Abstract

This study aims to provide explanation on the fransfer of modalization in restructuring interpersonal clauses.As a case study, it has been deliberately directed to analyze written clauses in English texts and theircounterparts in Indonesian. Four major procedures were taken to manage the data withdrawn from thetexts, i.e. (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) data analysis, dan (4) inferencing. Based on theprocedures, it was found that in order to achieve functional equivalence, interpersonal clauses weretranslated by means of restructuring processes. The grammar of proposition has been restructured in threemajor modes, i.e. (1) the translation of polarity which includes affirmative, polar interrogative, whinterrogative,and exclamative restructuring , (2) the restructuring of probability which includes the transfer ofModal adjunct, Mood adjunct, and Grammatical metaphor, (3) the transfer of usuality which was restructuredaccording its different degrees.

Abstract

Translation has exposed a number of problems related to the linguistic domain. Suchproblems may stem from socio-cultural differences between the source language and thetarget language. They may also stem from the differences of the grammatical featuresbetween the two languages. Therefore, such problems have influenced the effort of achievingcorrespondence as well as equivalence; one of such problems is the existence of formalnonequivalence. This research aims to solve the problems of (1) how such formalnonequivalence appears in the translation of behavioral clauses and (2) how to achievefunctional equivalence through the presence of formal nonequivalence. This study wasdirected to deliberately analyze a written text in English and its translation in Indonesian. Itwas found out that formal nonequivalence may occur in word, phrase, and clause levels.Such formal nonequivalence has, however, facilitated the effort of achieveing functionalequivalence at clause level. In order to materialize functional equivalence at the clause level,the translation has been done by means of maintaining behavioral clauses or restructuringthem to form material clauses, mental clauses, or verbal clauses.

Abstract

The advancement of science and technology (scien-tech) is always accompanied by creation of novel terminologies. The more a language is used as a means of conveying information on new findings the more the language is enriched with new meaning, be it represented in a form of borrowing, new invention, blend, coinage, or common words with new meaning. This has necessitated scien-tech stakeholders to face the challenge of whether to borrow through transliteration or to adopt as well as adapt such terminologies for the benefit of utilizing information to flow effectively. A problem that appears is how to provide counterparts of such terminologies considering that the supply of scien-tech terminologies in Bahasa is relatively limited compared to that in English while borrowing can be inappropriate or even misleading. This paper intends to explain a number of ways in which endeavors to provide tentative supplies of terminologies through domestication strategy have always been made for scien-tech adoption as well as adaptation to proceed appropriately while enhancing the role of Bahasa in maintaining its function to deal with scien-tech undertaking.

Abstract

This study analyzes code switching used in conversations by an American student of the darmasiswa program, addressing four objectives to find out the types and the functions of code switching, the possible factors that cause the occurence of code switching, and the impacts of code switching to the abilities of involved languages.The approach of this study is qualitative. The researcher applies mixed techniques to obtain data; recording the conversations in natural setting and interview. The analysis is interpretive.The findings of this study indicate that three types of code switching found in the conversations; intersentential code switching, intrasentential code switching, and tag/emblematic switching. They are used for various functions due to several reasons. The most significant function is to emphasize the message which gets the highest percentage (27.6%) and intention to clarify the speech content to the other interlocutors is the most significant factor causing code switching whichgets highest percentage (40.8%).It is found that code switching gives impact to the abilities of involved languages in conversations. It results in the loss of English language ability and the gain of Indonesian language ability.

Abstract

Academic literacy has long been discussed throughout the scientific disciplines. Such discussions have partly resulted in a sort of awareness in people’s mind concerning how we implement it in the areas of scientific disciplines we deal with. In the translation domain, we question how much the significance of such stuff is for the benefit of comprehensively analyzing text for inter-language rendering. This paper intends to provide an answer to such question. It deals with the use of relevant literacy to analyze any source text as a basis to produce a target text through transfer of meaning and reconstruction of language fulfilling the aspects of readability, accuracy, and naturalness.

Abstract

Verbal politeness can be considered from the perspectives of linguistic features, participants’ socio-cultural background and their membership within a speech community. It can also be viewed from the ways to which it applies in interpersonal utterances, be they source or target ones. It may also be taken into account from its users’ perception as well their maintenance in real communication. This paper aimed to explore (1) the degree of the verbal politeness contained in English interpersonal utterances, (2) the correlation of politeness degrees between the English utterances as the source texts and their back-translations, (3) the speakers’ perception of the politeness degrees contained in the two sets of utterances, and (4) the ways of maintaining them. The object of this study was verbal (im)-politeness contained in English interpersonal utterances which were back-rendered from translated texts in Indonesian. In order to elicit the type of utterances from the subject of this study, the Indonesian utterances were exposed to them to be translated back to English. Comparing the source texts with results of their back-rendering, this study was capable of fulfilling the outlined objectives. The results of this study show that (1) the politeness degrees of interpersonal utterances in the source language were generally equivalent to their counterparts in the target language; (2) there was a positive correlation between the English utterances and their back-translations; (3) the politeness degrees of the utterances in both the source texts and their back-translations were perceived to be relatively polite; (4) the politeness degrees of interpersonal utterances in the target language have been maintained by using grammatical features and rhetoric which were more formal than those available in the source texts.

