Abstract

Over past few decades, research on authentic materials has been focused on helping teachers provide their learners’ teaching materials. Most of the researches in this area explore the benefits and drawbacks of authentic materials utilization in the classroom. This multiple case study aims at investigating benefits of and barriers in using authentic materials presented as a digital media used in their EFL classrooms. Document and an interview were employed to reveal the teachers’ perception. The findings indicate although it was considered difficult to find and organize, digitized authentic materials helped teachers in teaching English as a Foreign Language for learners with various levels and backgrounds. Its use could help teachers motivate and promote their students’ interest in learning. However, disselection and misuse of it might not meet students’ needs and interest in learning. Good teachers’ capacity in finding and using the digitized authentic materials could encourage better learning process and students’ better learning achievement. Therefore, it is recommended that for the further study, learners’ perception also need to be explored.

Abstract

The implementation of translation strategy has become a significant issue in several countries amidst the constant discussion of technology integration in language learning. Although it has long been regarded as not reliable by some researchers since it is highly associated with grammar-translation methods, several EFL countries still regard translation strategy as an interactive learning strategy which focuses on learners. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the attitude of EFL learners in a rural area in Indonesia towards the implementation of translation strategy in language learning. It also attempts to find out whether translation strategy is effective to foster learner autonomy. Applying a qualitative case study to a group of high school students from a rural area in Indonesia, questionnaires and focus group interviews were used to collect the data. The result showed that the participants perceived translation as a useful learning strategy to foster learner autonomy in an EFL context since it encouraged them to work collaboratively instead of depending on the teacher.

Abstract

This community service program was initiated to address challenges faced by vocational high school teachers in Yogyakarta. The primary issue is the lack of teacher preparedness to implement differentiated learning models in English lessons. Teachers often lack confidence in their ability to design engaging and relevant learning scenarios for students with diverse characteristics. Additionally, there is a tendency among teachers to assess student skills and readiness uniformly, leading to suboptimal delivery of varied activities, materials, and resources that cater to individual learning styles and preferences. To address these challenges, a workshop was organized to enhance teachers' understanding and skills in differentiated English learning. The workshop aimed at improving the pedagogical competence of vocational high school English teachers in Yogyakarta was conducted between May and June 2024, both online and offline. The program included practical experience-sharing sessions, offline workshops, and online mentoring to review teaching modules created by 49 vocational high school teachers. These modules were based on differentiated learning principles tailored to vocational education. The teachers provided positive feedback on the workshop, indicating that they found the facilities and presentation of the material highly beneficial. The success of this workshop, centered on differentiated learning, underscores its impact on enhancing the pedagogical skills of vocational high school English teachers.

Abstract

The integration of technology into education has illuminated new dimensions of English Language Teaching (ELT) practices.  Although technology-assisted language learning has been introduced in the EFL context for some time, its application as an autonomous learning tool for teaching writing skills remains underdeveloped. This study aims to examine the impact of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) when employed as an autonomous learning tool on EFL students’ writing skills. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings were categorized into two main themes; the degree of autonomy achieved and the students’ learning behaviors. The results indicate that the advantages of MALL significantly contributed to enhancement of students’ autonomous writing skills, as evidenced by an increase in the average writing score from 57.25 to 67.7. This study concludes that both the benefits and limitations of MALL implementation must be considered, as they present significant impacts and potential challenges in achieving a high-quality ELT classroom. Finally, the insights from this study may provide valuable guidance for teachers seeking to incorporate MALL into their writing classroom.
