Abstract

ABSTRAK Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini merupakan salah satu bagian dari Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang harus dilaksanakan oleh civitas akademika, khususnya para Dosen Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Khairun. Dalam pengabdian ini selain melibatkan Dosen Universitas Khairun, juga melibatkan mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris dan Himpunan Pelajar Mamuya IPMM. Adapun kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam pengabdian ini adalah Dialog Budaya dan diskusi sastra lisan, Pengenalan Program Studi Sastra Inggris dan Pentas Seni oleh Tim Unkhair dan Masyarakat Mamuya. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah membekali para mahasiswa sastra Inggris dalam berkegiatan sosial di masyarakat, disertai dengan keterampilan bahasa Inggris secara aktif dan komunikatif baik lisan maupun tulisan.  Hasil kegiatan yang dilakukan ini memberikan dampak positif bagi masyarakat di desa Mamuya dan civitas akademika Universitas Khairun, terbukti dengan bentuk antusias para pemuda-pemudi desa turut aktif berperan sejak hari kedatangan sampai dengan berakhirnya kegiatan, serta pihak desa meminta kepada tim Unkhair untuk memprogramkan kegiatan lanjutan, khususnya sastra lisan sebagai warisan budaya desa Mamuya, hal ini  sesuai dengan tujuan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat yakni bermanfaat bagi masyarakat. \ Kata Kunci : Budaya, Intelektual, Masyarakat, Pengabdian. Sastra Lisan.      ABSTRACT                Community Service is one part of Tridharma of the college required by academician, especially for the lecturers of the Cultural and Science Faculty, Khairun University. In this community service, besides involving  lecturers, it also involves students of  English Literature Study Program and the IPMM Mamuya Student Association. The activities carried out in this service are Cultural Dialogue and oral literature discussions, Introduction to the English Literature Study Program and Art Performances by the Unkhair Team and Society. The purpose of this activity is to equip English literature students of social activities in the community, be active and communicative in  English, both oral and written. The results of these activities had a positive impact to the community in Mamuya and the academic community of Khairun University, as evidenced by the enthusiastic of the activist taking an active role from the day of arrival until the end of the activity, as well as the host team asked  to follow-up program activities, especially oral literature as a cultural heritage of Mamuya, this is in accordance with the purpose of Community Service which is to give benefit to the community. Keywords : Culture, Intellectual, Society, Community Service. Abstract

ABSTRACT. The aim of this research is (1) to describe how the Buginese maintain their language in the society of Ternate city, especially in BastiongTalangame village and also (2) to describe the factors contributing to the maintenance of Buginese Language in BastiongTalangame village.There are two data sources that the researcher uses; they are primary data and secondary data. In analyzing the data, researcher used qualitative descriptive methods. The data was analyzed with sociolinguistic theories which intend to make the researcher easier to understand and observe how language maintenance can survive in people’s everyday lives.The findings of this study indicate that this research is spoken by the people in the house, the surrounding environment, and also in public areas such as markets that can still survive. Buginese people use Buginese language when they communicate one another. However, they use Ternate Malay when communicating with people with other tribes. It can be concluded thatn the factors contributing to the Buginese Language maintenance include social and environmental factors where they are in a region of language concentration, namely in the BastiongTalangame Village, a language attitude factor that includes language user loyalty, pride in language and also awareness of norms that are still found in maintaining language And the last factor is a migration, where the Buginese community that comes and settles in the city of Ternate.

Abstract

The community service activities by Unkhair team in the form of English language skills training in Ternate communities aims to increase the enthusiasm of community members to learn English and improve English skills through effective, creative and fun learning, in this case through media games. The method used prioritizes courage in speaking without worrying about being wrong in pronunciation or expression in using English. The sample are around 40 participants by the community members in Ternate. Games are used as English communication media between mentor and participants. Finally, the result of this activity is the increase of English ability of the participants in using games, therefore the learning process is more effectice, creative, and fun.

Abstract

Language is dynamic, it evolved along with the development of human civilization . This is no exception in the Indonesian language is the national language and unifying the people of Indonesia . In the era of Information and Communication Technology (Information and Communication Technology) today, this language Indonesia experienced a rapid development. These developments triggered fundamental changes in the body besides Indonesian who had a positive impact also have negative impacts which is crucial in the process of preservation Indonesian existence in the future.

Abstract

Willingness to communicate (WTC) can be defined as the readiness of a language learner to enter communication situation. This study aims to identify factors affecting pre-service teachers’ WTC and to explore their perspective on the importance of WTC in relation to the study program. The study implemented both quantitative and qualitative method in order to gain deeper understanding from questionnaires and interview data. Questionnaires were used to explain interrelated relationship between variables affecting WTC among pre-service teachers. Interview data were used to report their perspective on the significance of WTC in relation to their study program.  The result inferred that pre-service teachers have relatively high WTC. Motivation variable  scale  indicated direct positive relation to pre-service teachers’ WTC while anxiety showed a negative relationship.  Language learning beliefs items were reported to be moderately agreed upon among pre-service teachers influencing their WTC. Interview result inferred that pre-service teachers mostly agreed upon the significance of enhancing WTC among learners. Implications for learning as a result from this study suggested that teachers and curriculum makers to improve teaching techniques and approaches in order to enhance learners’ WTC.

