Abstract

Imagery is a mental picture imagined by a reader. This research discusses imagery that existed in Julianne MacLean's novel The Color of Heaven. The Color of Heaven is a novel that tells about Sophie Duncan's life and there is a lot of imagery used in it. The objectives of this research are to find imageries in the novel, to identify and classify the types of imagery, and to reveal the purposes of the imagery. The researcher uses Laurence Perrine's theory through Johnson & Arp (2016) about seven types of imagery which are visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, tactile imagery, organic imagery, and kinesthetic imagery. The researcher uses qualitative research design since the analysis explains the types and the purpose of the imagery. The study uses a formalism approach because the analysis is based on the researcher's interpretation. The data are collected straight from the book by reading it several times and taking notes of the sentence that reflects imagery, then categorizing the data into its imagery types in the form of a list. The result of the analysis shows that there are found six types of imagery except one is gustatory imagery. There are 32 visual imagery, 34 auditory imagery, 12 olfactory imagery, 11 tactile imagery, 16 organic imagery, and 20 kinesthetic imagery found in the novel.

The bourgeoisie in this novel is known as the royals, the nobility, and the rich people who are filled by the Silvers, while the proletariat is the Reds. They live to serve the Silvers, they work as servants, apprentices, and avant-garde soldiers. As Marx said that between these two classes there will be various kinds of conflicts. These conflicts arise because of inequalities or differences between them. Differences in social class can be seen in how social groups get their social status, use their privileges, and take advantage of their prestige. There is oppression of the Reds people, making them want to be free from the upper class oppression or exploitation through struggle against the Silvers. As for the efforts made by the Reds to avenge the inequality and oppression of the Silvers, it was through rebellion. The uprisings are portrayed epicly in this novel.

Abstract

This article examines Emily's multimodal experiences in Alexandra Potter's Me and Mr. Darcy with a focus on its relationship to the phenomenon of hallucinations. Hallucination is described as an incorrect sensory experience in which an individual perceives sights, odors, flavors, textures, or sounds that are not present in reality. In term of hallucination, multimodal is a type of hallucination that is a mixture of various sensory modalities, creating the perception that they originate from a single source. This article seeks to explore the types of various sensory modalities that constitute Emily's multimodal hallucination experience. This article employs a qualitative analysis method to explore an in-depth examination of the various sensory modalities of Emily’s hallucination. A psychological approach is used in this article to uncover Emily’s hallucination. This analysis utilizes Veague's theory about the forms of hallucination. The analysis shows that Emily experiences multimodal hallucination which is a combination of visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory hallucination that makes her feel that she can see the physical form, hear the voice, feel the touch, taste the food, and smell Mr. Darcy's perfume. The combination of these several sensory modalities that occur simultaneously makes the existence of Mr. Darcy seem real to Emily. Keywords: hallucination, multimodal, sensory experience
