Blog or slide? Using Appropriate Media to Enhance the Students’ Ability in Writing an English Research Proposal based on Their Reasoning Level Yusti Arini

Abstract

This experimental research is aiming at finding out which media is more appropriate to enhance the students’ ability in writing an English-language qualitative research proposal, Blog or Slide? This is also to find out whether students’ reasoning level influences their writing ability and whether there is any interaction between teaching media and reasoning level. This experimental research was conducted on the students of English Language Education of IAIN Surakarta based on the pre-test post-test control group design. The experimental group consisted of 25 students and control group consisted of 29 students. Two-stage sampling technique, purposive sampling and then cluster sampling, was used to choose the subjects. To analyze the data, the researcher used Two-Way ANOVA technique. The research results show that using Blog media is more effective to enhance the students’ ability in writing an English research proposal compared to using Slide. The students’ reasoning level also influences their writing ability. Furthermore, there is an interaction between teaching media and reasoning level towards students’ ability in writing an English-language research proposal. The students’ with high reasoning level taught by using Blog have higher writing ability compared to those with high reasoning level taught by using Slide. Moreover, the students with low reasoning level taught by using Blog also have higher writing ability compared to those with low reasoning level taught by using Slide.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan membuat software media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan PAI yang diberi nama SMILapp. SMILapp berisi beberapa kisah Rasulullah Muhammad SAW dalam dua bahasa, yaitu Indonesia dan Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mendeskripsikan tingkat keberterimaan SMILapp oleh pengguna dan (2) mendeskripsikan kekurangan dan kelebihan yang dimiliki oleh SMILapp menurut pengguna.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out whether the use of Kahoot! application can increase the students’ critical reading ability, learning autonomy, and their learning participation in Critical Reading learning process. This research was conducted at the English Education Program Study of IAIN Surakarta involving 36 students as the research subjects. This classroom action research consisted of 2 cycles; 5 meetings for each cycle, with 1 pre-test and 2 post-tests. Based on the research results, it can be found out that the mean of pre-test scores is 25.56, the mean of post-test 1 is 44.39, and the mean of post-test 2 is 66.17; it means that the use of Kahoot! application can increase the students’ critical reading ability. The results of the questionnaire consisting of 9 indicators show that the use of Kahoot! application can increase the students’ learning autonomy. Furthermore, results from observation also show that the students’ learning participation increased during the learning process when Kahoot! application was applied. The students also assumed that the use of Kahoot! application can increase their learning participation.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Berbasis Permainan (GBL) telah diakui sebagai alat penting untuk memotivasi siswa agar terlibat dalam pembelajaran aktif dan konstruktif. Meskipun ada hubungan antara GBL dan hasil pembelajaran, bukti penelitian saat ini cenderung melemahkan hubungan antar konsep dan terlalu menyederhanakan pengalaman aliran dalam konteks GBL. Bukti penelitian saat ini memperkuat semakin meningkatnya hubungan antara konsep aliran dan pengalaman dalam konteks GBL. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pembelajaran berbasis permainan mengenai Teori Aliran yang digunakan guru dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMP Islam Al-Fath Plantungan. Metodologi kualitatif deskriptif dan pendekatan kualitatif digunakan dalam penyelidikan ini. Dua orang guru dan 20 orang siswa yang dipilih oleh peneliti berperan sebagai informan penelitian. Metode wawancara dan observasi digunakan sebagai strategi pengumpulan data. Analisis data menggunakan teori Miles & Huberman, untuk keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan pembelajaran berbasis permainan mengenai Teori Aliran dapat memudahkan guru dalam menyampaikan informasi dan juga dapat memudahkan siswa dalam menerima informasi. Temuan penelitian ini mencakup penggunaan pembelajaran berbasis permainan oleh Guru seperti duolingo, quizziz, kahoot dan lain-lain untuk mengajar pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas digital.

Abstract

Phenomena about children with disabilities in Salatiga still show that there are some problems related to the quality aspect of their lives. This study aims to examine parenting patterns, social attitudes, and role of the Social Service in improving the quality of life for children with disabilities. This research is a mixed-methods research using congruent design. The research subjects consisted of 66 parents of children with disabilities selected using the purposive sampling technique and 87 residents of Salatiga City selected using cluster sampling technique. Data was collected through interviews, surveys, and documentation, then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that parents with disabled children have a democratic parenting style, the social attitude of Salatiga City residents is good, full of empathy, and full of support; however, the Social Service Office does not yet have programs directly intended for children with disabilities in Salatiga. Research novelty is reflected by the variables and research method, which are different from previous studies.

Abstract

Seiring meningkatnya interaksi global, kemampuan berbicara di depan umum perlu didukung oleh penguasaan bahasa Inggris sebagai kompetensi penting bagi individu dan organisasi dalam memfasilitasi komunikasi lintas negara serta memperluas akses terhadap informasi, pengetahuan, dan peluang kerja sama. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pendampingan penguatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris bagi pengurus dan anggota Gabungan Organisasi Wanita kota Salatiga. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 48 peserta yang berasal dari berbagai organisasi wanita. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan partisipatif yang melibatkan peserta secara aktif pada tahap persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi kegiatan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan kontribusi positif terhadap peningkatan kemampuan dan kepercayaan diri peserta dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris, khususnya untuk kebutuhan fungsional dalam interaksi penyambutan tamu asing dan presentasi organisasi. Pihak Gabungan Organisasi Wanita mengharapkan adanya kegiatan lanjutan sebagai tindak lanjut dari program ini karena manfaat yang dirasakan bagi pengembangan kapasitas organisasi.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of strengthening multimodal literacy and self-talk in learning research methodology as well as the interaction effect of these two variables. This research is a pre-test and post-test control group experimental design with a 2 x 2 factorial design. The research subjects were selected using the Cluster Random Sampling technique; one experimental group with 31 students given a multimodal learning approach and one control group with 33 students given a monomodal learning approach. Data in this study were collected using achievement tests and self-talk questionnaire. The experimental group received nine sessions of treatment involving multimodal literacy and self-talk reinforcement. For the control group, treatment was also given 9 times using monomodal media and without self-talk reinforcement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk test and Levene test for pre-requisite test, and Two-Way ANOVA for hypothesis testing. The results show that there is no significant influence of the learning approach or self-talk reinforcement on research methodology competence; however, there was an interaction effect between the two variables. Thus, it is important to conduct research methodology learning that combines a multimodal learning approach using various techniques and media with self-talk reinforcement.
