Abstract

Abstract: YouTube resources have contributed significantly to the language learning especial- ly for multimodal literacies including listening and pronunciation. By using different kinds of mode, learners are exposed to more natural and received pronunciation of audiovisual texts in English. Minimal pairs, word transition, intonation, word stress combined with facial expres- sions, body language, eye contact, pose, pictures, photographs, musical instrument as back- grounding illustration have been a rich multimodal source to activate students’ awareness on how meaning-making efforts are not solely constructed verbally. In a more complex digitalized world, technology has provided a more natural setting of communication that students need to be aware of and make use to substitute the limited availability of native speakers especially in remote areas of extended Indonesian archipelago.Keywords: YouTube, multimodal literacies, minimal pairs, word transition, pose.Abstrak: YouTube telah banyak menyumbangkan materi pembelajaran bahasa bagi proses belajar mengajar terutama aspek literasi multimodal termasuk listening (menyimak) dan pro- nunciation (pengucapan). Dengan menggunakan berbagai mode, pembelajar dihadapkan pada pengucapan ekspresi dalam teks audiovisual berbahasa Inggris yang bersifat lebih alamiah. Minimal pairs (pasangan kata yang memiliki kemiripan bunyi), word transition (bunyi khusus sebagai pelumas dalam merangkai dua kata), intonasi, tekanan kata yang dikombinasikan den- gan ekspresi wajah, bahasa tubuh, kontak mata, posetubuh, gambar, foto, iringanmusik,meru- pakan sumber multimodal yang kaya untuk membuat siswa sadar bahwa pembentukan makna tidak semata-mata dikonstruksi secara verbal. Di era digital yang konpleks ini teknologi telah memungkinkan munculnya komunikasi dengan setting yang lebih alamiah yang mengharuskan siswa memanfaatkan kekayaan sumber pembelajaran tersebut sebagai pengganti keberadaan native speaker terutama di daerah terpencil di kepulauan Nusantara (Indonesia) yang maha luas ini. Kata-kata Kunci: YouTube, literasi multimodal, pasangan kata yang memiliki kemiripan bunyi, transisi kata, pose.

Abstract

Nowadays, digital technologies play significant roles in daily life. In educational context, these technologies help learners to gain more knowledge. However, the learners mainly use mobile devices for non-academic purposes, like play game or open the social media applications rather than use the learning applications. In fact, mobile device is an effective media that can make the learners motivated and more interested in learning English. The further research needs to investigate students’ perception on the usage of mobile applications especially in creative writing skill. The participants of the research are 30 senior high school students consisting of 12 males and 18 females. The data is collected by using close-ended questionnaire. This research classified as case study research using randomized sampling. Descriptive data analysis was conducted. The results indicate that mobile applications generally give some advantages in learning English. The perceived benefits of mobile learning comprised opportunities to have ubiquitous learning, have so many exercises, analyze the specific mistakes the learner has made, and also explain the principles behind the correct answer. The learners should maximize the usage of mobile applications positively. The findings have several significant implications for educators, particularly for the use of mobile applications in academic purposes and the strategies to implement mobile learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and describe the cultural elements translated using adaptation technique and linguistic elements translated using variation technique in Batman movie subtitled into Mataraman Javanese. Then explain the translator’s reason of using the adaptation and variation technique, and describe the effect of both techniques towards the translation quality. This is a prescriptive qualitative study and categorized as an embedded research. The sources of data are 1) script of Batman movie and its translation in Mataraman Javanese, 2) the raters as informant who evaluate the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability, and 3) the target audiences to rate the comprehension.Based on the research result, the researcher collected 110 data which consist of 48 adaptation data and 62 variation data. The adaptation data in this study are ecology, material culture, social culture, procedure/ activity/ artistic term, economic system and language. Meanwhile, the variation data contain the personal pronouns for first person, second person, and third person translated into speech level of ngoko (showing low politeness), madya (showing middle politeness) and krama (showing high politeness). The use of adaptation and variation techniques by the translator is in line with the purpose of Mataraman Javanese program held by local TV station to accommodate the local wisdom. For that reason, the translation ideology of this subtitle is domestication by employing those translation techniques which are closes to the target language culture. Generally, the use of adaptation and variation techniques in this study is quite accurate, acceptable in the target culture and comprehensible to the target audience.

Abstract

One of the attempts to acquire an identity in the academic community is by participating in the field development by publishing research papers into reputable journals. However, it requires an adequate understanding of the academic discourse for publication. For this concern, the present study aims to investigate the master students' understanding of the term of academic discourse for publication by going through their rejected research articles and their identities reflected from those rejected manuscripts. A qualitative method was employed, the data were gathered through interview of four master students majoring in English Education and the stories are presented narratively. The results show how the students' lack of comprehension of the notion of academic discourse affects their identities as members of the academic community. Pedagogical implications of this study are intended for the master students as the manifestation for their upcoming article’s writing and publication.

Abstract

Rosi talk show was a conversation program that presented Indonesian politics with supporting and opposing government arguments. The objectives were to find expressive acts and to explain how expressive acts performed negative politeness in the Rosi talk show. The theories used politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987) on negative politeness in expressive act by Searle (1975) by the moderator. This study used qualitative content analysis, and the location was YouTube Channel KompasTV. The data were the moderator utterances involving expressive acts representing negative politeness. This research was a purposive sampling technique focussing on three segments in ‘student’s demonstration and Ade Armando percussion’. The data collection technique was free to engage in conversation to transcribe data audio into written, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was used to know the moderator's politeness tendencies. This study used an interactive method by Miles&Huberman (1992) to conclude. The result showed 18 expressive acts with six sub-strategy of negative politeness. Then, seven expressive speech acts: thanking, apologising, blaming, praising, showing sympathy, and accusing. Next, the dominant moderators’ expressive act was blaming. While there are four subnegative politeness strategies: indirect, making pessimism, minimising impositions, and apologising. The researcher found that negative politeness strategies were realised with expressive acts using suspecting to interact with pros participants.
