Abstract

Abstract The interaction conducted by traders with buyers in Kejajar Wonosobo Market intends to reach a final agreement in transaction activities. In the final agreement, there is an interesting thing that needs to be observed, namely the use of certain words that have the influence of the seller on the buyer. The power of influence is a speech that can be understood by speakers and speech partners. The power of influence is known as the act of speech illocution. In this article, the author aims to describe the type and function of illocution speech and its relevance to Indonesian language learning in high school. Based on the results of data analysis found 41 speech data included in the type and function of illocution speech actions carried out by sellers with buyers in Kejajar Wonosobo Market. The data included 7 data on expressive speech types, 17 data on the type of corrective speech directive, 11 data on the type of corrective speech, and 6 data types of commission speech, while the type of declarative illocution speech was not found. In addition, the illocution speech function was found to consist of 17 competitive function data, 13 convivial function data, 11 collaborative function data, while for conflictive illocution speech function was not found. Furthermore, the results of this study were integrated into Indonesian language learning in negotiation text material in high school grade X, in KD 3.11: Analyzing the content, structure (orientation, submission, offer, approval, closing) and language of the negotiating text.

Abstract

Salah satu bentuk peningkatan profesionalisme dalam penguasaan Bahasa Inggris bagi seorang Dosen adalah memperoleh nilai TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) yang cukup untuk menunjukkan kecakapan mereka dalam berbahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan ini diberikan kepada para dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban Brebes. Tujuan pelatihan ini adalah memberikan pemahaman yang lebih baik dan menambah pengetahuan mereka dan bagaimana menghadapi TOEFL. Hasil pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman dan pengetahuan yang lebih baik mengenai TOEFL kepada para dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban, Brebes. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan secara virtual dengan menggunakan metode ceramah dan diskusi. Metode ceramah digunakan untuk penyampaian materi pelatihan, sedangkan metode diskusi digunakan dalam sesi tanya jawab. Target luaran yang diharapkan dari kegiatan ini antara lain: 1) Para pendidik khususnya Dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban dapat memahami TOEFL dengan lebih baik; 2) Dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban dapat mengenali jenis soal-soal yang diujikan dalam TOEFL dengan lebih baik; 3) Dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban mampu menggunakan tips dan trik yang terdapat di dalam soal TOEFL dengan lebih baik; dan 4) Dosen FKIP Universitas Peradaban mampu mendapatkan score TOEFL yang lebih tinggi untuk mengembangkan karir, studi, dan program-program pengembangan diri lainnya.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the implementation of StoryJumper, to describe the students’ skills in writing descriptive text after being taught using StoryJumper, and to explain the teacher’s and student’s perceptions toward the use of StoryJumper at the tenth-grade of MA Al Ikhsan Beji in the Academic Year 2022/2023. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this research were students in class X Social Science 1. The data were collected from observations, tests, and interviews. The result of this research shows that teaching writing skills through descriptive text using digital storytelling “StoryJumper” run effectively. It could be seen from the result of the observation that the teacher and the students could implement StoryJumper as a medium for teaching writing descriptive text properly. The students’ skills in writing descriptive text improved after the implementation of StoryJumper. From the result of the tests, the mean scores increased from 48.95 in pre-test to 71.94 in post-test 1 and to 80.38 in post-test 2. The students’ scores were analyzed using the Paired Samples T-Test in SPSS 20.  The result shows that the p-value is 0.000 which is less than 0.05. It means that the result is statistically significant. The teacher and students also had positive perceptions toward the use of StoryJumper. Furthermore, it can be concluded that digital storytelling “StoryJumper” is effective to be used as a learning medium for writing descriptive text. Keywords: Teaching Writing, Descriptive Text, Digital Storytelling StoryJumper

Abstract

This case study aims at analyzing the bilingualism Indonesian-English code mixing in parents’ day-to-day talk toward children’s literacy development in learning English. The areas of analysis in this bilingualism study include code-mixing categories: intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and changing dictions. Further, those areas give impacts to the children’s literacy development. The findings indicate that the parent is a bilingual who used Indonesian and English equally well. She is accustomed to do conversation by mixing two different languages to her children. In the conversation, the children are able to imitate and remember the words and phrases produced by parent. Further, this study also finds that the ways children attempt to master language are noticeable that they were expected to be able to mix two languages appropriately in their activities. Briefly, the children and their parent do bilingualism to support their literacy development in learning English.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve students’ listening skills using podcast in Spotify application. This research utilized a pre-experimental design with a quantitative approach involving 30 samples of students from MA EL-BAYAN Majenang. The research instruments were pre-tests and post-tets, which consisted of 40 questions based on the application used. The results of this research showed that the students’ listening skill after using podcast in spotify application was improved up to 55.5% from the mean pre-tests score 40.67 to mean post-tests score 63.25. Furthermore, the results of significance values was 0.001 < 0.05, it means that the students’ listening skills using podcasts in Spotify application significantly improved. In other words, Alternative Hypothesis was accepted and Null Hypothesis is rejected. Furthermore, it can be concluded that  the use of podcast in spotify application was improve for students’ listening skill on narrative text at grade XI of MA EL-BAYAN Majenang. Based on the research result above, the use of podcast in spotify application was improve for students’ listening skill on narrative text at grade XI of MA EL-BAYAN Majenang. The researcher suggests that the English teachers should use podcast in spotify application for teaching-learning process, especially in listening skill. The researcher also suggests that the student should have more practice in listening skill to improve their abilities. Keywords: Listening Skill, Narrative Text, Podcast in Spotify Application

Abstract

The research entitled “Using the Communicative Language Teaching Method to Improve the Students’ English Speaking Fluency” aims to examine the implementation of CLT method in the classroom, figure out the students’ improvement in English speaking fluency, and reveal the influencing factors after the implementation of CLT method. This research used the quasi experimental design. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Purwokerto in the academic year of 2019/2020. The population was 340 students divided into 10 classes. The samples of this research were two classes: XI MIPA 1 as the experimental group and XI MIPA 3 as the control group. The data were collected from observations, questionnaires, and tests. The result of this research shows that the implementation of CLT method was successful. It can be seen from the observation sheet that the teacher followed the implementation of CLT method, such as the teacher had prepared the materials well; the materials were approved by the teacher which based on the syllabus and curriculum; the teacher clearly gave the instructions; the teacher asked the students to speak freely, encouraged the students to speak in English, fully spoke in English, and provided the appropriate tasks to improve the students’ speaking fluency. Furthermore, the students’ English speaking fluency has improved. It means that the implementation of CLT method has significant effect that the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. The result of questionnaires and observations show that the factors influencing the implementation of CLT method were cognitive, linguistic, and affective factors.
