Abstract

This article discusses various efforts to create a healthy landscape for the sake of environmental balance. The colonial government-initiated nature preservation with tropical plant studies starting in 1817. Initiated by a government policy reform in 1816, this led to the establishment of the Bogor Botanical Garden on May 18, 1817, the Cibodas Botanical Garden on April 11, 1852, the Purwodadi Botanical Garden on January 30, 1941, and finally, the Eka Karya Botanical Garden on July 15, 1959. Over time, botanical gardens evolved into centers for plant research and conservation with increasingly widespread utilization. Through historical research utilizing contemporary sources, three important conclusions are drawn. First, caring for and creating a healthy landscape reflects an early awareness of environmental conservation in Indonesia that began in 1816. Second, by endeavoring to maintain and create a healthy landscape, the government played a role as an institution in establishing long-term ecosystem balance. Third, through the development of a healthy landscape, various national interests are more easily realized, particularly in supporting the nation’s economic development.

Abstract

This paper discusses the lives of Indonesian women within the confines of family and community amidst the strengthening of programs pertaining to women’s empowerment that were launched by the New Order administration from 1966 to 1998. The significant questions this research addresses are: 1) How was the empowerment programs conducted? and 2) How did the programs affect the lives of women within their families and communities. The results of this study showed that during the New Order administration, it became apparent that women lost their autonomy as burdens were stacked on them within their families and communities. Through empowerment programs, women were expected to be robust and independent; however, because the New Order programs were structurally designed to be heavily centralized, they instead reinforced the existing traditional social construction. As the women subsequently bore heavy burdens to thrive accomplishment in both familial and communal spheres, the introduced programs worked instead to repressively narrow women’s chances for autonomy. This historical research study utilized a variety of data in the forms of documents, both archival or memoir types.

Abstract

This study focuses on the strengthening of identity and solidarity among the Indo community through the establishment of the Indo Europeesch Verbond (IEV) during the period of Indonesia's national movement. The aim of this study is to analyze the movements of the IEV in voicing the aspirations of the minority Indo group. Social segregation, both imposed by the Dutch colonial government and practiced socially, also led to an identity crisis for the population of the Dutch East Indies, which consisted of various ethnicities and races. The identity crisis also affected the Indo community, as descendants of mixed European and Dutch East Indies heritage. The identity concept developed by the Indo group was to act as an intermediary between Western and Eastern cultures. Using historical methodology, this study outlines the background of the formation of the IEV and the programs organized to assert the existence of the Indo group. The formation of identity began with collective awareness and the shared sense of discrimination, which then manifested in the desire to form associations and organizations. The research findings show that the IEV implemented various welfare programs to build solidarity, such as education and scholarships, colonization (transmigration), and the movements of Indo women and youth. In addition to welfare programs, political pathways were also pursued, notably through representatives in the Volksraad. This study demonstrates that an organization plays a significant role in the formation of identity and solidarity within the Indo community, which had its own unique characteristics in the context of Indonesia's national movement.