Abstract

Convensional Learning Model, such as lecturing method which makes teacher as the learning center without notice to the activeness and participation of students in the classroom still becomes teachers’ favourite style in teaching reading comprehension. Consequently, the learning process tends to be monotonous. This factor can answer the reason why the students’ achievement in reading skill at SMA 2 Ternate is not optimal. Then, this is suspected to be a factor in the occurrence of these problems. Therefore, the researcher applied TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) and combine it with authentic material in reading comprehension. This research is a quasi-experimental research with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest group design. The total population of this study were students of XI SMA Negeri 2 Ternate, who were class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. One of the XI classes was used as the experimental class and another one became the control class, then it analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. The selection of the class was based on the observation to see the similarity of students' abilities in these classes. The result showed that the TBLT method combined with the authentic material in the Reading Comprehension could increase: (1) the learning motivation of XI SMA 2 Ternate students; (2) increasing the student learning outcomes. It can be seen from the results of the Paired Sample t-test table that the significance = 0.000 is less than the significant level (α) = 0.05, then H0 is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there has been an increasing of learning outcomes in the experimental class from pre-test to post-test. Based on the result, the TBLT method can be recommended as a method used to increase English learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of the implementation of TOEFL Preparation in order to increase the students’ TOEFL test scores, then the scores can be used for academic purposes. The research conducted was an experimental study with a paired-sample t-test. Participants consisted of 20 selected students at Khairun University, namely through pretest, treatment (listening, structure, reading), and posttest. The research method used two types of instruments: pre-test, which used to measure the TOEFL test initial score, and post-test, which was used to measure the final score. The data collected from both the pre-test and post-test is then analyzed by using the paired-sample t-test in SPSS. The result showed that there were significant differences between students' scores in the pre-test and post-test in the three sections: Listening, Structure and written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. It also showed that the overall TOEFL preparation class students have increased scores. The part that has the biggest difference was the reading skill compared to the previous two sections. The students’ maximum score increased in the post-test in all three sections which means there was an increase of the score. The effectiveness of this program was strongly supported by the implemented learning model, namely PBL. The implementation of PBL in this program is very relevant because students are guided to identify the problems that usually arise in TOEFL questions and how to solve them.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an essential part of a language. In Indonesia, especially in Ternate, many students struggle to enrich their vocabulary on mastering English. Students find difficulties in learning English and strategies in learning vocabulary. Therefore, this study aims to investigates vocabulary strategies for English learners. The research purposes were: 1) to determine the students' strategies in learning vocabulary and 2) to determine the dominant strategies used by university students. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative design, and the subjects of the study were students of Khairun University, consisting of 59 students. The data of the study were collected through a questionnaire. The result found that students used all types of vocabulary learning strategies. However, they used the memory and cognitive learning strategy more often than other strategies. Additionally, using a dictionary, repeatedly spelling the word in mind, and consciously contacting the target language through various media were the dominant strategies used by the students.

Abstract

Community service activities in the form of training to improve English language skills for students at SDN 58 Ternate City. The aim of this service is to provide knowledge and self-development skills for students in Kastela Village, Ternate Island. This ability is expected to improve the foreign language skills of the younger generation and as a form of implementation of the tridharma of higher education to empower society. The target participants for this PKM activity are 30 grade 5 students at SDN 58 Ternate City. The method used in this service is game-based learning with an outdoor class system. The implementation of this community service activity will apply a translanguaging approach as a form of preserving local wisdom by empowering children's mother tongue, namely Ternate, as one of the learning languages. The results obtained from this service are increasing students' knowledge of English using games and instruments. The obstacle faced in this service activity is the students' limited English language skills so that most of the explanation of the activity steps is carried out in Indonesian.

Abstract

Literasi digital menjadi penting karena melimpahnya media dan informasi di dunia digital, literasi digital menjadi lebih dari sekedar kebutuhan. Selain tantangan, peluang besar juga ada di media digital. Hal ini mencakup memberdayakan individu untuk mengakses informasi, berkomunikasi secara efektif, mendapatkan pekerjaan, berpikir kritis, dan menavigasi lanskap digital secara bertanggung jawab. Baik seorang pelajar, profesional, atau sekadar seseorang yang ingin berkembang di era digital, berinvestasi dalam literasi digital adalah pilihan bijak. Kegiatan pengabdian ini berfokus pada sosialisasi literasi media sosial yang menunjukkan pertumbuhan penggunaan paling masif dalam 5 tahun terakhir. Mitra yang disasar adalah SMAN 2 Kota Ternate dengan partisipan guru dan siswa. Dengan melibatkan 35 siswa, kegiatan ini berhasil dilaksanakan dengan metode sosialisasi interaktif dengan aktivitas survei, permainan, hingga penyuluhan. Pada akhir kegiatan, peserta menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi dan ditutup dengan deklarasi anti bullying di media sosial. Ke depannya, diharapkan penyuluhan literasi digital dapat dilaksanakan dengan lebih terukur misalnya menggunakan metode pre-test dan post-test agar capaian berupa pemahaman peserta dapat dievaluasi dengan baik.
