Abstract

Background: Materials commonly used for root canal filling of primary teeth is zinc oxide eugenol. Eugenol has some disadvantages that can irritate the periapical tissues, has the risk of disturbing the growth and development of permanent tooth buds, and has a narrow antibacterial spectrum. Studies showed that propolis at concentration of 20 % has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the antimicrobial activity of root canal pastes with the additional of propolis additional to zinc oxide eugenol (ZOEP) and to zinc oxide (ZOP). Methods: Polybacteria cultures collected from root canals of necrotic primary molar from 5 children patients who received root canal treatment. The bacteria were grown in BHI Broth, and inoculated into Muller Hinton Agar media. The agar plates was divided into 3 areas, and one well was made at each area. The first well filled with ZOE as a control, second well filled with ZOEP and the third well filled with ZOP, then incubated for 24 hour at 370 C. Antimicrobial activity was determined by measuring the diameters of inhibition zones of polybacteria growth. The data were statistically analyzed by independent T-test. Results: The pasta mixture of zinc oxide propolis had the strongest antibacterial activity against polybacteria of necrotic primary molar, followed by zinc oxide eugenol propolis paste, and zinc oxide eugenol paste. There were significant differences of inhibition zones between ZOE, ZOEP and ZOP (p<0,05). Conclusion: The study suggested that the additional of propolis to zinc oxide paste could increase the antimicrobial effect against root canal polybacteria of necrotic primary molar.

Abstract

Early childhood caries and stunting are two major health issues that often coexist, particularly in developing countries. Both conditions have long-term impacts on children's growth, development, and overall quality of life. This literature review aims to explore the association between early childhood care and development (ECC) and stunting from a public health perspective. The method employed was a narrative review of scientific articles sourced from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases from 2017 to 2024. The findings indicate a strong correlation between poor nutritional status and a high incidence of early childhood caries among preschool-aged children. Shared risk factors such as unhealthy dietary patterns, low parental health literacy, and limited access to dental care services further reinforce this link. The review emphasizes the importance of an integrated, promotive, and preventive approach that combines nutrition and oral health interventions within public health programs. Integrating oral health services into stunting prevention strategies at the community level is considered essential for improving children's overall health outcomes.

Abstract

The irrational use of antibiotics in dentistry, including self-medication, incomplete treatment, and inappropriate prescriptions, remains a major public health concern that contributes to antimicrobial resistance. At the same time, many communities lack sufficient access to accurate information on the proper use of antibiotics in dental care. Situation analysis at Puskesmas Pegirian highlighted that Kader Surabaya Hebat (KSH) play a central role in health promotion but require greater knowledge and confidence to educate the public on rational antibiotic practices. To address this gap, a Training of Trainers program was designed and implemented with KSH as participants. The training combined health counseling sessions, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations focused on the importance of rational antibiotic use in dentistry. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, participants completed a pre-test before the training and a post-test after the sessions. The results showed a clear improvement in knowledge and awareness, with KSH reporting stronger confidence to deliver educational messages within their communities. This initiative demonstrates that targeted training supported by measurable evaluation can effectively strengthen the role of KSH. The conclusion emphasizes that investing in KSH capacity is a sustainable strategy to promote rational antibiotic use in dentistry at the community level.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a prevalent public health issue, particularly in rural areas with limited access to dental care. This study aimed to assess the oral health status of residents in Randegansari Village through dental screening and DMF-T score analysis. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 participants aged 13–65 years. The results showed a high DMF-T score, with missing teeth contributing the most. The high prevalence of tooth loss and untreated caries indicated inadequate access to dental care and a lack of awareness regarding oral hygiene. The primary challenges identified were the absence of preventive measures and limited access to restorative treatment. To address this issue, educational programs on oral health, preventive interventions such as fluoride applications, and improved access to dental care are essential. The study concludes that increased community awareness and dental services are necessary to reduce caries prevalence and improve oral health in rural populations.
