Abstract

This study aims to describe the conversation, debate and new interpretations of progressive thinking of Husein Muhammad for the sake of reforming the rules of Islamic law with gender equality perspective. This research uses a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach. The results showed that Husein Muhammad is a male Muslim feminist. In contrast to most other Islamic feminists who deconstruct religious texts and look for possible reconstructions in the values of secular humanism, Husein's ideas have their own distinctiveness, because in addition he has a depth of classical Islamic literature in analyzing or competing arguments against gender inequality in society, he also carried out reconstruction by finding references contained in the classical Islamic treasures which he considered more in line with the spirit of Koran’s justice. This is what makes Husein's ideas in defending women considered by some as the only capable and important in Indonesia to be maintained. Some of the methodologies used are the Contextual Interpretation methodology, Maqashid al-Shari'ah, Asbab al Nuzul, Special Text and General Text, Understanding Causality and Social Reality, and Ta'wil. Some of these methodologies are important because they are able to provide understanding to Islamic attackers without having to be apologetic, as many contemporary scholars show.

Abstract

The rapid global social transformation has posed serious challenges to character education at the elementary school level. Young children today are growing up in a complex value landscape shaped by technological disruption, social solidarity crises, and widespread cultural shifts. This study aims to examine how the global social crisis is reflected in the dynamics of character education for elementary students and to explore humanistic and contextual approaches as responsive strategies. This qualitative research employed data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis in two elementary schools in Brebes Regency, Indonesia. The findings reveal that children face value tensions stemming from social media and globalized environments, affecting their empathy, behavior, and moral identity. Teachers and schools tend to implement character education in a normative and fragmented manner, often disconnected from students' real-life contexts. The study highlights that a humanistic approach centering learners as subjects—and a contextual approach connecting values with lived experiences are more effective in fostering authentic character development. This research contributes a new perspective to the study of character education in the age of global disruption by proposing an integrated pedagogical strategy grounded in humanization and social relevance. The implications call for a reformulation of policies and practices in elementary character education to ensure greater adaptability to the social crises that increasingly impact children from an early age.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing challenges of diversity in the global era, such as intolerance, radicalism, and humanitarian crises, which reveal a gap between the universal values of Islam, namely Karāmah al-Insān and Rahmatan lil‘Ālamīn, and the social practices of some communities, including in the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE). To address these issues, this study uses a qualitative approach based on literature review through conceptual analysis, literature synthesis, and content analysis of recent scientific references discussing human values, religious moderation, and the reconstruction of IRE pedagogy. The results of the study show that transformative PAI can only be realized through a paradigm shift from a normative-doctrinal approach to a humanistic-transformative model that is dialogical, contextual, digitally literate, and action-based, with teachers as uswah ḥasanah and agents of change. This study confirms that the integration of the values of Karāmah al-Insān and Rahmatan lil 'Ālamīn into case-based curriculum and learning methodologies, reflective dialogue, digital literacy, and service learning can strengthen the humanistic orientation of PAI and serve as an effective strategy in countering narratives of extremism and fostering social piety oriented towards Maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah..
