treatment and oral hygiene status among the students of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Muslim Indonesia 2017.

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion is a dentofacial growth deviation that interferes with mastication, deglutination, speech and facial harmony. In Indonesia, the prevalence of malocclusion is constantly high (around 80%) which reached 90% among school-age adolescents in 1983 and 89% in 2006. Malocclusion condition, especially crowding, can generate plaque accumulation and calculus formation because of toothbrush inability to outreach interdental areas in crowded teeth. Aims: To determine the correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status among class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar in 2017. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study using cross-sectional design. Target population is class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar. The data was collected using ICON and OHI-S assessment method. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman test. Results: The results showed p value = 0.01 which means that there was a significant correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status with r = 0.314. Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status among class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar in 2017.
