Abstract

Pemberdayaan dan pengembangan sumber daya manusia menjadi suatu keharusan dalam memajukan wilayah pedesaaan. Peran Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang melekat pada profesi dosen salah satunya diimplementasikan dalam program peningkatan kreativitas warga masyarakat. Pada pengabdian masyarakat ini, tim dosen UNY melaksanakan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang berfokus pada peningkatan keterampilan pembuatan konten media sosial untuk promosi desa. Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberikan pengetahuan baik teori maupun praktik kepada warga masyarakat dalam memajukan kawasan Dusun Krapyak IX Seyegan melalui pelatihan dan pendampingan pembuatan konten media sosial untuk promosi Desa. Program pengabdian dilaksanakan di Dusun Krapyak IX, Seyegan, Sleman melalui empat tahap yakni: a) need analysis, b) pelaksanaan pelatihan, c) pendampingan dan praktik, dan 4) evaluasi. Adapun  metode pelatihan meliputi ceramah,  tanya  jawab, diskusi dan praktik. Hasil pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah masyarakat mampu menigkatkan kemampuannya dalam mengembangkan konten media sosial untuk promosi desa secara digital. Peserta antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan dan pendampingan. Selain itu, peserta mampu menghasilkan konten promosi Desa di media sosial Instagram, facebook, dan twitter.

Abstract

This research discusses the song entitled "The Man" by Taylor Swift from a gender perspective. This song describes women's views on how their lives would be different if they were men. The aim of this research is to determine the specific representation of gender equality in Taylor Swift's song "The Man". This type of research is content analysis with a deconstruction approach; we will delve into the lyrics of this song and analyze how Taylor Swift highlights gender inequality and stereotypes that are still widespread in society. The results show that in her song entitled "The Man", Taylor Swift describes how stereotypes still exist in society regarding gender inequality. The gender equality that Taylor Swift advocates through her songs includes many things such as; freedom to choose a lifestyle, freedom to be a leader, freedom to work without discrimination from the social environment and several other freedoms that are difficult for women to obtain.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the development of left and right brain accommodation-oriented English language material for high school. This study applied Research and Development research design to general the English material whole accommodated the right brain and left brain. This study voluntarily involved the tent grade students at SMA Negeri 7 Yogyakarta who consisted of 89 students to fill in the questionnaire which dealt with target needs and learning needs. The materials development approach used in this research was based on The Dick and Carey model which included conducting a needs analysis, designing syllabus, developing the draft of the materials, validating the English materials from experts, and doing try-out. The result of the study shows that the developed English materials are appropriate for the students referring to the experts’ responses to the questionnaire with the average score from expert judgement 1 is 3.68, and from expert judgement 2 is 3.67. This is supported by students’ responses to the questionnaire with average score 3.05. This suggests that the English materials facilitate students to accommodate both sides of their brain.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PPM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris warga Dusun Krapyak IX, Margoagung, Seyegan, Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 37 warga Dusun Krapyak IX. Bentuk kegiatan berupa pelatihan Bahasa Inggris yang berfokus pada speaking dan pengenalan vocabulary untuk konten promosi Dusun Krapyak IX sebagai desa wisata melalui media sosial. Kegiatan PPM terdiri atas tiga tahap, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Pada tahap perencanaan dilakukan need analysis untuk mengetahui kebutuhan warga Dusun Krapyak IX, pada tahap pelaksanaan peserta diberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris, dan tahap evaluasi bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi penyelenggaraan pelatihan menggunakan google form. Hasil kegiatan PPM ini adalah warga Dusun Krapyak IX dapat memiliki pengalaman dan praktik langsung berbicara Bahasa Inggris (speaking) dan menggunakan vocabulary untuk promosi Dusun Krapyak IX sebagai desa wisata di media sosial. Implikasi kegiatan ini bagi masyarakat adalah peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris yang memungkinkan warga untuk lebih efektif mempromosikan desa mereka kepada wisatawan internasional, sehingga dapat meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan dan berdampak positif terhadap perekonomian lokal.Rekomendasi dari kegiatan ini adalah perlunya program pelatihan dan pendampingan berkelanjutan untuk memastikan warga terus mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris mereka dan meningkatkan efektivitas promosi desa sebagai destinasi wisata.

