This study discusses the concept of multiculturalism according to the santris and its relation to their religiosity. Santris are those who study at the pesantren, the indigenous form of education in Indonesia. The paper offers a descriptive elaboration of what these santris think of multiculturalism and how they relate it to their belief and religious tradition. It argues that multiculturalism has been the very character of the pesantren in which santris of various cultural background stay to study. How thismulticulturalism works and how it influences the santris in the way they look at the idea of nation-hood is the question that needs to be explored. And this paper aims at doing just that. Nation-hood is just another form of multiculturalism. While the santris are used to a life of a multicultural nature, the question of how they adapt to the national culture on the one hand, and how religion shapes the way they behave on the other becomes of particular interest. This paper will show that religion and nationalism are two sides of the same coinâas it wereâin the life of the santris.

Corruption is a complex act of crime. Its complexity does not only deal with legal issue but also social, political, and cultural issues. Law approach is more widely used in the eradication of corruption because corruption is a matter of law. However, seeing a corruption as a matter of law issue is the way to simplify the problem. The complexity of corruption makes this issue is feasibly approached through a variety of perspectives, one of those is cultural approach. The aim of this research is to reveal the cultural obstacles in eradicating corruption in Indonesia as well as to describe cultural conditions which led to a massive corruption. Formal juridical approach in eradicating corruption is considered to be done in a large number although they did not show maximal results. Such massive corruption in Indonesia seems to draw a conclusion that corruption has become a culture of the citizens of our nation. It means that there is a variety of cultural symptoms which encourage the act of corruption performed easily in every institution. There is a low mentality culture in the heart of the corruptor to carry out the action. That is why; we need a strategy in order to eradicate the culture of corruption in Indonesia.

This paper examines a late 19th-century brochure entitled ‘Perdjalanan ke-‘Tanah-Tjoetji’ (A Pilgrimage to the ‘Holy Land’) written by Dja Edar Moeda, a Dutch-educated native teacher and a pioneer journalist and vernacular press entrepreneur in Sumatra. The text offers a critical perspective on the Hajj, differing from the majority of this corpus, which tends to show religious enthusiasm and saintly connotations. This paper demonstrates that the ‘deviant’ voice on the Hajj in the Brochure reflects the author’s concerns. As a native intellectual and religious modernist with a Western-secular education, he worries about the fate of his fellow native pilgrims, who are often victimised by rampant fraudulent practices in the organisation of the Hajj due to their illiteracy, map illiteracy, innocence, naivety and tendency to be submissive in their religious practice. In this respect, the Brochure indirectly criticises the Dutch East Indies colonial authority’s deficiencies in organising the pilgrimage and protecting the pilgrims as its colonial subjects.
