Abstract

Smart city implementation, such as smart energy and utilities, smart mobility & transportation, smart environment, and smart living in urban areas is expanding rapidly worldwide. However, one of the biggest challenges that need to be solved is the selection of the appropriate internet of things (IoT) connectivity technologies. This research will seek for the best candidate low power wide area network (LPWAN) technologies such as long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN), narrow-band internet of things (NB-IoT), and random phase multiple access (RPMA) for IoT smart city deployment in Bandung city is based on IoT network connectivity between with six technical evaluation criteria: gateway requirements, traffic/data projection, the best signal level area distribution, and overlapping zones. Bass model is carried out to determine the capacity forecast. While in coverage prediction, LoRaWAN and NB-IoT use the Okumura-Hata propagation, and Erceg-Greenstein (SUI) model is used for RPMA. Based on the simulation and performance evaluation results, RPMA outperforms LoRaWAN and NB-IoT. It required the least gateway number to cover Bandung city with the best signal levels and overlapping zones.

This study aims to describe the competitive advantage of the telecommunications provider and explore how to create a superior competitive advantage in the turbulent business environment. The study involved many leaders of business units of telecommunications operators in Indonesia as research respondents. The research uses descriptive survey and explanatory survey using Partial Least Square-Path Modeling (PLS-PM). From the descriptive analysis, it is found that the competitive advantage of telecommunications operators in Indonesia belongs to the excellent category, and was built more through product cost-efficiency, especially higher efficiency in producing products or services. However, the results of the study show that market responsiveness turned out to have a more dominant contribution in creating a superior competitive advantage in a turbulent business environment. Thus, the competitive advantage is still not optimal. To solve this problem, the telecommunications provider in Indonesia needs to increase the ability to quickly enter new markets and produce products or services at a lower cost.

Abstract

Abstract Telecommunication technology that is widely used to communicate in the internet era today is Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. In carrying out LTE services, the link is needed between the access network and the core or commonly known as backhaul. One of the backhaul widely used to connect a communication link is a microwave backhaul. The application of a microwave link uses extensively for the line of sight (LOS) communication. Therefore, this microwave link planning is not easy because there will be many factors that influenced the communication link, include barriers, fading, attenuation, noise, and distance. In this research, microwave link planning will be carried out between the Semarang City and the Magelang City using three scenarios. The first scenario conducted by using single-hop or direct communication, the second scenario using an active repeater, then the third scenario using the passive repeater. The last result shows that the most suitable scene to be applied in the Semarang-Magelang microwave link is the second scenario. Using active repeater, which reflecting and amplifying the Tx site signal towards the Rx site, is considered to be a solution for the link trajectory, which contained high obstacle and great distance. Using the second scenario from this research, showing that the signal power at Semarang and Magelang site is -54,67 dBm and -48,66 dBm. These signals are above both of Rx threshold site, that is -67,50 dBm.

Abstract

One of the challenges often met by planners of the telecommunications network using microwave radio is surface conditions, especially when passing through the ocean. Propagation conditions above sea surface often result in increasing fading, which significantly affects the reliability of the microwave network. On the other hand, considering that Indonesia is an archipelago, ocean topography is unavoidable, and the use of microwave networks generally considered to be the most efficient among other technologies, especially in Eastern Indonesia. This research aims to respond to such a challenge by planning a microwave communication network using a space diversity technique. The type of microwave network used is a point to point, which links Bali and Lombok islands. The results showed that the use of space diversity techniques could increase fading margins from 34.42 dB to 35.15 dB and availability value from 99.99667% to 99.99873%. Therefore, this technique recommends implementing by telecommunications network providers in accelerating the deployment of connecting networks in areas that have ocean topography.

Abstract

The need for LPWA-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology for deploying smart metering services is rapidly growing for its ability to manage energy usage in real-time and increase efficiency. However, the problem faced by electric utility companies is how to choose the most appropriate technology. This study uses a techno-economic approach to compare the two most widely used technological alternatives, namely establishing LoRaWAN as a non-licensed LPWA technology or leasing NB-IoT as a licensed LPWA technology owned by a telecommunications operator. Case studies conducted in the urban area of Bandung and sub-urban city of Tasikmalaya as an example of a typical town in Indonesia. The results showed that LoRaWAN and NB-IoT are both technically and business feasible to be implemented with their respective advantages. LoRaWAN is superior in battery lifetime, business model, speed of implementation, and total costs, whereas NB-IoT is superior in range, capacity, quality of service, security, and ecosystem support. Using PLN's perspective as a national electricity company in Indonesia, LoRaWAN has a Net Present Value of 23% higher than NB-IoT in the 10th year.
