Abstract

The research aims to examine the effect of tongue twisters on students' pronunciation. The method used in this research is quantitative and the research design used is quasi-experimental. The sample in this study was tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Ternate City for the 2022/2023 academic year. They are from classes X2 and X5, class X2 is the experimental class and X5 is the control class. Each group consists of 10 students. The experimental group was taught using the tongue twister technique while the control group was taught using recount text. The method of data collection was done by using a test that is pretest and posttest. As for data analysis, the authors used the ELSA and SPSS applications version 25 to find out the results of the pretest and posttest. Based on calculations, the average pre-test score of the experimental class was 80 while the average post-test score of the control class was 64. The study’s results explained that the use of the tongue twister technique affected students' pronunciation abilities. This can be seen from the results of the independent samples test where students who were taught the tongue twister technique (experimental group) scored 0.000 where the hypothesis was that if the test result was lower than 0.05 then Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. The test results show that the alternative hypothesis is accepted because the test value is 0.000 which is smaller than the significant value of 0.05. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that this technique can affect students' pronunciation. This shows that the use of tongue twisters is effective to be taught to students to improve students’ pronunciation skills.

The number of research samples were 20 students of class VIII H selected through simple random sampling technique. The instrument used in this study were pre-test and post-test to collect data. The researcher analyzed the students’ writing on the pre-test, the first cycle test and the second cycle test. To evaluate students’ results in writing recount text, the researcher used a writing rubric The results showed that the average score of the students on the first test was 53 and the average score on the second cycle test was 73.75, the results of the t-test (12) exceeded the t-value (1.729) at a significant level of 0.05 and degrees of freedom (19) using one tiled test. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It was concluded that there were differences between students who wrote recount text during the pre-test, and after applying the genre-based approach during the post- test.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the challenges encountered by students in class A, semester 3 of the English Education Study Program at Khairun University when speaking English, as well as the reasons behind these difficulties. The study involved 36 students as its subjects and utilized qualitative research methods, with data being collected through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire used was adapted from Gustina (2021), and six factors of difficulty were discussed, namely linguistic obstacles, speech processing, academic and conversational English skills, negative effects, access to speaking opportunities, and fluency. The findings of this study indicate that students struggle with speaking English due to challenges such as insufficient vocabulary, poor grasp of grammar, lack of confidence, and motivation. The primary factor contributing to the difficulty in speaking English is the linguistic barrier.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify errors in the usage of the simple past Tense in the written work of second-semester Class A students in the English education program at Khairun University. The study included 27 students as subjects, and data was collected through written tests and interviews. The researcher utilized Dulay's Theory to categorize the types of errors, finding three main types: omission, addition, and misformation. The frequency of errors was as follows: omission (2.5%), addition (0.75%), and misformation (67.5%). Misformation emerged as the most prevalent error type. Based on interview results, the most common causes of simple past tense errors were students' need for understanding of grammar and simple past tense formulas, as well as a limited vocabulary leading to difficulty in constructing sentences. Additionally, students needed help with the placement of past tense verbs in sentences. These errors were further made worse by inadequate study time, overreliance on in-class learning, and less allocated self-study time at home.
