Abstract

This paper puts forward the way to improve Indonesian EFL learners? pronunciation through Audiolingual Method principles. It will look at the critical period hypothesis, where the notion of ?native-like accent can be achieved? refers to. The Audiolingual Method, which emphasizes the teaching of spoken language and sees the language as a matter of habit will be used as a basis to teaching EFL learners? pronunciation. Both Indonesian and English segmental features will be discussed and compared in which the pronunciation teaching can be effectively delivered by identifying the difference between the two languages. In addition, the technology-assisted pronunciation teaching is presented as tools for helping EFL teachers in conveying a pronunciation course.

Abstract

The maintenance and preservation of Indonesian traditional knowledge and folklore is urgently needed. Traditional knowledge and folktale are cultural heritages that provide intangible wealth for Indonesia. This paper provides a brief analysis of the traditional values transmitted by our folktales and the functions served by local legends and myths in Plunturan society. This paper offers some practical recommendations for collecting our folktales, myths, and legends in the form of text using the currently available digital technology to create the first comprehensive and dynamic Plunturan folktales. This community service focuses on the problems that can arise when documenting folklore and traditional knowledge. what solutions should be done to overcome these problems. The method used in this study is by interviewing the resource person. The results of this study conclude that text documentation needs to be done to preserve folklore and traditional knowledge.Keywords: Traditional knowledge, Folktales, Plunturan, Documenting

Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia bagi penutur asing (BIPA) diajarkan dibeberapa lembaga pendidikan di Thailand. Dari beberapa lembaga penyelenggara BIPA tersebut, terdapat sekitar 30 lembaga menerima bantuan tenaga pengajar BIPA yang dikirim oleh pusat pengembangan strategi dan diplomasi kebahasaan (PPSDK). Pengajar BIPA dari PPSDK tersebar di sejumlah daerah di Thailand, termasuk di Thailand selatan (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, dan Satun). Jenjang pendidikan penyelenggara BIPA cukup bervariasi, dari sekolah dasar (rongreiyn prathm), sekolah menengah (rongreiyn mathym), dan perguruan tinggi (ni radab xudmsuksa).

Abstract

Abstract: The present study explored the effectiveness of teaching descriptive texts through Hot Potatoes to English as a foreign language (EFL) secondary school students and their perception of learning using this media. 31 junior high school students in Year VII participated in the study. A quasi-experimental with pretest -posttest design and a qualitative descriptive design were used in this inquiry. The results indicated that the use of Hot Potatoes to teach descriptive text to secondary school students was effective, pretest (M=74.74, SD=10.23) posttest (M=89.55, SD=5.96) t(30)=-10.97, p=.000 and that it was perceived to be useful and interesting teaching media by the students. These suggest that Hot Potatoes has potential benefits when incorporated into teaching of reading where the teachers can take it into account to be employed in their reading class.

Abstract

Madurese is the language used by the Madurese ethnic community, both living on the island of Madura and outside the island as a social language. The Madurese language has several dialects, but in a dialect, there are also several variations found in one area, for example, Bangkalan Regency. The purpose of this study is to obtain an overview of the variations of the Madurese lexicon in the Bangkalan Regency and to determine the isolect status of the different lexicon in the Bangkalan Regency. This study uses 335 glosses which are divided into 12 meaning fields to collect data in the field. Three informants for each research area (DP) were employed and dialectometric calculations were used to determine isolect status. The results showed that there were 216 differences in the lexicon from 335 glosses. Dialectometry analysis of lexical differences in DP 2: DP 4, DP 3: DP 4, and DP 4: DP 1 were 95.37%, 89.35%, and 90.74% respectively, suggesting that the lexical variations were used in DP 4. The percentage of the three other comparison areas shows under 20%, indicating there is no difference. In short, lexical variations of Madurese exists mostly in the Bangkalan Regency.

Abstract

This study investigated the factors affecting an EFL learner's success in learning English. An experienced English teacher was chosen as a model of a successful learner of English and was interviewed on how she learned English. The findings indicate that the factors contributing to her success in learning English include (1) internal motivation, (2) social context, and (3) a positive attitude towards English. The findings of this study are in line with second language learning theories. This implies that such factors as motivation, social context, and positive attitude towards target language need to be taken into account to succeed in learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

This paper explores EFL students’ perception of Indonesian English Teachers (IETs)/ Non-Native English Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) and Native English Speaking Teachers (NESTs) in English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia. 32 Indonesian EFL university students participated in this study. Employing a five-point Likert scale questionnaire (1= strongly disagree, 2= disagree, 3= neutral, 4= agree, 5= strongly agree) distributed to participants, this study found that (1) students perceived IETs/NNESTs to be better in teaching beginning learners as IETs/NNESTs apply Indonesian into English instruction, sharing the same first language and the same culture, understanding students’ problem in learning English, understanding the questions and providing clear answers, and sharing the same language learning process; (2) students perceived NESTs to be better in teaching advanced learners of English as NESTs are superior in their English proficiency. NESTs are perceived to better in teaching speaking, pronunciation, listening, and culture. This study implies that both IETs/NNSTs and NESTs have their strengths and weaknesses in the English language teaching context.

Abstract

This study intends to examine Indonesian EFL learners’ perception of using WhatsApp as an instructional tool to improve reading and writing skills. Covid-19 pandemic has made online learning compulsory for both teachers and students in which it is such a novel experience of instructional mode for some. WhatsApp as a pedagogical tool is thought to be feasible and readily available for the students and teachers to use at any time. With its features and capabilities to send multimedia messages such as images, recordings, audio, videos, and PDF files, it is believed to be potential to be used as a pedagogical tool. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire (1=strongly disagree; 2=disagree; 3=neutral/no opinion; 4=agree; 5=strongly agree) was employed to answer the research question. The result shows that the students perceived that using WhatsApp as a pedagogical tool can enhance reading and writing skills (average response = 3,53). It indicates that as a pedagogical tool, WhatsApp can be taken into account to be integrated into online learning.

Abstract

This paper reports on an exploratory study that investigated learners’ perceptions and preferences of written corrective feedback (WCF) in Indonesian EFL setting. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 32 adult English learners studying academic writing. Employing written questionnaire, the study explored the learners’ perceptions and preferences of WCF. The results indicated that the participants (1) mainly expressed a favorable attitude towards error correction or WCF; (2) preferred to revise errors on punctuation (40%), vocabulary (30%), spelling (15%), grammar (10%), and organization (5%); (3) considered commenting on content, grammar, organization, overall quality of writing equally important; (4) believed that WCF is effective when it is presented by underlining the error and then pointing to the correct source of information, showing the location of the error and indicating the type of error, underlining the error, and then telling the correct form, providing corrections for errors and then providing an explanation regarding the improvements; and (5) shared similar opinions about WCF, regardless of their proficiency level. Overall, the findings confirm the significance of WCF for Indonesian EFL learners learning to write.