Abstract

This study was an experimental research aimed at examining the effectiveness of Know-Want-Learned and Collaborative Strategic Reading strategies to teach reading comprehension to the eleventh grade students with positive and negative attitudes in SMAN 2 Mranggen, Demak. I used closed-ended questionnaire, observation checklist, and interview to categorize the students’ attitudes into positive and negative. Meanwhile, I used reading comprehension test to test the students’ ability in reading comprehension. The study revealed five results. First, KWL was more effective to students with positive attitudes. Second, CSR was more effective to students with positive attitudes. Third, none was more effective between KWL and CSR strategies to students with positive attitude. Fourth, CSR was more effective than KWL to students with negative attitudes. The last, there was no significant interaction between the strategies and attitudes to teach reading comprehension. However, it could be said that the significance was low. In conclusion, this study has proven that KWL and CSR could help the students in reading comprehension for both students with positive and negative attitudes.

Abstract

Any student goes to the classroom with his/her own cultural identity. In other words, Every student comes to the classroom with a set of characteristics and behaviors that make him or her unique and that will affect his or her academic achievements in the future. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of cultural identities in second language acquisition (a perspective from secondary school) at SEMARANG MULTINATIONAL SCHOOL, Indonesia. Which known as an International Institution that presented International educational standers. This article covers a descriptive qualitative approach which used different methods to collect the data, they were (focus groups discussion for six students and conducting interviews with three of their teachers). The findings of this study revealed three main results. Firstly, there were several steps to enhance the second language learners and still there are some factors that affect Indonesian students entirely adaption for English as a second language which are: the fluency constraints and the fear that they still not qualified when it comes to communicate by using modern English language, also the grammar structure while doing common conversations. Secondly, the findings obviously showed the positive influence of cultural identities on the process of second language acquisition and students' academic achievements in the future. Thirdly, it was briefly revealed that to adapt English as a second language it is needed to exceed the negative intrinsic and extrinsic factors while taking place the positive factors, in general the negative factors which arose in the results somehow mislead them to achieve the completely adaption. Some pedagogical suggestions from the writer were recommended to students, teachers and institutions: For students to be more brave, open-minded and outgoing (no shyness in education). The necessity of teachers' conversant for culture diverse during learning context and finally, The Ministry of Indonesian Education has the choice to improve English language interest by involving it in all schools not only the International, but also in national institutions to be language of education.

Abstract

Writing as the productive skill is considered to be more difficult than any other productive skill. Students face difficulties and commit errors in many different writing skills, especially in mechanics (punctuation, capitalization, and spelling).The study examined the errors of writing skill that face first year English college students of Al-Merghib University in related to the three mechanics. There were thirty participants of different genders in the study. They were thirteen males and seventeen females who studies in the first year of English college in Al-Meghib University. To achieve the objectives of the study, qualitative design was employed. The data was collected using two methods: 1) questionnaire to check the participants' knowledge about the punctuation, capitalization, and spelling usage and 2) a test to analyze these errors in the respondents' written language. To analyze the data, simple statistics description was used. The result of the study found that capitalization error was the most committed one, followed by the punctuation error, and spelling error was the least error committed by the first year English college students. It was concluded that most of the respondents committed some errors because of their lack of knowledge, lack of balance in the curriculum and the influence of mother tongue. Writing classes must engage students with more practices than ask them to deliver lectures. Also, this study provides some helpful suggestions to avoid the identified errors. The study can be used as an insight to the next other researchers and as a reference for similar topics about writing skills. Teachers must pay deep attention to the use of all the punctuation marks, explain the conventions of capitalization, and clarify more about the spelling rules. Students should be encouraged to do home written assignments as much as possible.

Abstract

Politeness plays an essential role in communication. Politeness is presumably realized differently in textbooks written by native speakers and in textbooks written by non native speakers as they come from different cultural background.This study aims at investigating the difference of politeness realization in a textbook written by native speakers and a textbook by non native speakers.The subjects of the study were New Headway Intermediate Student’s Book and BahasaInggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X. Apart from the data taken from the textbooks, interview to two teachers who used the both textbooks were also conducted. The functional texts and model conversations displayed in the textbooks were analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies and Leech’s (1983) politeness principles.The findings reveal that the both textbooks employ all politeness strategies with equal percentages. In Headway, positive politeness is realized for 68%, bald-on record 24%, negative politeness 7%, and off record 2%. In BahasaInggris, positive politeness is realized for 71%, bald-on record 14%, negative politeness 11%, and off record 3%. Positive politeness are dominant in the both textbooks. Besides, the teachersreport they usually teach students explicitly and implicitly about the difference of politeness form one culture to another.
