Abstract

This study will examine four issues: Laura's PTSD symptoms, PTSD causes, PTSD effects, and the defense mechanisms Laura employs to manage her PTSD. This study uses a literary psychology approach with PTSD concept theory by Rogers & Liness of the National Institute of Mental Health and and defense mechanism theory which will focus on how Laura defends herself in dealing with PTSD. This study uses a qualitative research method. The source of the data is Ruth Wares’ The Woman in Cabin 10. The writer uses data collection techniques by reading the whole novel, identifying, collecting, classifying and analyzing data. Based on the analysis, Laura experiences four symptoms: re-experiencing, avoidance, arousal and reactivity, and cognition and mood. Laura has PTSD due to a break-in at her flat that left serious scars on her face after a burglar tried to lock her in a room and she spent two hours trying to escape and call for help. These events affect aggression, panic attacks, insomnia, claustrophobia, hallucinations, illusions, and horrific imaginations. Laura uses Defense Mechanism as a self-esteem boost to protect herself from disturbing feelings and thoughts that she cannot handle. From the data, Laura uses several defense mechanisms such as repression, denial, rationalization, sublimation, projection, reaction formation, and displacement. Repression and rationalization are the defense mechanisms that Laura uses the most. Laura uses repression to put her anxiety due to PTSD into her subconscious and forget about it so that it does not interfere with her daily life. Laura uses rationalizations to justify her feelings and actions to attain comfort and ego satisfaction.

Abstract

This research investigates the psychological transformation of Loulie al-Nazari, protagonist of Chelsea Abdullah’s The Stardust Thief, by combining Christopher Vogler’s twelve-stage adaptation of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth with Carl Jung’s theory of archetypes. Three aims guide the study: identifying how Vogler’s twelve stages manifest in Loulie’s narrative arc, determining which internal and external factors drive her psychological development, and evaluating the resulting shift in her identity and self-perception. A qualitative descriptive design, supported by close reading and content analysis of the novel as primary data, is used to reach these aims. Results indicate that Loulie’s arc realizes all twelve of Vogler’s stages, opening with a forced call to adventure and advancing through mounting trials before reaching a decisive reckoning with her hidden past inside the ruins of the Queen of Dunes. Jung’s archetypes account for the internal dimension of this development: the Shadow surfaces as the grief she buries after her tribe’s destruction, the Persona takes shape as the Midnight Merchant guise she uses for self-protection, and the Animus emerges in the resilience and nerve she calls upon across the quest. Externally, the surrounding cast enacts Vogler’s archetypal roles, Qadir as Mentor, Omar as Shadow, Mazen as Ally, and Aisha as Shapeshifter. As the narrative closes, Loulie edges toward individuation, reclaiming a name and history she once suppressed and arriving at a more unified sense of self. The research concludes that Abdullah’s novel illustrates the continued cross-cultural relevance of the Campbell–Vogler model.

Abstract

This study examines the psychological trauma experienced by Theodore Decker, the protagonist of Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Goldfinch (2013). Using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory as the primary framework, the research identifies the causes of Theodore's trauma, examines its effects on his behavior and psychological condition, and analyzes the defense mechanisms he employs in response to his traumatic experiences. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method, with the novel serving as the primary data source; data were collected through close reading and note-taking and analyzed by interpreting narrative passages that relate to Theodore's psychological condition. The findings show that Theodore's trauma originates from the death of his mother in a museum bombing, the bombing itself, abandonment by his father, and the resulting loss of stability and security. These experiences produce lasting psychological effects, including repressed memory, repetition compulsion, unresolved loss, and a gradually developing self-awareness. To cope with this suffering, Theodore relies on unconscious defense mechanisms, namely repression, denial, displacement, projection, and regression, alongside an emerging capacity for self-awareness and acceptance. The study concludes that trauma in the novel functions not as a temporary reaction but as an ongoing psychological process, and that partial healing becomes possible through growing self-understanding and meaningful human connection.