Abstract

Workshop peningkatan skor TOEFL bagi mahasiswa Asrama Kujang merupakan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk membantu mahasiswa mencapai skor TOEFL yang memenuhi syarat kelulusan. Kegiatan ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tingginya kebutuhan mahasiswa terhadap sertifikat TOEFL dengan skor yang memadai sebagai salah satu syarat wajib kelulusan di berbagai program studi di universitas yang ada di Yogyakarta. Workshop ini dirancang untuk memberikan bimbingan intensif, materi pembelajaran yang terstruktur, serta strategi efektif dalam menghadapi tes TOEFL. Metode yang digunakan dalam workshop ini meliputi sesi pengajaran teori, latihan soal, simulasi tes, dan evaluasi berkala. Para peserta juga diberikan akses ke berbagai sumber belajar dan tes praktek TOEFL untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mereka secara mandiri. Instruktur dalam kegiatan ini adalah dosen-dosen berpengalaman dan ahli bahasa Inggris yang memiliki kompetensi tinggi dalam pengajaran TOEFL. Hasil dari pelaksanaan workshop ini menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam skor TOEFL mahasiswa, yang ditunjukkan oleh data pre-test dan post-test. Selain itu, para peserta juga melaporkan peningkatan kepercayaan diri dan pemahaman yang lebih baik mengenai format dan strategi tes TOEFL. Dengan adanya program ini, diharapkan mahasiswa yang ada diasrama Kujang Yogyakarta dapat lebih siap dalam memenuhi persyaratan kelulusan dan menghadapi tantangan akademik di tingkat yang lebih tinggi.

Abstract

The CEFR, known globally as a key framework for structuring English language curricula, has been adopted in many educational systems worldwide. However, despite its widespread recognition, its practical application within Indonesian universities has not gained the same level of traction, remaining relatively limited compared to other regions. This difference has attracted scholarly interest, leading to research exploring the framework's applicability and potential adaptation. The research investigated how students view the fit between the framework and their expectations of the competencies of English teacher training graduates. To gather numerical data on students’ perceptions, a targeted sample of 94 participants completed a questionnaire developed based on C1-level CEFR descriptors. Complementing the quantitative data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of respondents to gather richer qualitative insights into their perceptions. Analysis of the quantitative data, including calculating the average score, showed a generally positive student perception of CEFR, with an average score of 3.78. Qualitative analysis of the interview data identified four key reasons for student agreement with the CEFR descriptors: alignment with job requirements, usefulness as communication tools, the reflection of the community expectations, and potential to support their learning. The findings imply that the stakeholders must specify the curriculum framework in which CEFR adoption can be an option. Based on these findings, it is implied that stakeholders responsible for curriculum development should specify a clearly defined framework within which CEFR adoption can be effectively implemented.

Abstract

This study explores English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning within the framework of Indonesian-English intercultural learning. Through library research, the paper investigates the interconnection between language and culture, focusing on the perspectives of language, culture, and their roles in EFL learning contexts in Indonesia. The research addresses the significance of integrating both source culture (Indonesian) and target culture (English) in language education to develop students' intercultural awareness and competence. Findings highlight that effective EFL learning goes beyond grammatical competence to include cultural understanding, where learners become aware of both their own cultural identity and the target culture simultaneously. The study concludes that the balanced integration of source and target cultural elements in EFL classrooms enables learners to appreciate cultural differences, develop pride in their own culture, and become effective intercultural communicators. The paper offers suggestions for implementing intercultural awareness in Indonesian EFL settings, emphasizing the importance of creating meaningful learning activities that facilitate cultural exploration while developing English language skills.

Abstract

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic success, yet many university students, including those at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, struggle with comprehension due to limited vocabulary, lack of critical thinking, low motivation, and traditional teaching methods; thus, innovative strategies like visual media are needed to foster interest and improve reading skills. One such medium, the wall magazine, has shown promise in primary education but remains underexplored in higher education, prompting this study to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing students’ reading abilities and to provide insights for more engaging and interactive pedagogical approaches. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, involving 39 second-semester English Education students at Yogyakarta State University and several key informants to explore the effectiveness of wall magazine media in enhancing reading skills. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques with triangulation strategies to ensure validity and credibility. This study confirms that wall magazine media effectively enhances reading skills by increasing student motivation, comprehension, and engagement. The project-based and collaborative nature of the media fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of ownership in learning. While students and lecturers responded positively, improvements in content updates and display logistics are still needed. Therefore, integrating wall magazine projects into the curriculum offers a sustainable, student-centered approach to developing literacy and 21st-century skills.
