Abstract

Mantra (spell) is the oldest poem in oral literature used as a kind of prayer and hope to God through His creation. This research goals to describe the structure and meaning of the text found in Alas Purwo spells entitled "Restoring magic" using Riffaterre's semiotic theory. Qualitative methods and descriptive analysis are used as research method. The analysis is focused on structural analysis of themes and diction, followed by Riffaterre's semiotic analysis to discuss four things, namely the unsustainability of expression, heueristic and hermeneutic readings, matrices or keywords, and hypograms or intertexts. The results showed that the theme of the mantra is the wish from spell practitioner delivered to the Lord of the universe, while the diction is denotative and connotative. The unsustainable expression in the form of replacement of meaning is found in the use of the synecdoche; deviation of the meaning of the spell, found in the nonsense language style; while the creation of the meaning of spell is dominated by homologues. Heuristic reading uses Indonesian conventions, while hermeneutic reading shows the hope of the spell reader to return the evil magic to its owner. The matrix or keyword in the spell lies in “tekobi bae bae wong kang seja ala maring ingsun”, moreover the spell hypogram is based on verses of the Koran. The meaning of the spell is by having supernatural power, someone is able to restore evil intentions from others under the Creator’s authorization.

Abstract

This study relies on cultural political issues in the Sinden novel to be analyzed using the concept of Roland Barthes mythology. The mythology looks at the form of speech, including a literary work that reflects and reduces social discourse, cultural, ideological and historical. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method. The analysis has two stages of the sign system. The first system is the sign of denotative sign reading that takes the structural data covering themes, characters, conflicts, and settings that will produce signs. The results mark the first sign of the system as a new marker for a myth reading on both sign system. The reading of the myth in the Sinden novel generates political discourse cultures that reflect events in Indonesia with 1960s background. This study aims to describe the cultural issues covered by political interests and reveal the impact of cultural-political events experienced by the grassroots and increase appreciation of the reader in understanding the Sinden novel.

Abstract

Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online novels have been ecranized into a television anime series, going from four volume novels to 25 episodes. However, in this article the material object is a twovolume novel which is ecranized into 14 episodes. This research using qualitative method aims to understand the changes that occur from the novel version to the television series version by using the theory of ecranization. The results of the study show that in the ecranization process there are three changes, namely shrinking, adding, and varying changes. These three changes had positive impacts, including the sequencing of episodes which made it easier for viewers who had not read the novel version to understand, and the television series version could be enjoyed by more viewers. The novels and television series Sword Art Online provide an overview of the metaverse technology created by Mark Zuckerberg by combining the real and virtual worlds. The work has affinities with metaverse concepts such as 3D virtual space, avatars, and full immersion. However, the sophistication of this technology has received criticism because it has the potential to cause addiction to the virtual world.
