Abstract

The maintenance and preservation of Indonesian traditional knowledge and folklore is urgently needed. Traditional knowledge and folktale are cultural heritages that provide intangible wealth for Indonesia. This paper provides a brief analysis of the traditional values transmitted by our folktales and the functions served by local legends and myths in Plunturan society. This paper offers some practical recommendations for collecting our folktales, myths, and legends in the form of text using the currently available digital technology to create the first comprehensive and dynamic Plunturan folktales. This community service focuses on the problems that can arise when documenting folklore and traditional knowledge. what solutions should be done to overcome these problems. The method used in this study is by interviewing the resource person. The results of this study conclude that text documentation needs to be done to preserve folklore and traditional knowledge.Keywords: Traditional knowledge, Folktales, Plunturan, Documenting

Abstract

Abstract. This article tries to discover the oppression undergoing  by the female character, named Shamimma. The oppression is done by the male character named Suranjan. The oppression happens on the basis idea that Shamimma is a Muslim, the group of the people who Suranjan believe have kidnapped and raped her sister Maya. The discussion uses multicultural and glogal feminism criticism for what happen to Shamimma and Maya is among the problems that this  criticism concerns with. Key words: feminisme multikultural, kekerasan seksual, kekerasan agama

Abstract

Abstract. This article discusses the weaknesses of student’s comprehension on theories that they were applying on their research. The result of the analysis were: 1) in applying genetic structuralism the students did not relate the structure of a literary work with the structure of the society on the issue; 2) they did not state clearly their stand points in applying feminist criticism; 3) in applying the political-ideology criticism, the students explained nothing on the author’s strategies to bring out his or her political-ideology; 4) in their applying theory of hegemony, the students were unclearly to choose the interested perspectives; 5) the students were not appropriately to choose the audience of which they addressed, and did not clearly state “the horazone of the reader’s expectation”, “open space”, ; 6) the students did not clearly discussed the text norms, reader’s knowledge and reading experiences, the tensions appearing between fiction and reality in a literary work in applying redear’s reception. Each theory has its own principle characteristics in approaching a literary work. Key words: mastering theories, applying theories, sociological approach, feminism, reader’s reception

Abstract

Abstract. This article reports an investigation of secular humanism values in J.V. Goethe’s Ifigenia di Semenanjung Tauris. The issues being investigated are: (1) the conflicts among the characters, and (2) the values of secular humanism in the conflicts themselves. This study adopts the theory of humanism that is the system of belief based on a faith in democracy, rationality, and human autonomy. The research uses descriptive qualitative method in which the data are in the form of text. The analysis shows that the conflicts are caused by personal will based on authority, religion, and revenge, and the rejection of the will based on humanity. Agamemnon and Thoas represent the authority to fulfill their will of human sacrifice in accordance with their religious teaching. On the contrary, Ifigenia represents the rejection of human sacrifice. The debate between the fulfillment of the will and the rejection of the will reveals the values of humanism. Key words: conflict, humanism secular, human autonomy

Abstract

Abstract. This article explores rationalismin Prastari’s Misteri Delman Merah Jambu. Rationalism covers the idea that human beings can arrive at truth by using reason, rather than relying on past authority, religious institutions, or on intuition. In Prastari’s Misteri Delman Merah Jambu, rationalism is presented through the character Alva. In his reaction towards the prohibition for children under 15 to stay at home before 7 at the evening, Alva tries to discover the reason behind this prohibition. He does not believe in what other children believe that there is a supernatural power represented by Delman Merah Jambu (pink horse cart) rode by a beautiful lady in white clothes. The writer applied the qualitative confirmatory method in conducting the research. Key words: rationalism, supernatural power, reason

Abstract

Abstract. Translating complex structures have always been a challenge for a translator since the structures can be densed with ideas and particular logical relations. The purpose of translation is reproducing texts into another language to make them available to wider readerships. Since language is not merely classification of a set of universal and general concept, that each language articulates or organizes the world differently, the concepts in one language can be radically different from another. One issue in translation is the difference among languages, that the wider gaps between the source and target languages may bring greater problems of transfer of message from the source into the target languages (Culler, 1976). Problematic factors involved in translation include meaning, style, proverbs, idioms and others. A number of translation procedures and strategies have been discussed to solve translation problems. This article presents analysis of complex structures in scientific Indonesian, the problems and effects on translation into English. The study involves data taken from two research article papers in Indonesian to be translated into English. The results of the analysis show seven (7) problems of Indonesian complex structures, whose effect on translation process can be grouped into two: complex structures related to grammar (including: complex structure with incomplete information, run-on sentences, redundancy , sentence elements with inequal semantic relation, and logical relation and choice of conjunctor) and complex structures related to information processing in discourse (including: front-weight- structure and thematic structure with changes of Theme element). Problems related to grammar may be solved with language economy and accuracy while those related to discourse may be solved with understanding information packaging patterns in the target language discourse. Abstract

