Abstract

In a rapidly interconnected world, where the demand for cross-cultural communication continues to grow, the significance of qualified translators remains crucial. To meet this demand, there is a need to explore innovative ways of designing effective teaching and learning materials for translation courses, including in the English Department, Politeknik Negeri Padang. This study aims to investigate the significance of developing innovative materials adapted to the unique needs of the translation classroom. In this study, two perspectives were applied, considering both the students’ perspectives and the professional translators’ perspectives, as experts. The study was part of an R&D study utilizing mixed approaches, incorporating observation, interviews, and questionnaires to ensure comprehensive and insightful results. The collected data was then descriptively analyzed. Through the needs analysis, the study contributes to the enhancement of the quality of information during the development of innovative materials to cultivate a new generation of competent translators.

Abstract

EFL pronunciation learning is known to be teacher-centered, in which students are reliant on the feedback given by their teachers. Fortunately, the presence of technology-based learning tools is believed to be able to reduce students' dependency on teachers. A built-in Automatic Speech Recognition technology (ASR): ELSA Speak is a mobile-based application that could help students with pronunciation learning by providing prompt feedback and detailed evaluation of its users' pronunciation accuracy. The objective of this study was to examine the use of the mobile-based application, ELSA, in pronunciation learning and whether it could stimulate learners to become more autonomous. A mix-method approach was employed in this study. The quantitative data, in the forms of pre-test and post-test, was gathered through students' pronunciation recordings available in ELSA. This data was analyzed using the paired sample t-test. In addition, a Google Form questionnaire, in five-point Likert Scale, was used to support the quantitative findings. Meanwhile, a semi-structured interview with selected participants served as the qualitative one. These data were analyzed thematically based on the participants' responses. The result shows that incorporating mobile-based technology into English pronunciation learning could provide an opportunity for students to improve their pronunciation. Moreover, students could also broaden their repertoire of available practice strategies that might be useful to improve their autonomous learning ability.

Abstract

Preparing students for professional communication in English for Journalism requires more than linguistic accuracy; it demands authentic, workplace-oriented learning environments that replicate editorial processes. Despite the increasing use of project-based learning (PBL) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), few studies have examined digital newsroom simulations aligned with vocational “teaching factory” models. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Crewpers, a student-developed digital journalism platform designed as an authentic newsroom simulation, in enhancing vocational English for Journalism instruction. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed with 16 students enrolled in the D4 English for Business and Professional Communication program at a public polytechnic in Indonesia. Using a validated 16-item questionnaire, student perceptions were measured across four dimensions: critical thinking, collaboration, journalistic production, and communication. Paired-sample t-test results revealed statistically significant improvements in all dimensions (p < .001), with the largest gains observed in journalistic production, where students reported greater confidence in producing publishable news content. Students also highlighted features such as real-time editorial feedback, role distribution, and public publishing as central to their learning gains. These findings suggest that Crewpers effectively bridges ESP instruction with professional performance tasks, offering a replicable model of simulation-based pedagogy for vocational contexts. While limited by sample size and reliance on self-reported data, this study underscores the pedagogical value of integrating digital newsroom platforms into ESP and recommends future research using mixed-method designs to assess long-term impacts on writing quality and professional readiness.
