Abstract

The growth of the human population has resulted in the conversion of agricultural land into residential areas, and one potential solution to this issue is utilizing hydroponic technology for agriculture. The Smart Watering SWU02 hydroponic system is one type of hydroponic technology that can be employed for this purpose. Proper spacing plays a crucial role in hydroponics because it can impact plant growth and development. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the impact of spacing on the growth and yield of green butterhead lettuce (Lectuca sativa var. capitata L.). A completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments, consisting of 12.5 x 12.5 cm, 20x20cm, and 25 x 25 cm spacing, each replicated three times, was used in this study. The results demonstrated that plant spacing significantly affected plant growth and yield. Planting lettuce with a spacing of 25 x 25 cm resulted in the best outcomes and had a significant impact on plant growth and yield compared to other spacing options, with a plant height growth of 18.33 cm, a plant width of 31.17 cm, a yield of plant weight of 122.78 grams, and a distance between leaves of 0.03 cm. Optimal plant growth and avoiding etiolation symptoms can be achieved by spacing plants apart, which minimizes competition for nutrients. Keywords: Green Butterhead Lettuce., Hydroponics, Planting Spacing, Plant Yield

Abstract

As the demand for efficient and cost-effective greenhouse microclimate surveillance has increased, we developed a microclimate surveillance system using microcontroller technology that automatically collects temperature and relative humidity data and transmits it to a cloud server for remote surveillance and data analysis. 1971 microclimate data points were acquired over a 20-day evaluation period, providing insights into greenhouse environmental conditions with a negative linear regression between air temperature and relative humidity within the greenhouse and an R-squared of 0.73. This illustrates the system’s ability to record and quantify environmental conditions data. Additionally, we derived a predictive model to manage microclimate conditions using the regression formula y = -6.12X + 238.33, where X represents the air temperature and y represents the relative humidity. All the results show that the acquired data can be used to make decisions to optimize plant growth. The prototype we developed can be an alternative option for small and medium-sized farms that need a greenhouse surveillance system to improve operational efficiency and reduce surveillance costs. The system can be further developed by implementing additional sensors to monitor light intensity, wind speed, or soil moisture and further data analysis models to optimize greenhouse management.

Abstract

Hydroponics is an agricultural farming system that does not use soil media but uses water media containing nutrient solutions. The purpose of this research is to measure and observe dissolved oxygen levels in the Smart Watering Unpad and Autopot Systems that have never been done before. The research was conducted using descriptive analysis method that is measuring, observing, calculating, and analysing quantitative data on hydroponic installations Smart Watering Unpad and Autopot. The fertigation used in this study were Smart Watering Unpad and Autopot with the parameters observed were ambient temperature, dissolved oxygen, and the relationship between ambient temperature and Dissolved Oxygen for 30 days of observation. The results showed that the response of dissolved oxygen levels was influenced by environmental temperature in the SWU 01 Lettuce, SWU 02, SWU 03, and SWU 01 Paprika systems had a NEGATIVE relationship direction. The Autopot system is the only installation that has a POSITIVE change in the relationship of dissolved oxygen levels influenced by ambient temperature. Autopot is a hydroponic installation that can maintain the availability of dissolved oxygen levels in the nutrient solution. The Smart Watering Unpad 02 installation can maintain the availability of dissolved oxygen levels in the nutrient solution compared to other installations in the Smart Watering Unpad system type.
