Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at finding out the quality, index of difficulty, discriminating power, and effectiveness of distractors of teacher-made English summative test item format. The sample of this study was 44 eleventh-grade students of one public senior high school in Palembang. The data were collected from the result of the English summative test responded by eleventh-grade students of the school. The data were analyzed by using the table of multiple- choice test item format and item analysis. The result of the test item format showed that none of the item was in the good (accepted) category, 34 (85%) items were in the moderate category, and 6 (15%) items were in poor category. The result of index difficulty showed that 10 (25%) items were in difficult category, 12 (30%) items were in easy category, and 18 (45%) items were in satisfactory category. The result of discriminating power showed that 16 (40%) items had poor discriminating power, 10 (25%) items had moderate discriminating power, and 14 (35%) items had good discriminating power. The result of the effectiveness of distractors showed that from a total of 160 distractors 41% of them functioned effectively, 51% of the distractors functioned less effectively, and 8% of the distractors were ineffective. In short, the teacher- made English summative test of the eleventh-grade students of the school was not acceptable to be used as an instrument to evaluate the students’ English learning due to many aspects of a good test in terms of quality, index of difficulty, discrimination power and effectiveness of distractors were not fulfilled. Keywords: test item analysis, teacher-made summative test, English Abstrak: Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kualitas, indeks kesulitan, kekuatan pembeda, dan keefektipan pengecoh terhadap format butir tes sumatif Bahasa Inggris. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 44 siswa kelas 11 Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 3 Palembang. Data studi ini merupakan jawaban hasil sumatif tes yang dikerjakan oleh ke 44 siswa tersebut dan dianalisa menggunakan tabel format butir tes berbentuk pilihan ganda. Hasil format butir tes menunjukkan tidak satupun butir soal berkatagori bagus. Dari sejumlah 40 soal, 34 (85%) butir soal tergolong sedang dan sisanya 6 soal (15%) termasuk katagori kurang. Dari hasil indeks kesulitan butir soal terdapat 10 butir (25%) dianggap sulit, 12 butir  (30%) mudah , dan 18 butir (45%) tergolong memuaskan. Untuk kekuatan pembeda, terdapat 16 butir (40%) soal kurang, 10 butir (25%) butir sedang, dan 14 butir (35%) dianggap bagus. Sementara itu, hasil keefektipan pengecoh menunjukkan 41% dari total 160 pengecoh efektif, 51% kurang efektif, dan 8% tidak efektif. Secara ringkas tes sumatif Bahasa Inggris buatan guru  untuk kelas 11 kurang dapat diterima sebagai instrumen untuk mengevaluasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris siswa dikarenakan terdapat beberapa aspek sebagai persyaratan tes yang bagus tidak sempurna terpenuhi. Kata-kata kunci: analisis butir tes, tes sumatif buatan guru, Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims at investigating cultural content in the textbooks in terms of four frameworks namely cultural types, cultural themes, cultural dimensions, and cultural senses. A content analysis under the paradigm of qualitative study was employed. Three English textbooks published by the government and Erlangga were chosen as the objects in this study. Additionally, teachers’ voice was needed in order to support and enrich the analysis. Results of the study showed that the textbook published by the government was heavily loaded with cultural aspects dealing with Indonesian culture, followed by target culture and international target culture whereas two textbooks published by Erlangga presented target culture as the highest percentage, which then followed by source culture and international target culture. In terms of cultural themes, those three textbooks contained bigger portion of big ‘C’ than little ‘c’. For cultural dimensions, the appearance of persons dominates all forms of the textbooks while semantic sense has the highest rank for cultural senses. In relation to teachers’ opinion of the textbooks, they felt unsatisfied on the distribution of the cultural content and hoped that the textbooks could provide more materials regarding Indonesian culture instead of target culture. These results lead to the conclusion that textbook writers should revise and reconsider the cultural content that should be introduced in the textbooks.Keywords: Cultural content, content analysis, English textbooksAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvesitgasi muatan budaya yang ada dalam buku teks dari empat sisi yaitu dari jenis budaya, tema budaya, dimensi budaya, dan indra budaya. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan metode analisis isi. Terdapat tiga buku teks bahasa Inggris yang diterbitkan oleh pemerintah dan Erlangga yang dipilih menjadi objek dalam kajian ini. Selain itu, pendapat dari para guru juga diperlukan dalam rangka mendukung dan memperkaya analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hanya buku teks yang diterbitkan oleh pemerintah sangat sarat dengan aspek budaya yang berhubungan dengan budaya Indonesia, diikuti dengan budaya target dan budaya target internasional sedangkan dua buku yang diterbitkan oleh Erlangga menargetkan budaya target sebagai persentase tertinggi, yang kemudian diikuti oleh budaya sumber dan budaya target internasional. Dalam hal tema budaya, tiga buku teks tersebut berisi porsi budaya yang terlihat (‘C’) lebih banyak daripada budaya yang tidak terlihat (‘c’). Untuk dimensi budaya, aspek ‘orang’ mendominasi semua bentuk buku pelajaran. Dari sisi indra budaya, aspek semantik memiliki peringkat tertinggi. Hasil dari wawancara dengan para guru menunjukan ada rasa ketidakpuasan terhadap distribusi konten budaya yang ada, Pemerintah dan penerbit buku diharapkan dapat menyediakan buku pelajaran bahasa Inggris yang lebih banyak berisi materi tentang budaya Indonesia, bukan budaya target. Hasil ini mengarah pada kesimpulan bahwa penulis buku teks harus merevisi dan mempertimbangkan kembali konten budaya yang harus diperkenalkan dalam buku pelajaran bahasa Inggris.Kata-kata kunci: Analisis isi, konten budaya, buku teks bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Abstract: Role Play is an interesting strategy which gives a great benefit for many students.  It can be used to encourage general oral fluency or to train students’ speaking for specific situation. The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there were significant interaction effects of Role Play and self-concept, gender, and grammar mastery on the tenth graders’ speaking achievement. Factorial design was used in this study which involved two groups (experimental and control groups). Forty students were selected as the sample of this study and equally divided into experimental and control groups. The result showed that the experimental group had better improvement in speaking achievement than the control group which did not get any treatment using Role Play. However, there were no interaction effects between Role Play Technique and Self Concept, Gender, Grammar Mastery on the students’ speaking achievement.Keywords: role play, speaking achievement, gender, self-concept, grammar masteryAbstrak: Role play adalah strategi yang menarik yang memberikan manfaat besar bagi banyak siswa. Role Play dapat digunakan untuk mendorong kefasihan secara umum atau untuk melatih siswa berkomunikasi dalam situasi yang lebih spesifik. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya pengaruh interaksi yang signifikan antara role play dan konsep diri, gender, dan penguasaan tata bahasa terhadap pencapaian berbicara siswa kelas sepuluh. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain faktorial yang melibatkan empat puluh siswa dan dibagi ke dalam kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen mengalami peningkatan yang lebih baik dalam hal berbicara dari pada kelompok kontrol. Na- mun tidak ada efek interaksi antara tekhnik role play dan konsep diri, gender, dan penguasaan tata bahasa terhadap pencapaian berbicara siswa. Kata-kata Kunci: bermain peran, pencapaian berbicara, jenis kelamin, konsep diri, pengua- saam tata bahasa

