Abstract

Working poverty remains a persistent issue in Indonesia. The high prevalence of working poor underscores the urgent need for effective poverty alleviation efforts. This study analyzes the relationship between side hustles, excessive working hours, and working poverty in Indonesia. Utilizing microdata from the March 2023 Susenas and applying binary logistic regression, the study assesses the effect of side hustle status and excessive working hours on the likelihood of being categorized as working poor, based on the international working poverty line. The results indicate that engaging in a side hustle without excessive hours actually increases the risk of working poverty, while side hustles with excessive working hours reduce that risk. These findings suggest that side hustles are only effective in alleviating poverty when performed with excessive hours, a condition that may further exacerbate worker vulnerability. This study implies the need for policies focused on improving job quality, regulating working hours, and providing social protection for individuals engaged in side hustles.

Abstract

The gender gap in participation as digital workers has persisted in recent years, even as the sector undergoes rapid growth and emerges as a major economic opportunity. This disparity is a critical concern, as women, who are often positioned within structurally disadvantaged groups, face a heightened risk of exclusion amid the ongoing digital transformation. This study analyzes opportunities to become digital workers, both in the formal and informal sectors, using microdata from the August 2023 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas). An official statistics approach is applied through decent work indicators, and a multinomial logistic regression model is employed to examine gender-based disparities. The results indicate that women have significantly lower chances than men of being employed as digital worker, whether formal or informal. These findings underscore the need for affirmative policy interventions to improve women’s access to digital skills training, flexible work arrangements, and social protection within the digital economy.

Abstract

Abstract

Strengthening the tourism sector's contribution to the economy remains a challenge in promoting inclusive and sustainable growth. Moreover, in situations of economic slowdown and uncertainty, tourism as a non-primary commodity tends to be deprioritized by the public in favor of basic needs. This study aims to (1) analyze the demand side of the tourism sector through an analysis of tourists' willingness to pay in Central Java Province; and (2) analyze the supply side through reviews of destinations and supporting facilities in the Pesona Semarsaga area. The methods used are Tobit regression based on microdata from the March 2024 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), and sentiment analysis of tourist reviews from Google Review big data. The results indicate that characteristics such as traveler type, gender, generation, regional classification, education, financial inclusion, and employment status significantly influence willingness to pay (WTP). Furthermore, sentiment toward tourist attractions tends to be positive, but positive sentiment toward supporting facilities remains below average. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of microeconomic analysis from national data with online review big data to understand the balance between regional tourism demand and supply. The implication is that these findings reinforce the consumer behavior model in the tourism economy and provide practical guidance for improving facilities and managing sustainable destinations.
