Abstract

Assuming that textbooks authors have conducted the readability measure, many of its users often take this key feature of a good textbook for granted. Nonetheless, considering the unique context of each classroom and the generic nature of textbooks written for the public, teachers should double-check the appropriateness of the book they use, including its readability. Although tech-assisted readability measurement is developing in many parts of the world, in Indonesia, this area is still under-researched. For this reason, the present study attempts to examine the readability level of an English textbook using Coh-Metrix. Content analysis is employed since the object being analyzed is a textbook. This study also expands previous studies on readability measures by building dialogue between the result of Coh-Metrix measurement and the students’ perceived readability. To obtain the data, an automated Coh-Metrix readability measurement was conducted via cohmetrix.com. Also, to get more profound analysis, a questionnaire on students’ perceived readability was distributed to 35 tenth graders. Then the collected data were analyzed by using interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The finding of this study revealed that regardless of the slight difference between the perceived readability level and the Coh-Metrix-generated readability level, most of the texts in the book are mostly below the students’ level. Arguably, the textbook is relatively potential for language acquisition because it provides comprehensible input.

This paper proposes a practical model for providing clinical supervision to help teachers build their instructional ability by fostering teachers to do self-evaluation of their teaching. This paper also describes the challenges, problems, and practical solutions and strategies for helping teachers build their pedagogic compe-tence in terms of providing English instruction. Abstract

Mentoring is a way of professional development for educators, teachers, and school leaders. This study aims to discover how mentors conceptualized the value of their practice and its impact on their growth and identity while guiding mentees in teacher-research mentoring activities. This study presents a case study of 4 English educators as mentors to gather a rich depiction of their mentoring phases. Understanding the mentors' pedagogy could help in understanding more about the process of their competence-building. Moreover, this process influences the process of their learning and impacts their identity. The data were obtained through critical self-reflection journals, mentoring conversations, and online focus group interviews. A model based on Mezirow's critical self-reflection practice is used to recognize mentors' growth and identity development. It suggested that three broad mentoring categories exist: self-focused, mentee-focused, and relationship-focused, which support them in achieving mentoring expertise. Moreover, mentors' motive is influenced by the identity development that occurs in the sociocultural environment, demonstrating their values, beliefs, and perspectives. This study's results also suggest that the mentoring program can be the basis for training, deploying expertise and competencies, and boosting personal and professional growth.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how language is used to portray Lintang as a resilient and gritty character in the novel Laskar Pelangi, through the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and drawing on Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory. The specific objective of this research is to explore how linguistic choices in the novel construct the character of Lintang in terms of his resilience and grit, focusing on the aspects of judgment, particularly tenacity, capacity, and normality. The method used in this study involves a qualitative analysis of textual evidence from the novel. Linguistic elements related to judgment are identified, categorized, and analyzed based on their contribution to portraying Lintang’s resilience and grit. The findings of this study reveal that Lintang's character is constructed through a combination of linguistic elements that emphasize his extraordinary tenacity, strong capacity, and relatable normality. Despite being frequently underestimated due to his simple physical appearance, these linguistic choices underscore his resilience and grit. Lintang’s ability to overcome societal prejudices and physical limitations highlights the message that true success comes from inner strength and persistence. By illustrating Lintang's journey, Hirata effectively conveys that physical appearance does not define one's potential for greatness. This research contributes to the understanding of how literary characters can inspire resilience and grit in readers, providing valuable insights into storytelling methods that emphasize character development through language.

Abstract

EFL learners often hesitate to communicate in English, especially during in-class activities, because they fear making mistakes. In contrast, students active in IDLE activities are more willing to communicate in English. However, development processes beyond their willingness to communicate (WTC) in informal digital learning of English (IDLE) have not been sufficiently addressed. This study explored how Indonesian EFL learners develop their WTC in English from receptive- and productive-IDLE. This study employed a narrative study. To gain a deep understanding of the stories, we purposely recruited five university EFL learners who regularly practice IDLE. The data included learning diaries and in-depth interviews with stimulus recall. Our qualitative content analysis revealed that students who participated in fan practices initially engaged with WTC, influencing various factors, including the degree of acquaintance, formality of the situation, number of people present, topic of discussion, degree of evaluation, knowledge of the subject, language of discourse, and the language proficiencies of public figures. Our findings also conformed to the pyramid model of willingness to communicate based on students’ IDLE activities. As they gradually developed their confidence and English communication skills, it took a long time, during which some of them began in junior high school and continued their studies at university. Educators may consider explicit supports to tailor in-class and out-of-class IDLE activities, which provide more qualitative and quantitative exposure to the authentic use of English.
