Abstract

This paper’s primary purpose is to examine the concept and the impact of multicultural education that is seen in The Education of Little Tree. This paper employs American Studies perspective and Historicism theory in order to obtain the purpose of the study. Using American Studies perspective, this research views Native Americans as indigenous people of America. Using Historicism theory, this research is able to uncover the concept and the impact of multicultural education in the novel by viewing the socio-historical context that is referred by the novel and the socio-historical context when the novel was written and then published. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the concept of multicultural education that is seen in the The Education of Little Tree is similar to the concept that is promoted by the experts of multicultural education. The education that is given by the grandparents promotes cultural pride, knowledge of historical information of a culture, and respect towards other cultures. Furthermore, there are several positive impacts of multicultural education that is seen in The Education of Little Tree, they are: first, children possess cultural pride; second, children possess the historical knowledge of their own culture; third, children possess the cultural knowledge of other cultures in their society; and fourth, children respect other cultures in their society.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2017.010104

Abstract

Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study aims at describing how the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) has improved students’ reading and speaking skills in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) class at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The contextual and real-life situations designed in PBL are expected to equip them better to practice the language and apply the content knowledge. The results of the questionnaires and interviews suggest that the students generally perceived PBL as an effective and creative method in learning. It has also helped them acquire better reading and speaking skills through the accomplishment of a variety of group projects. The improvements cover, among others, vocabulary, grammar as well as fluency and confidence in speaking. It is hoped that this research can provide benefits to researchers and FBE UAJY in general. The results of this study may provide meaningful inputs on the process of teaching and learning activities. Thus, ESP lecturers can find the most appropriate method to improve students’ English skills.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of identity crisis in Minari, an American film depicting the life of Korean diasporas in the USA. This study employed Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze the identity crisis encountered by the main character and Korean and western cultural contact in the United States of America. The researchers analyzed the main protagonist using psychological perspectives to uncover unconsciousness in his decision-making to obtain the study's objectives. In this study, the main character of this film was Jacob, after undergoing the three stages of Greimas’ structural analysis. The main character displayed an identity crisis in discursive actions, non-discursive, and discourse materialization. Further analysis uncovered that immigration was the basis for the identity crisis in Minari. Moreover, the identity crisis was described in Jacob's roles in the diaspora process: the first child, husband, and father. Of the three roles, the circumstances experienced in the diaspora process made Jacob struggle with his identity. Fortunately, he overcame the identity crisis, which was symbolized by minari, a vegetable, as a symbol of perseverance in the film.

Abstract

Kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris merupakan suatu kebutuhan untuk berhasil dalam dunia kerja dan usaha dewasa ini. Namun banyak siswa sekolah merasa takut dalam mempraktekkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggrisnya dalam percakapan karena merasa tidak percaya diri, takut membuat kesalahan ataupun ditertawakan teman. Untuk itu Paroki Gereja Santo Mikael Pangkalan merasa perlu mendukung murid-murid SMP dan SMA/SMK dengan program pelatihan Bahasa Inggris. Program Bahasa Inggris diadakan dengan melibatkan berbagai kegiatan permainan agar peserta tidak merasa tegang dan takut dalam mempraktekkan Bahasa Inggris yang sudah mereka kuasai. Roleplay, kuis dadakan (pop up quiz), penulisan cerita dan penulisan caption adalah contoh beberapa permainan yang diadakan tanpa penggunaan gawai. Permainan kuis dengan menggunakan gawai juga diadakan melalui aplikasi Kahoot!. Selain itu para siswa juga diajak untuk mengunjungi kebun binatang dan menjawab pertanyaan yang diberikan melalui permainan Treasure Hunt. Untuk menjaga motivasi, setiap peserta mendapat satu poin bila berhasil melakukan tugas yang diberikan. Poin ini akan diakumulasi di akhir program dan dapat ditukar dengan hadiah. Melalui berbagai kegiatan dan permainan yang menyenangkan, peserta didik mampu mengembangkan kemampuan berkomunikasinya. Peserta didik juga mulai merasa percaya diri dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dalam percakapan. Kesulitan menemukan kosa kata yang tepat mereka atasi dengan saling bertanya pada teman atau instruktur. Peserta juga saling membantu saat ada teman yang menghadapi masalah dalam menyusun kalimat. Di akhir program 75% peserta mampu mempresentasikan pengalamannya selama belajar di program ini.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan program pelatihan Bahasa Inggris bagi pekerja migran Indonesia di level pemula ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan mitra. Kerjasama dengan IDN Global, pelatihan ini berfokus pada kemampuan Bahasa Inggris di level dasar. Koordinasi antara tutor, pihak IDN Global dan tim PkM hanya melalui media daring, tapi luaran yang dihasilkan dapat dirancang dan diaplikasikan dengan baik. Hal ini terukur respon positif para pekerja migran Indonesia yang menjadi peserta pelatihan yang terdokumentasi di form evaluasi kegiatan. Para pekerja migran didukung untuk semakin meningkatkan kompetensi Bahasa Inggrisnya sebagai nilai tambah mereka agar dapat bersaing dalam dunia kerja di luar Indonesia dan mewujudkan citra PMI yang berkualitas. Topik Batch IV tentang Kesehatan menjadi sangat relevan di masa pandemi dan menjadi wadah komunikasi yang baik antar para pekerja migran di perantauan. Berakhirnya program pengabdian ini menjadi awal kerja sama UAJY dan IDN Global untuk mengembangkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka dalam topik pembelajaran lainnya.

