Abstract

Transitioning into entrepreneurship can offer a viable path for former blue-collar workers to reenter the workforce following widespread job losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigates the critical roles of adaptability and resilience in facilitating this transition, with particular attention to how migration status influences success in becoming either formal or informal entrepreneurs. Utilizing detailed microdata from the August 2021 Labor Force Survey (Survei Angkatan Kerja Nasional - SAKERNAS), the study applies a multinomial logistic regression model to examine the transition patterns of these former workers. The findings indicate that former migrant blue-collar workers are more inclined to shift towards formal entrepreneurship rather than informal ventures. This suggests the importance of implementing supportive policies aimed at fostering entrepreneurial initiatives among blue-collar workers. Such policies could mitigate the risks associated with job losses, particularly in times of crisis, and provide a safety net by encouraging entrepreneurship. By facilitating entrepreneurial activity, these policies would not only bolster economic resilience but also offer alternative routes for workforce recovery, ultimately contributing to job security, financial stability, and long-term economic sustainability in the face of ongoing uncertainties.JEL Classification C25; J24; J63

Abstract

School to work transition is a crucial phase for individual success in the labor market. However, this transition is not occurring smoothly for fresh graduates in Indonesia. Despite stable economy in 2022, labor market absorption rate for fresh graduates in Indonesia remains low. This phenomenon is important as it is related to achieving Indonesia Emas 2045 through the quality of human capital among young people. This study aims to (1)analyze the general characteristics of fresh graduates based on their employment status; and (2)analyze the effect of demographic, human capital, and regional characteristics on the employment status. The data used is the microdata from Sakernas August 2022. The results of multinomial logistic regression show that human capital characteristics increase the probability of working in the formal sector but decrease the probability of working in the informal sector compared to being unemployed. These findings indicate a wait-and-see behavior in the labor market.

Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of labour migration in the Gerbangkertasusila (Greater Surabaya) region and identifies various factors influencing workers’ decisions to commute, migrate circularly, or permanently. Utilizing data from the 2023 National Labour Force Survey (SAKERNAS) and applying a multinomial logit model, the analysis addresses research gaps related to complex migratory patterns in rapidly urbanizing areas of Indonesia. The result suggested that individuals with higher education levels are significantly more likely to commute than to migrate permanently, while employment in the formal, service, and manufacturing sectors also increases the likelihood of commuting and circular migration. Married individuals are more inclined toward permanent migration, driven by a preference for family stability, whereas urban residents are less likely to engage in circular migration. These findings highlight  the need for targeted urban and labor policies that address mobility preferences based on education, sectoral employment, and household structure to ensure inclusive and balanced regional development. The study suggests that to support inclusive regional development, policymakers should invest in integrated transportation infrastructure, design mobility-support programs for circular migrants, and ensure gender-sensitive commuting systems. These measures will help manage urban growth and enhance equitable access to employment across the region.

Abstract

Poverty among farmers remains a structural challenge in agricultural development in Indonesia; low productivity and limited access to information technology are the main problems.  Addressing this issue is crucial for national food security and sustainable rural livelihoods. This study aims to examine the profile of poor farmers and analyze the effect of internet use on the risk of poverty among farmers in East Java Province. The data comes from the March 2023 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) microdata, comprising 21.368 individual observations. The analysis method used is binary logistic regression due to the binary classification of the dependent variable, with model segregation based on urban and rural areas, implemented using Stata software. The results show that poor farmers generally come from the food crop subsector and are concentrated in certain areas such as Madura Island.  Digital literacy and internet utilization are still very low, while access to formal financing is also limited.  Internet access significantly reduces the poverty risk, with users being 2.72 times more likely to be non-poor, especially in urban areas. This study recommends different policy approaches between urban and rural areas to realize inclusive and adaptive agriculture in the digital era.
