Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out the level of the fifth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau in vocabulary knowledge. The sample of this research is class 5C of the third year students of English Study Program which were choosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of the students is 37 students. The data obtained by giving multiple choice tests to students that is adapted by Paul Nation level test . The test asked the students to choose the appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the test. The test consist of 8 indicators of vocabulary. There are noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, synonym, antonym and context clues. The result shows that the students score in vocabulary knowledge is 68.1, and the students have problem in antonym with mean score 39,45 % of correct answers. In conclusion, from the result above shows that the students vocabulary knowledge level of FKIP Universitas Riau is in good level but having problem in finding antonym.Key Words: Study, Vocabulary,Knowledge

Abstract

Abstract: Research of the analysed grammatical errors was conducted in Mai 2019 in the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Riau with the aim to analyz the students errors in writing some paragraph .The method used is the writing test. The objective of the study is to describe the grammatical errors and infer the causes or sources of those errors in writing made by the Fourth semester students of English FKIP UR The results show, the highest error category is the omission errors commited 281 times or 47.22% and the highest factor of errors is developmental committed errors 302 times or 35.99%Key Words: Writing, Error Analisys

Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses student’s errors in using punctuation when writing narrative text and analyzes what possible causes of errors in writing punctuation in narrative text which made by the tenth year students of SMAN 2 Tapung. In this study, 30 students employed were taken as the sample of this research. These 30 students consits of 3 classes, there for classes X1, X2, and X3, each class is taken 10 students. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The descriptive qualitative data were collected from the tests by filling the correct punctuation marks in the narrative text that has been provided. The findings of this study indicate that students still do not understand the use of punctuation in writing narrative text. The punctuation marks used in this study are comma, period, capital letter, exclamation marks and question marks. There are many errors in the use of capital letter. However, in the use of question marks, students’ abilities can be categorized as good. This phenomena happened because the students are lack of knowledge about punctuation, and the students still confused to apply the type of punctuation. Key Words: Errors, Punctuation, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: Textbook is a book that serves as a guideline for learners and teachers in supporting in teaching and learning process. In this study aims to analyze the English textbook based on BSNP. This research attempted to discover whether or not the English textbooks analyzed met the criteria of a good textbook adapted from BSNP instrument and whether it was relevant to the 2013 Curriculum and to find out how those criteria were fulfilled or not by those textbooks. This research design was content analysis with descriptive qualitative method, the subject of this research was English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for second grade of Senior High School, the data source in this research were documents, the technique to collecting the data was content analysis technique. The result of the research showed that Bahasa inggris textbook had met the criteria of good textbook with the fulfillment 84.77 % The textbook was relevant to the 2013 Curriculum because most of the aspect in core competence and basic competence of 2013 Curriculum were reflect in the textbook. Teacher needs to seek out the compatibility of the textbook to use. This book met the most of the requirements and standart of a textbook in implementing 2013 Curriculum. By using this book in teaching and learning process, hopefully a good result is achieved. Through this research, evaluators can understand the result of evaluation by following standard BNSP which minister by education minister. Besides, evaluators can use this information and compare with standard evaluation based on experts to meet good criteria of English textbook.Keywords: textbook, 2013 Curriculum , BSNP instrument for textbook evaluation

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out whether or not there is significant correlation between social media usage and English vocabulary mastery of the fifth-semester students of the English Study Program Universitas Riau. By applying the quantitative method, this research used a population with the total 112 students of the fifth semester, while the samples were 76 students, who were selected using a cluster random sampling technique. The research isntruments are a Questionnaire and a Test. The questionnaire is to measure social media usage (Safitri, 2021; Sivagnanam and Yunus, 2020), and the vocabulary test is to measure the vocabulary mastery of the students adapted from TOEFL book (Riau University Language Center, 2014) and TOEFL book by (Kardimin, 2008). The researcher used IBM SPSS Statistics 25 to analyze the data. The results of the data analysis showed that the average student's use of social media is 92.3, which is considered to be at a "high" level, while the average student's mastery of vocabulary is 79.4, which is considered to be at a "good" level. Additionally, the research finding showed that the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.489, considered a positive and moderate correlation. and the determinant coefficient is 0.2391, which implies social media usage has a 24% influence on the students' vocabulary mastery, meanwhile 76% being influenced by other factors.Keywords: Correlation, Social Media Usage, Vocabulary Mastery