Abstract. This article deals with the characteristics of young adult literature and explores the dichotomy of two worlds in Mandy Hubbard’s Prada and Prejudice. The focus of analysis is the experience of Callie Montgomery during her school tour to London. She is an American senior high school student of the 21st century. She is popular as a bookworm and clumsy girl in her social relation with her mates of her age. Callie’s mysterious experience in which she enters an English society 200 years back after falling down when she was trying her new shoes of Prada’s brand for a recognition of her mates forced her to face a life of two different worlds separated by 200 years. The old world is represented by a society’s life in England in 1815. The new world is represented by the character’s introspection of the 21st life. The analysis discusses three aspects of the two worlds: physical, social, and spiritual world. There is also a discussion on the main character’s critical attitudes and her understanding on the differences of the two worlds, particularly on her own personality. Abstract

Artikel ini melaporkan satu bagian dari proses penerjemahan teks akademik dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Proses pada tahap ini melibatkan mahasiswa di kelas Penerjemahan Teks Akademik pada Semester I tahun akademik 2019-2020, pada Prodi Sastra Inggris, Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya sebagai penerjemah pemula. Artikel ini membahas strategi penerjemahan kosakata teknis yang terdapat dalam naskah bahasa sumber. Dooga (2005) menjelaskan dasar penerjemahan fungsional, yaitu bahwa penerjemahan teks yang memiliki kualitas yang tinggi haruslah menyatakan tingkatan hasil terjemahan yang setara yang sebagus mungkin dengan mempertimbangkan keadaan-keadaan yang ada dalam proses produksi teks. Penerjemahan fungsional berorientasi kepada bahasa target. Dengan mempertimbangkan sasaran, tujuan, ataupun audiens yang menjadi target pembaca, penerjemahan fungsional akan mentransformasikan tatabahasa dan gaya bahasa dalam bahasa sumber ke dalam tatabahasa dan sintaksis dalam bahasa target untuk menghindarkan terjemahan yang ceroboh, tidak idiomatis, dan bahkan salah. Sebanyak 437 istilah teknis di bidang ilmu kesusastraan diterjemahkan dari buku An Outline of English Literature (1984) karya G.C. Thornley dan Gwyneth Roberts dengan berbagai strategi penerjemahan sebagaimana dijabarkan oleh Baker (1990). Penelitian bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dan melibatkan mesin penerjemah online Google Translate sebagai instrumen pada tahap awal proses penerjemahan, diikuti dengan tiga rangkaian proses perbaikan dan penyuntingan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi penerjemahan istilah-istilah dalam bidang ilmu kesusastraan oleh mahasiswa penerjemah dapat dibagi menjadi empat (4) jenis: (1) istilah tidak diterjemahkan (borrowing), (2) istilah diterjemahkan secara parsial (menjadi borrowing dengan adaptasi), (3) istilah diterjemahkan secara literal (penerjemahan menekankan bentuk), dan (4) istilah diterjemahkan secara sepadan ke dalam bahasa target. Pembahasan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan tentang permasalahan penerjemahan kosakata teknis di bidang ilmu tertentu. Abstract

Pertumbuhan dan hasil karya komunitas sastra berperan besar dalam perkembangan sastra di Indonesia. Ada banyak komunitas sastra di Indonesia. Komunitas sastra yang muncul harus mampu berjuang, bertarung, dan berkompetisi dengan komunitas sastra lainnya dalam khasanah (arena) sastra Indonesia. Komunitas sastra merupakan agen yang melakukan praktik sastra dengan tujuan untuk mendapatkan laba simbolik (pengakuan) di arena sastra Indonesia. Keberhasilan komunitas sastra ini dipengaruhi oleh strategi dan distribusi modal masing-masing komunitas dalam melakukan praktik sastra. Berlatar pada pemikiran di atas, dilakukan penelitian terhadap komunitas sastra di Surabaya, yaitu Forum Studi Sastra dan Seni Luar Pagar (FS3LP) dan Komunitas Rebo Sore untuk menemukan strategi yang diterapkan. Pemilihan FS3LP dan Komunitas Rebo Sore ini dikarenakan kedua komunitas tersebut mampu bertahan dan berhasil menciptakan sastrawan bertaraf nasional. Penemuan strategi ini diharapkan dapat dijadikan sebagai salah satu acuan bagi komunitas sastra lainnya yang ada maupun bagi yang akan mendirikan komunitas sastra. Dengan demikian, sastra Indonesia akan lebih berkembang dengan variasi estetik yang beragam. Metode penelitian dibagi menjadi yaitu metode pengumpulan data dan analisis data. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan dua langkah yaitu wawancara dan studi pustaka. Peneltian ini menghasilkan temuan bahwa strategi yang dipakai oleh komunitas FS3LP dan KRS adalah mengeskplorasi distribusi modal kultural, yaitu esteika surrealisme dan puisi gelap oleh FS3LP serta puisi terang oleh KRS.

Abstract

This article explores tl1e aristotelia n friendship in King 's The Body to answer two questions: 1) how is friendship described in Stephen King 's The body?; 2) what kinds of friendships are  desscribed in Stephen King s The body? Aristotle grouped friendship into tlueefriendship based on utility ,friendship based on pleasure, andfoendship based on goodness. The  research method  applied  was qualitative descriptive.The result of the analysis showed  Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern performed friendship based  on  utility  and  lfriendship  based  on pleasure while Gordie and Chris perfonned in the friendship based on goodness because  only  both of them who always stayed to gethe r and shared goodness in their relationship , the y encouraged one another in good things. Chris showed his love and care to Gordie by the way he pushed Gordie to join the collage course and leave the gang because tlle gang will only drag him down.