Abstract

Abstract: The spread of Covid-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020 has made many changes to human life across the globe. It has dramatically given impacts on various sectors such as government, health, business, and education. In education sector for instance, Covid-19 pandemic has made Indonesian government launched policy related to schooling system, funding reallocation, and teaching and learning implementation. The school system has been adjusted to suit the pandemic, education funding has been reallocated and teaching and learning activity has been shifted to online mode. In higher education, one of the impacts that is encountered by students is related to ELT research. Conducting research as a partial fulfiment of the requirements of obtaining degree needs to be carried out while data collection on research site would hardly be done due to space constraint implemented since the pandemic outbreak. This article discusses the problems emerge during Covid-19 pandemic and the possibility of conducting ELT research in relation to the educational policy Indonesian government has taken.Keywords: Covid-19 pandemic, ELT research, policy, problem, possibilityAbstrak: Menyebarnya pandemi Covid-19 sejak awal tahun 2020 telah membuat banyak perubahan terhadap kehidupan manusia di seluruh belahan dunia. Hal itu secara dramatis telah memberikan dampak terhadap berbagai sektor seperti pemerintahan, kesehatan, bisnis, dan pendidikan. Pada sektor pendidikan contohnya, pandemic Covid-19 telah membuat pemerintah Indonesia mengeluarkan kebijakan yang berhubungan dengan sistem persekolahan, realokasi pendanaan, dan pelaksanaan kegiatan belajar mengajar. Sistem persekolahan disesuaikan untuk mencocoki kondisi saat pandemi, pendanaan pendidikan telah direalokasi, dan aktivitas belajar mengajar beralih ke moda daring. Pada pendidikan tinggi, salah satu dampak yang dirasakan mahasiswa terkait pelaksanaan penelitian pendidikan dibidang Bahasa Inggris. Melaksanakan penelitian yang merupakan salah satu syarat untuk menyelesaikan studi harus dilakukan sementara pengumpulan data di lokasi penelitian sangatlah sulit untuk dilakukan disebabkan kebijakan jaga jarak yang diterapkan selama masa pandemi. Artikel ini membahas permasalahn yang muncul sejak masa pandemi dan kemungkinan melaksanakan penelitian pendidikan di bidang Bahasa Inggris sehubungan dengan kebijakan di bidang pendidikan yang telah diambil pemerintah Indonesia.Kata-kata Kunci: Pandemi Covid-19, penelitian ELT, kebijakan, masalah, kemungkinan

