Abstract

Adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood, where in adolescent girls it is marked by menstruation, breast enlargement, hips, and so on. As a result of these changes, adolescent girls are at risk of experiencing nutritional deficiencies in their bodies which can lead to anemia. Anemia is a condition where there is a lack of hemoglobin levels in the body, the impact of which will be seen now and in the future. Dysmenorrhea is also the most common disorder experienced by women, especially adolescents, during the menstrual cycle. Dysmenorrhea can have an impact on daily activities, but many adolescent girls still do not know the factors related to the occurrence of primary dysmenorrhea, so health education is needed. The purpose of this activity was to provide health education about the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia in adolescent girls and to conduct Hb level checks. This community service activity was carried out by providing education with slides and videos related to the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia in 100 female students at SMP N 31 Padang. Adolescents will complete a knowledge and attitude questionnaire regarding anemia and primary dysmenorrhea before and after the intervention. The results of this activity showed an increase in knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls regarding the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia. The results of Hb examinations in adolescent girls found that 6% of adolescent girls had anemia. It is hoped that this health education can be carried out periodically so that young women can have the right knowledge and a positive attitude in dealing with problems such as dysmenorrhea or anemia.

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy in adolescents has the potential risk of disrupting psychological well-being. Understanding how psychological well-being is conceptualized and assessed among adolescents, as well as identifying influential factors, is essential for developing appropriate and effective interventions.  This review aims to map the conceptual approaches and assessment methods used to evaluate psychological well-being among pregnant adolescents and to identify influential factors associated with psychological well-being during pregnancy. Methods: The study procedures were carried out using a scoping review that followed the Joanna Briggs Institute approach. Literature searches included terms from Emtree, MeSH, and CINAHL headings across 5 databases, including Embase, Medline (Ovid), CINAHL, Cochrane, and ScienceDirect until April 2024. After the search, a total of 8 studies were included, which met the needed criteria. Results: This review identified 5 conceptual approaches used to understand and assess psychological well-being in pregnant adolescents, namely (i) self-esteem, (ii) measures on anxiety, depression, emotional bonding, general positive affect, and the absence of psychological distress, (iii) discrimination experiences, self-perceptions, and social barriers experienced, (iv) positive and negative mood concepts, and (v) positive psychological functioning. The results showed that several factors were associated with psychological well-being of pregnant adolescents, including educational level, neighborhood support, financial constraints, rejection from close people, trust, and attachment with caregiver. Conclusion: This review shows the need for a more comprehensive and multidimensional approach to conceptualizing and assessing psychological well-being in pregnant adolescents. The complexity of this issue demands a thorough and inclusive approach that focuses on individual and social factors. Keywords: adolescent pregnancy; psychological well-being; adolescent growth and development

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of women who have faced domestic violence, focusing on the causes of the violence, its impact on their health, and the decision-making processes they undertook in response. Method: This study used a phenomenological study approach. The inclusion criteria were women from the Minangkabau tribe, aged 18-40, married or previously married, and with children. Participant recruitment was conducted through the Pusat Pelayanan Terpadu Pemberdayaan Perempuan dan Anak/ Integrated Service Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children) and the Women’s Crisis Center (WCC) “Nurani Perempuan”, based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data collection continued until thematic saturation was reached. Nine women were involved. In-depth interviews and field notes were transcribed verbatim, and theme analysis was performed using the seven-step Collaizzi technique. Results: Four themes emerged from the data: (1) failure to resolve family conflict; (2) physical and psychological despair; (3) inability to make decisions; (4) need for external support. Participants’ experiences reflect the erosion of traditional protective systems due to cultural shifts, economic dependence, and societal pressures. Conclusions: The study highlights that unresolved family conflict, poor health outcomes, and limited decision-making power shape women's vulnerability to domestic violence. Strengthening community-based support and culturally sensitive interventions is recommended to empower women and reduce the risk of domestic violence.