Abstract

This research examines the students’ perception of the teacher’s facilitation in online group work in English for Managers class at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The study employed The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework perspective, which consists of teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence. CoI has been widely employed in designing practical online courses. Thus, this descriptive qualitative research analyzed students’ perceptions of facilitation in online group work using questionnaires and interviews. The research participants were English for Managers students. They were selected since they have experience participating in online group work. The results of the study show that most of the participants have demonstrated to possess a positive perception of the teacher’s facilitation in online group work in EFM class at FBE UAJY.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-state schools in Yogyakarta lacked learning materials due to insufficient funds. Thus, there was a need to develop an interactive trilingual teaching book for kindergarten students with an exciting story approach and thematic learning content so that students would enjoy the learning process. Furthermore, the book uses three languages, Indonesian, English and Korean, to develop the students becoming polyglots. To produce interactive learning media, the service group members implemented the Borg and Gall Model supported by Piaget’s foundation theory of language acquisition. The community service results show that interactive learning media in the form of storybooks can make children focus and visualize new vocabulary to be taught. The storytelling method itself is a method that can improve cognitive abilities, especially in the perceiving part and improve the children's foreign language skills. While the exciting stories in it make children interested and eventually become more focused on learning.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris menjadi sebuah keharusan bagi murid sekolah dasar saat ini untuk berhasil dalam studi. Namun pada prakteknya, banyak orang tua yang mengeluhkan nilai Bahasa Inggris yang tidak memuaskan dan mereka tidak memiliki kemampuan finansial untuk mengirimkan putra-putrinya belajar Bahasa Inggris di luar jam sekolah. Karena itu Tim Pelayanan Pendidikan di Paroki Santo Antonius Kotabaru mengadakan bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa-siswi Sekolah Dasar yang menerima beasiswa dari paroki. Untuk melaksanakan bimbingan, peserta dibagi dalam dua kelompok berdasarkan kelas: Group A berisi siswa kelas 1 dan 2, dan Grup B yang terdiri dari siswa kelas 3 sampai 6. Pembagian ini untuk memudahkan proses pengajaran yang menggunakan metode eklektik yang menggabungkan berbagai pendekatan sesuai dengan kondisi pembelajar saat proses pengajaran dilakukan. Siswa kelas 1 dan 2 cenderung lebih suka bermain dan masih memiliki kesulitan dalam membaca bahkan tulisan dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Siswa kelas 3-6 cenderung sudah bisa membaca dengan baik dan pernah belajar Bahasa Inggris sebelumnya sehingga mereka cenderung lebih mudah diajak belajar Bahasa Inggris. Dengan metode eklektif yang fleksibel disesuaikan dengan kondisi kelas, para siswa dapat membangun motivasi untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris dengan lebih nyaman, produktif dan efektif.

Abstract

Desa Tayuban, kecamatan Panjatan, kabupaten Kulonprogo, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta merupakan desa kesenian yang memiliki kebudayaan yang sangat kental. Letak dan geografis desa Tayuban memiliki potensi pertanian. Hasil pertanian tersebut kemudian diolah menjadi makanan seperti jamur tiram, apem, dawet, peyek bayam,tempe kedelai, abon lele, wajik lapis, gudheg, jenang,wingko merah, roti mlati, criping, molen dan peyek welut. Olahan makanan ini diproduksi oleh usaha mikro kecil dan menengah (UMKM) yang dilakukan oleh kelompok ibu-ibu tani di Desa Tayuban. Namun, kurangnya strategi pemasaran dan belum memiliki kemasan yang menarik konsumen sehingga membuat masyarakat kurang mengenal produk-produk olahan makanan. Tujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk memberikan pelatihan serta meningkatkan keterampilan melalui kratifitas kemasan-kemasan yang menarik pada masing-masing produk sehingga memiliki ciri khas tersendiri serta memberi pelatihan untuk memasarkan produknya sehingga dapat dikenal oleh masyrakat dan menarik perhatian konsumen. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dan kualitatif. Hasil dari makalah ini adalah memberikan inovasi kemasan yang menarik untuk makanan dan minuman tradisional juga memberikan solusi mengenai pemasaran produk makanan tradisional Desa Tayuban secara online melalui marketplace bernama Tokopedia.