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there were significant improvements in students’ narrative writing achievement and the aspects of  narrative writing between before and after the students were taught by using RT strategy. This study also investigated whether or not there was a significant difference in narrative writing achievement between the students who were taught by using RT strategy and those who were not. The sample of this study was 52 eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Prabumulih, South Sumatera. There were control and experimental groups. To collect the data, each group was assigned a pretest and a post test. The data were analyzed statistically by using paired sample and independent sample t-tests. The findings showed there were significant improvements in students’ narrative writing achievement and the aspects of narrative writing between before and after they were taught by using RT strategy. There was also a significant difference in narrative writing achievement between control and experimental groups. Therefore, it could be concluded that RT strategy can help improve eleventh graders’ narrative writing achievement. Keywords: narrative writing achievement, Reader’s Theatre strategy, eleventh graders

Abstract

Media pembelajaran interaktif (MPI) merupakan komponen penting dalam meningkatkan pencapaian siswa sekaligus motivasi mereka. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, reading menjadi topik yang cukup sulit untuk dipelajari. Ketersediaan teks yang panjang serta soal yang rumit membutuhkan bantuan media yang cukup efketif dan menarik, maka MPI adalah jawabannya. Untuk mengembangkan MPI, terdapat banyak alat yang bisa digunakan. Pilihan paling lumrah dan efisien adalah Microsoft Powerpoint (PPT). Guru dapat memanfaatkan PPT dalam pengembangan MPI asalkan mengetahui beragam fitur yang dibutuhkan. Di area Sumatera Selatan sendiri, yang mana masih ada wilayah-wilayah terbatas akan koneksi internet, PPT bisa diandalkan dalam hal media pembelajaran. Untuk itu, Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan (OKUS) menjadi target pendampingan tim Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. Letaknya yang cukup sulit ditempuh dan sarana internetnya yang kurang stabil dapat dibantu dengan kehadiran MPI berbantuan PPT. Kegiatan dilaksanakan mulai dari September hingga Oktober 2024. Mode luring dan daring menjadi pilihan tim pelaksana. Secara bergantian, anggota tim menyampaikan materi-materi yang telah disusun. Lalu, di minggu ke-empat pendampingan, seluruh peserta diminta untuk mengembangkan MPI mereka sendiri yang nantinya akan digunakan di kelas. Keberhasilan pendampingan diukur melalui pre-test dan postest yang disebar secara digital. 25 orang guru yang berasal dari MGMP Bahasa Inggris OKU Selatan terdaftar sebagai peserta kegiatan ini. Pada akhir program, kedua puluh lima orang peserta ini berhasil mengembangkan media pembelajaran interaktif masing-masing dan mereka juga menunjukkan peningkatan pada beberapa elemen seperti pemahaman konsep MPI (52.6%), pemahaman fitur PPT (57.1%), integrasi audio/video ke dalam slide (71.4%), dan langkah-langkah pembuatan MPI (63.2%).

Abstract

The identity transition of four prospective professional teachers while undergoing a professional development program is essential to consider. This research aims to understand the dynamics and processes that allow professional identities to develop and change. This research uses qualitative research and Schlossberg's transition model as a framework. The research participants were four prospective teachers from the Teacher Professional Education program. Data collection was carried out using the narrative inquiry method. The data analysis technique uses qualitative descriptive analysis. This study found that identity trajectories from the pre-transition period contributed to their current identity transition. Their previous change in identity was because teaching is an honorable profession with other perceived benefits, such as economic and cultural capital. In this program, prospective teachers said there was a transformation in their professional experience. The study emphasizes the importance of continuing education for prospective teachers to become professional teachers. Teacher education plays a vital role in ensuring that teachers have a strong foundation in the theory and practice of education. Qualified teachers are critical in providing effective and quality education to students, so teacher education is essential to the education system.
