Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the application of digital philology in Qur’anic manuscript studies, particularly through an analysis of the Corpus Coranicum project as a model for critical engagement with early Qur’anic texts. Methodology: Employing a qualitative approach based on literature review, this research is combined with a case analysis of two core issues: the orthographic variation in early Qur’anic manuscripts and the presence of the ʿUthmānī archetype in written form. Findings: The findings demonstrate that the digital tools within Corpus Coranicum enable more precise and in-depth cross-manuscript textual comparisons. These results reveal orthographic variations based on geographical regions and provide preliminary evidence for the consolidation of the ʿUthmānī text. Research Implications: Implicatively, the study illustrates how digital philology can enrich methodologies in Islamic studies, create opportunities for digital-based academic training, and enhance access to manuscript data. Originality/Value: This research offers an original contribution by emphasizing the importance of integrating digital technologies into Qur’anic studies—particularly in Indonesia, where academic contexts have yet to widely develop this approach.

Abstract

This article analyzes the transformation of paradigms in the literature of Ulumul Quran and Ulumul Hadis in Indonesia. The study employs historical, discourse analysis, and al-Jabiri’s reading theory to explore the construction and dynamics of these disciplines. The findings reveal that the study of Ulumul Quran and Ulumul Hadis in Indonesia experienced stagnation until the late 20th century, with most literature being reiterations of Middle Eastern scholars’ works. However, the post-1990s era marked a paradigm shift influenced by Western thought and modern approaches such as phenomenology and hermeneutics. This study recommends interdisciplinary methods to enhance the relevance of these fields in Indonesia's contemporary socio-cultural context. Additionally, Living Quran and Living Hadis studies are proposed as new research directions to explore the social and religious dimensions of Islamic texts.

Abstract

This study critically examines al-Suyūṭī’s claim that all surah names in the Qur’an are tawqīfī, a theme that has received limited scholarly attention. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article classifies al-Suyūṭī’s arguments in Al-Itqān fī ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān and evaluates them based on the presence or absence of reliable prophetic or companion-based reports. The primary source for this research is Al-Itqān, supported by secondary literature from contemporary studies on Qur’anic sciences. The findings show that al-Suyūṭī’s arguments can be divided into two major categories: surah names supported by authentic hadith, and those derived from scholarly usage without strong textual basis. This study argues that al-Suyūṭī’s assertion of tawqīfiyyah is not fully supported by his own evidence, indicating inconsistencies in his methodological approach. The research contributes to Qur’anic studies by offering a more nuanced understanding of the historical development of surah naming and highlighting the interplay between revelation-based and ijtihād-based nomenclature.

Abstract

Amid accusations of al-Māwardī’s theological alignment with the Muʿtazilite and criticisms that his interpretation of the jināyah (criminal law) verses contradicts human values, this study highlights the anthropocentric nature of his exegetical approach. By analyzing his commentary on jināyah verses, it demonstrates how he employs the tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr (tradition-based) method—relying on the hadith and accounts from the Prophet’s companions and the tābi’īn—which characterizes his work as tafsīr jam’i al-aqwāl (an eclectic method). In presenting the perspectives of the companions and classical scholars, al-Māwardī’s commentary shares similarities with that of al-Ṭabarī (though less comprehensive), Ibn al-Jawzī’s Zād al-Masīr, and al-Ṣābūnī’s Ṣafwah al-Tafāsīr. However, it diverges significantly from al-Ṣābūnī’s other work, Rawā’i‘ al-Bayān Tafsīr Āyāt al-Aḥkām. Furthermore, this research proves that al-Māwardī consistently applies the Shāfi‘ī method of legal deduction (istinbāṭ al-ḥukm), wherein legal rulings must fundamentally derive from the Quran, hadith, opinions of the companions, takhyīr (option), ijmā‘ (consensus), and istidlāl (inferential reasoning).

Abstract

The writing of the Qur’an mushaf in the archipelago shows a diversity of orthography that reflects the dynamics of the local Islamic scientific tradition, especially in the 18th century. One of the important manuscripts from this period is the Mushaf Al-Qur'an by Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari, a prominent scholar from South Kalimantan. This article aims to examine the orthographic characteristics of the Qur'an in the manuscript and examine its degree of conformity with the rules of rasm ‘Usmaniy. This study uses a qualitative approach with philological methods, through a descriptive analysis of the forms of writing the Qur’an which include the rules of ḥazf, ziyadah, badal, as well as fasl and wasl. The results of the study show that in general this mushaf shows a tendency to follow rasm ‘Usmaniy, but in some parts there are orthographic variations influenced by the rules of rasm imla’iy and local writing practices. These variations not only reflect the flexibility in the tradition of copying mushaf in the archipelago, but also show the scientific authority of copyists in adapting the rules of writing to the local context. These findings confirm that the 18th-century Nusantara mushaf cannot be understood solely as a passive copy of Middle Eastern standards, but rather as an intellectual product that lives in the local cultural and scientific space.

Abstract

The concept of al-nabī al-ummī has existed since the beginning of Islam. The Prophet Muḥammad declared himself as al-nabī al-ummī, both in the Qur’ān and Ḥaḍth. However, most Muslim scholars disagree if al-ummī means illiterate. Through the linguistic and historical approach, this paper would like to test the question ”whether the implication of al-nabī alummī concepts in the Qur’ānic orthography (rasm) is tawqīfī or iṣṭilāḥī.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.901
