Abstract

The aims of this work were to study the moisture sorption isotherm and find a suitable mathematical model of sorption isotherm of green beans of  Pia cake from Gorontalo. The sortion isotherm curve was determined by conditioning the Pia cake at various water activities (aw) using saturated salt solution at 30 0C. Data of Pia cake water content at equilibrium were then plotted against water activity. The study found that sorption isotherm of green beanstaste Pia cake were sigmoidal in shape and the mathematical model of Hasley was found to be the most appropriate in predicting the sorption isotherm of green beans taste Pia cake tested. Limits of primary, secondary, and tertiary bound water content were found for the green beans taste Pia as 3,69% db (aw = 0,12), 3,69% db – 7,84% db (aw= 0,12 - 0,42), and 7,84% db – 13,30% db(aw= 0,42 - 1)respectively Key words:   Pia cake,  moisture equilibrium content, mathematicalmodelsof sorption isotherm, dan bound water fractions.

Abstract

"Mulu bebe" plantain (Musa acuminata) is a potential tropical fruit commodity in Indonesia, especially in the North Halmahera area where it can be used as part of food diversification. It is orange in color and no study has been done so far regarding physicochemical properties of starch and its resistant starch. This research was aimed to study the physical properties of “Mulu bebe” plantain flour modified through a spontaneous fermentation process combined with heating and cooling to increase the resistant starch content for use as a prebiotic food source. This study was designed as a completely randomized experiment (CRD) having 2 factors and three replications. The first factor is the spontaneous fermentation time consist of 0, 12, 24 and 36 hours and the second factor is without (0 minutes) and with 45 minutes heating. The result of length of fermentation time showed the lactic acid bacteria grow well during 36 hours fermentation, reaching 8,6 log cfu/ ml. Spontaneous fermentation process alone aid no effect on the physicochemical properties of flour produced, but the presence of heating and cooling process was significantly modified the physicochemical properties. Through the process of 36 hours fermentation, followed by heating at a temperature of 121oC for 45 minutes and cooling at 4 °C for 24 hours produced resistant starch content of 48.53% and in vitro starch digestibility 21,94%.

Abstract

Current post-harvest procedures for food crops are lacking, mostly due to the shortage of adequate postharvest facilities and technology, outdated knowledge and skills of the farmers, and lack of awareness of more modern post-harvest handling. Furthermore, farmers have yet to understand and experience the benefits of post-harvest procedures that can increase crop quality. Harvest and post-harvest procedures for food crops are a strategic step in supporting national food security. Post-harvest procedures directly decrease losses, maintain quality, and increase farmer profits and competitiveness. Surveys by Statistics Indonesia (2012) showed that the national conversion rates of Harvested Dry Grain to Milled Dry Grain are 83,26%, while national conversion rates of Milled Dry Grain to rice are 62,47%. This illustrates a national loss potential throughout the conversion chain, estimated to be 40 billion Rupiahs every year. Efforts to improve harvest and post-harvest procedures for foor crops (with good technological support) need to be targeted towards three things (1) reduction of loss; (2) increase of quality and competitiveness (standardize processes and yield quality); (3) increase of farmer welfare. For this reason, the participation of all postharvest stakeholders is required in standardizing the process and yield quality in post-harvest processes.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to analyze the economy, total costs and economic feasibility of the rice drying process using the VRD60 type AGRINDO vertical dryer in Harapan Bersama Farmer Group in Bigo Selatan Village, Kaidipang District, Bolaang Mongondow Utara Regency, as well as the total cost of the drying process and the economic feasibility of the machine. The results showed the total drying cost of Rp. 126,908/hour. The break even point value or operational break even point of the VRD60 dryer is at an operating level of 443,620 kg/year or the equivalent of Rp140,741,126/year. Analysis of the operational feasibility of the AGRINDO vertical dryer type VRD60 dryer based on the amount of service potential available using a commercial scale calculation basis, the NPV value of Rp. 186,651,936.62, the IRR of 11%, the B/C ratio of 1.07. This condition shows that the dryer is economically feasible. Based on the conditions in the field the machines do not operate in conditions that guarantee sustainability. The sensitivity analysis shows that changes in the variable working hours per year and the price of drying services are very influential on the feasibility of operations with the lowest level being the service price of 1.43 times the total cost of drying services. Keywords: economics analysis. vertical dryer, paddy

Abstract

ABSTRACTSoil tillage aims to create physical soil condition suitable for plant growth. It does that by improving soil water and air association as well as water movement in soil. Mechanical soil tillage requires lots of energy; therefore, good tillage practice needs to carefully consider a proper soil condition in order to get the required result. A technical test to Kubota tractor type M9540 with 95 horsepower was done in this research, as it has never been done before in specific soil condition, topography, and climate of the North Sulawesi. The objectives of this research were to measure aspects of effective field capacity and field efficiency, fuel consumption, to calculate tillage cost and tractor Break Even Point. Soil tillage results were also evaluated by measuring soil bulk density, water infiltration and moisture content before and after tillage. The test was done by cultivating the dry land through performing primary and secondary tillage, each was carried out in three replications. The results show that average effective field capacity for first primary tillage was 1.55 m2/second (0.56 ha/hour), second primary tillage was 1.75 m2/second (0.63 ha/hour), and the secondary tillage was 2.72 m2/second (0.98 ha/hour) with average field efficiency was 77.40%, 80.72%, and 56.17% respectively.Total time to complete the first and second primary tillage was 0.11 hour and 0.10 hour, with diesel fuel consumption of 64.17 liters/ha, and 55.44 liters/ha. The secondary tillage required 0.06 hour and fuel consumption of 28.72 liters/ha.The primary and secondary tillage were found to influence the soil moisture content, bulk density, and rate of water infiltration. Tillage basic cost is calculated as Rp.1.765.683 /ha to result a hire charge of Rp. 1.942.251 /ha, and the tractor break-even point was found to be 552 ha/year.Keywords: Tractor, tillage

Abstract

ABSTRACT Information on agricultural machinery and equipment is required for the development of agricultural technology in Indonesia. Although Indonesia is known as an agricultural country, its agricultural technology is considered less developed compared to many other non-agricultural countries. One reason behind this is the dissemination of information regarding agricultural machinery and equipment still believed asunstructured and fragmented. Advancement in information and communication technology has made easiness for people in accessing information. Android operating system is gaining more and more popularity and its userin Indonesia is growingfast. This research aims to develop an Android based practical learning application on agricultural machinery and equipment. This research was carried out during the month of April 2015 to June 2015 and the resulted application was successfully installed in Android as a 1.8 Mb APK file format. The application was tested on CPU emulator and Andromax smartphone followed by a survey to 16 respondents using questionnaire having 10 questions in it (5 questions for application and 5 other questions for content of application). The respondents, who marked each question with 1=very disagree; 2=disagree; 3=neutral; 4=agree; 5=very agree, consist of 10 university students, 3 university lecturers, 1 representing farmer, 1 consultant in agricultural machinery and equipment, and 1 representingcommon people. Results of the test conclude that this Android application can be implemented as information media to improve awareness of public and university students regarding agricultural machinery and equipment in a quicker and a more efficient way. The application can also help disseminating information regarding agricultural machinery and equipment in a more variety way in order to support the development of agricultural technology in Indonesia.
