Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the cause of failure in mathematics for students at college. The error analysis used by researchers was based on Newman's analysis with the stages of reading, understanding, transformation, process skills, and writing answers. This research was conducted on the students of University of PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya who study for two semesters. The data collection technique used by researchers was by test and interview techniques in which to determine the accuracy and the result of the data, the researcher carried out a triangulation process of the two techniques. The result of this research used by third students who have lowest grade. The results of this study indicate that the first subject and the third subject make a type of error at the reading stage, understanding, transformation, process skills, and writing answer. While for the second subject types of error made in solving mathematical story problems are at the stage of transformation and process skills. Some of the factors that cause this error include students who do not understand the meaning of some of the sentences the question, the students do not know the information the complete of question, students do not know the formula to be used, students do not take appropriate algebraic steps, and students do not understand the final step of the question.

Abstract

63 students were involved in the study and elected Rizka as the subject of research. This is a case study aimed at describing the cause of Rizka's failure in solving ill-structured problems about the rectangle. The results showed that the subject was able to represent the problem with own language. Rizka failed to build a solution that corresponds to the problem due to partial mastery of the rectangular concept. Rizka uses trial and error because it fails to associate a problem with a square concept that is the key to problem-solving success. Rizka success in the justification process because the process is counting without giving meaning. Meanwhile, the monitoring and evaluation process carried out by Rizka has failed. Rizka confusion determines the final solution because the solution is built does not qualify the problem solution. This is where the Rizka fails to provide the final solution. In this case, teachers have a role to teach their students to build relationships between concepts that can be utilized in problem-solving.

Abstract

Abstract

The preparation of research articles is an obligation of high school teachers as an effort to support their careers. However, many of the teachers of SMAN 1 Dawarblandong have experienced difficulties in compiling articles. This community service uses workshops. The participants are teachers of SMAN 1 Dawarblandong. This activity will be divided into two stages, namely the initial stage starting with the dissemination of the delivery of the definition of scientific articles and the importance of writing scientific articles and the second stage of a workshop on assisting the preparation of scientific articles based on research results. From these activities, it was found that teachers were more familiar with the basic concepts of scientific articles and were able to compile scientific articles of research results well.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the discovery learning model in enhancing mathematics learning interest among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 33 Surabaya. A quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group was employed. A total of 62 students were divided into an experimental group (taught using discovery learning) and a control group (taught conventionally). Data were collected through a learning interest questionnaire and analyzed manually using normality, homogeneity, and t-tests. The results revealed that the experimental group exhibited significantly higher learning interest than the control group. These findings demonstrate that discovery learning positively contributes to fostering students' interest in mathematics. Thus, this model is recommended to create more engaging and effective mathematics instruction.
