Abstract

Abstract The policy issued by the government regarding study from home during the COVID-19 pandemic has created new problems in learning in schools. Students assume that study from home is a holiday activity that they enjoy at home. This kind of learning also causes students to feel bored because every day they face very monotonous activities. This study aims to describe the problems of pedagogy with study from home (SFH) in learning English at SMP Negeri 1 Ranah Pesisir during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. As the subject of this research, four English teachers teach grades VII, VIII and IX at SMP Negeri 1 Ranah Pesisir. From the data analysis, the researchers obtained the results, namely, 1) the absence of online study from home learning training, so that teachers still lacked experience in improving online SFH learning activities. 3) Limited time with SFH online makes students unable to complete school assignments on time. 4) Lack of parental concern for students because parents are still pretentious with the online SFH learning system, they are not used to being involved in the learning process. Abstrak Kebijakan yang dikeluarkan pemerintah tentang study from home selama pandemi COVID-19 telah memunculkan masalah baru dalam pembelajaran disekolah. Siswa beranggapan bahwa study from home merupakan sebuah kegiatan liburan yang mereka nikmati dirumah. Pembelajaran seperti ini juga menimbulkan rasa bosan pada siswa karena setiap hari mereka menghadapi aktifitas yang sangat monoton. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan problematika pedagogi dengan study from home (SFH) dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 1 Ranah Pesisir masa pandemi COVID-19. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Sebagai subjek dari penelitian ini adalah empat orang guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengajar kelas VII, VIII dan IX di SMP Negeri 1 Ranah Pesisir. Dari analisis data maka peneliti memperoleh hasil yaitu, 1) tidak adanya pelatihan pembelajaran study from home daring, sehingga guru masih kurang berpengelaman dalam memperbaiki kegiatan pembelajaran SFH online. 3) Waktu yang terbatas dengan SFH online membuat siswa tidak bisa menyelesaikan tugas sekolah dengan tepat waktu. 4) Kurangnya kepedulian orang tua pada siswa karena orang tua masih sok dengan sistem belajar SFH online, mereka belum terbiasa terlibat dalam proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the speaking ability of the first grade students at SMPN 1 Pesisir in telling their daily activities. The design of this study was descriptive method. Cluster random sampling was used to select the sample. The total number of sample was 62 students’. The data were collected through speaking test. The data was measured by considering five components of speaking. Based on the findings of this study, students speaking ability were low. The findings were proved by the evidence that 85.49% of them cannot tell their daily activities orally. Based on the findings, this study was suggested for English teachers to consider the five components of speaking when measuring students’ speaking ability and English teachers were suggested to provide more practices for those components of speaking. The students were suggested to do more practices and improve their comprehension about material especially in speaking.
