Abstract

English Training for Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Children in Malaysia through “Fun Easy English” The right to education for all Indonesian citizens has not reached all the children of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in Malaysia. In addition to the Kuala Lumpur Indonesian School (SKIL), several learning centers called Sanggar Bimbingan (SB) have been established in Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings. Kampung Bharu learning center is one of the learning centers under the auspices of the Muhammadiyah Special Branch Manager (PCIM) of Malaysia. In the 2021/2022 academic year, 51 elementary school-aged students (grades 1 to 6) were enrolled at SB Kampung Bharu. According to the results of interviews and observations, one of the problems faced was the lack of mastery of English by the students, whereas in Malaysia, English is a second language and is commonly used in urban areas. Therefore, the community service entitled “Fun Easy English” was carried out to increase the ability and motivation of the students to learn English, especially low grade students (grades 1-3). This activity was held on Monday, 29 August 2022, and Thursday, 1 September 2022 using song media and the Total Physical Response method. At the first meeting, 84% of students were able to introduce themselves in English correctly and fluently while at the second meeting 100% of students were able to work on worksheets with scores above 70. Overall, this community service activity ran successfully and smoothly. It is hoped that this kind of activity can be carried out and continued by SB managers and other community service teams

Abstract

Many students face difficulties in passing the English Proficiency Test (EPT) score of 450; whereas it is one of the graduation requirements students must meet. This study aimed to investigate the impact of digital comic-based modules on students’ English Proficiency Test (EPT) achievement. The modules were used during the EPT preparation class which was held for 16 meetings. This was pre-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. One hundred fifty-seven (157) undergraduate students from two different majors, Nursing and Computer Engineering participated in this study. The data were collected by administering pretest and posttest EPT which consisted of 140 questions in total. Then, the scores were analyzed statistically using paired-sample t-test and effect size. Based on the statistical analysis, the results showed an increase in students' EPT scores after learning EPT materials using digital comic-based modules. The increase in students’ EPT scores indicated an improvement in students’ understanding of the materials. Combining texts and images in digital comics provided students with contextual and meaningful learning. The existence of attractive features of digital comics also stimulated other factors including enthusiasm and interest. The transformation of conventional EPT modules to digital comics has made students feel more convenient and thus affected students’ comprehension. From this research, instructors and students are recommended to use digital comic-based modules in EPT preparation classes.
