Abstract

Discussing about gambling practiced in western culture has always been a controversial phenomenon for there are abundant of both positive and negative effects. This phenomenon is portrayed in one of Shirley Jackson’s works which is interesting to notice that she who is known for her mysticism in most of her works put lottery gambling tradition into her iconic short story entitled “The Lottery”. However, although Jackson’s idea about performing lottery is quite different from American society in general, she tries to depict the value of lottery itself as one of the preserved traditions in the United States. The great development of lottery gambling in America assuredly contributes to the growth of this gambling around the world. It does not only give impacts on the life of American people, but also on the life of people of other countries, especially Indonesia.

Abstract

The 9/11 tragedy in America has created more intense tension between America and Middle Eastern cultures. Then, the term Islamophobia emerged, where many non-Muslims feared Islam. Even until now, they associate Islam with terrorism. However, this situation led Willow, the main character, to decide to study and convert to Islam. Although not the main point that caused Willow to convert to Islam, the decision was made after the 9/11 tragedy. Willow represents a western woman who intentionally learns Islamic teachings. This study will use a qualitative descriptive method to explore events and cultures surrounding the main character. Therefore, there are two purposes of this study. The first is to delve into how the culture of Middle Eastern Muslim women is portrayed. Secondly, is to examine how the main character adapts to the culture of Middle Eastern Muslim women. In analyzing the data, this study applies postcolonial feminism theory to understand the cultural differences between Middle Eastern and Western Muslims, particularly regarding women. This study shows that the main character faces cultural challenges different from her origin country in carrying out religious practices, especially Islam. Nonetheless, the main character can adapt to the values of both cultures.

Abstract

Abstract: The idea of poverty as the theme has been recurrently used in literature. However, it is rarely come across in Modernist Literature. Accordingly, this study examines poverty as the theme, which is also the main issue in a poem written by T.S. Eliot entitled Morning at the Window. To dive deep into the main issue of the poem, it uses a close-reading method. It focuses on how the text of the poem represents the main issue in which the poem tries to convey. To come into the results of the study, three aspects from Semiotics of Poetry by Michael Riffaterre are used, which are unsustainable expressions, heuristic and hermeneutic reading, and matrix. Analyzing these three aspects, the results show that the representation of poverty as the main issue is evidently stated. The diction in the poem successfully creates the images and set the tone that correlates with poverty.

Abstract

Expressing feelings or emotions is as important as meaning in speaker’s utterances. It is more interesting when the speaker is a Tourette syndrome sufferer. This study aims to examine how Expressive speech acts are used by the main character, Brad Cohen, in Front of the Class movie suffering from Tourette syndrome to communicate with other people around him. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were taken from the utterances of the main character that further were classified into six Expressive speech acts proposed by Searle. The results of this study show two conditions which are either how relaxing or how stressful the main character interacts with other people. The Expressive speech acts that Brad uses to express his relaxing feeling are ‘thank’, ‘congratulate’, and ‘welcome’. On the other hand, the Expressive verbs that Brad uses because he feels upset or stressful are ‘thank’ ‘apologize’, ‘condole’, and ‘deplore’. Moreover, one Expressive verb that seems to fit into both situations is ‘thank’. In this case, it depends on the situation although eventually its purpose is the same which is expressing gratitude.

Abstract

The trend of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic has driven English Literature lecturers to come up with effective ways of teaching literature. Concerning this issue, this research aims to analyze how literature, especially popular literature, is taught online. Focusing on the socio-cultural pedagogic principles, the approach of teaching popular literature is examined using a qualitative descriptive approach. This study was conducted at English Literature Department, Adab and Humanity Faculty, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, involving two popular literature lecturers. The data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation and analyzed using the interactive analysis method. It was found that the socio-cultural pedagogic principles were applied partially. (1) the principle of engagement was applied by warming-up questions, mind-mapping technique, mentioning adjectives, and watching movie trailers, (2) the principle of intelligibility was not applied because the lecturers explained the theory of genre and sub-genre characteristics before giving examples, and (3) the principle of participation was applied by delivering quizzes through various online platforms, like Google Classroom, Mentimeter, and Kahoot! and giving tasks which were uploaded in UIN Sunan Ampel’s e-learning system, SAILS ‘Sunan Ampel Integrated Learning Service’. The significance of these findings will contribute to the teaching and learning process of popular literature. Besides, the results will provide insight for popular literature lecturers to apply a better teaching approach.

Abstract

Hysteria or female madness occurs mostly in women. It happens because according to research the health condition of women is worse than men, significantly related to a mental condition. Women are more likely to have unexpressed desires that lead to stress and develop depression when faced with the reality that does not match their expectations. To understand more about hysteria, this study attempts to examine the symptoms of hysterical behaviors that occur on the female character, Mrs. Keeney, in a play entitled “Ile” written by Eugene O’Neill. This is qualitative research in which the data were in the form of dialogues between the characters, especially related to Mrs. Keeney. The results of this study show that the symptoms of hysterical behaviors gradually appear, from mild to severe symptoms. In addition, they occur mostly because the female character is unable to face the harsh reality that is incompatible with her expectation, and thus she prefers to escape from it.

Abstract

William Faulkner`s A Rose for Emily is narrated in a complex narrative structure, thus, making it difficult to follow the story`s chronology despite its relatively short form. This article provides a different approach using Propp`s narratology to show that the story can be read as a modern fairy tale but with some twisted elements. The analysis focuses on the sequence of events based on Propp`s 31 narrative functions. The analysis also highlights the characters performing the functions following Propp`s seven types of dramatis personae. The findings reveal that the events in A Rose for Emily conform to some of the narrative functions of a fairy tale. The initial situation introduces Emily as the heroine of the story, followed by her father's death, which represents the absentation function. In the middle of the narrative, the villainy function serves as the complication of the story. The story`s end is also similar to a fairy tale by the wedding function. However, these fairy tale elements are presented in twisted ways. Emily was introduced only when she died, and she poisoned Homer to be able to live with him ever after. Meanwhile, Emily and Homer also provide twists as the story's heroine and villain.

Abstract

In Indonesia, covering songs with an Islamic theme has become a trend that is gaining more and more popularity. Several content creators have recently covered non-religious songs by changing the lyrics to ones loaded with Islamic teachings. As the cover songs are uploaded on YouTube, inevitably, there are versions of cover music videos in which some elements of the original music videos are euphemized to fulfill the purpose of religious wisdom. This study not only attempts to examine the visual elements euphemized in the cover music videos but also the visual euphemization strategies employed by the content creators. The data were gathered from YouTube in the form of twelve original music videos and their covers. Furthermore, a localization approach, the theory of euphemism, and para-adaptation were employed to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that four visual elements were euphemized in these cover songs: the properties, costumes, locations, and interactions among the singers or models. Delving deeper into this, the researchers proposed four visual euphemization strategies, including peripheralization (euphemization of the properties), vestimentarization (euphemization of the costumes), locationalization (euphemization of the locations), and interactionalization (euphemization of the interactions). These findings interestingly highlight that there is a common visual euphemization strategy used by content creators when covering music videos of non-religious songs into Islamic songs. Thus, the findings suggest that content creators may apply the four proposed strategies to create acceptable cover music videos to spread Islamic teachings.
