Peran guru profesional dalam pembelajaran sangat penting sebagai kunci keberhasilan belajar peserta didik dan menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualitas. Guru profesional adalah guru yang kompeten dalam membangun dan mengembangkan proses pembelajaran yang baik dan efektif sehingga dapat menghasilkan peserta didik yang pintar dan pendidikan yang berkualitas. Kualitas pembelajaran juga perlu diukur dengan penilaian yang berorientasi pada Keterampilan Berpikir Tingkat Tinggi atau Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS). Berdasarkan hasil riset dan observasi yang telah dilakukan oleh beberapa ahli, ditemukan bahwa guru-guru masih kesulitan dalam menciptakan dan membuat soal-soal yang dapat meningkatkan daya nalar siswa dan kemampuan berfikir tingkat tinggi siswa atau yang berbasis HOTS (High Order Thinking Skill). Oleh karena itu pembekalan mengenai konsep task berorientasi HOTS masih perlu dilaksanakan. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di SMP N 21 Padang kepada guru-guru Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam 2 tahap yaitu pemberian materi mengenai teknik penilaian berbentuk task yang berorientasi HOTS serta perancangan teknik penilaian berbentuk task yang berorientasi HOTS. Kegiatan ini bermanfaat bagi guru terutama guru Bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mereka mengenai bentuk dan teknik penilaian berorientasi HOTS.

Abstract This study aims to determine the effect of using the Time Token Arend strategy on the ability to speak English in class VIII MTsN 1 Mentawai Islands. This research is a quantitative research that uses a pre-experimental method, with a one group pre-test-posttest design. In the experimental class, treatment is given using the Time Token Arend strategy. The population of this study is class VIII MTsN 1 Mentawai Islands academic year 2021/2022, totaling 78 people consisting of 3 classes namely VIII 1, VIII 2 and VIII 3. The sample class is determined by homogeneity and normality tests, which are selected as experimental classes is VIII 2. The instrument used is a speaking test. The results of the students' English speaking ability scores were analyzed using the pre-test and post-test patterns. After averaging, the average pretest score is 60.56 and the posttest average is 74.08. After the t-test, it is known that the t-count value is greater than the t-tables value (9.14> 2.06). Testing this hypothesis is done by t-table test, after doing t-count = 9.14 is greater than t-tables = 2.06 in the level of significance of 0.05. Thus, the findings state that the hypothesis in this study is accepted, because using the time token arend strategy has an effect on students' English speaking skills. Keywords: Effectiveness, Time Token Arend, Speaking Ability AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan strategi Time Token Arend terhadap kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII MTsN 1 Kepulauan Mentawai. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang menggunakan metode pra eksperimen, dengan rancangan one group pre-test-posttest design. Pada kelas eksperimen diberikan perlakuan dengan menggunakan strategi Time Token Arend. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII MTsN 1 Kepulauan Mentawai tahun ajaran 2021/2022 yang berjumlah 78 orang yang terdiri dari 3 kelas yaitu VIII 1, VIII 2 dan VIII 3. Kelas sampel ditentukan dengan uji homogenitas dan normalitas, yang dipilih sebagai kelas eksperimen adalah VIII 2. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes berbicara. Hasil skor kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa dianalisis dengan menggunakan pola pre-test dan post-test. Setelah dirata-ratakan, rata-rata nilai pretest adalah 60,56 dan rata-rata posttest adalah 74,08. Setelah dilakukan uji t diketahui bahwa nilai t hitung lebih besar dari nilai t tabel (9,14 > 2,06). Pengujian hipotesis ini dilakukan dengan uji t-tabel, setelah dilakukan t-hitung = 9,14 lebih besar dari t-tabel = 2,06 pada taraf signifikansi 0,05. Dengan demikian, temuan tersebut menyatakan bahwa hipotesis dalam penelitian ini diterima, karena penggunaan strategi time token arend berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa.Kata kunci: Efektivitas, Time Token Arend, Kemampuan Berbicara

English Teacher’s Code Switching in The Classroom (A Case Study in Grade IX of SMK 10 Padang) Dian Mega Putri

This research aims to reveal the attitudes of the teacher in using code switching in the classroom from English (or shorten by L2) to the Indonesian language (or shorten by L1) or vice versa and also to find out the functions of teacher’s switching to the L1 in practice in Grade IX of SMK 10 Padang. The descriptive qualitative research method is used to analyze teachers’ code switching to Indonesian language through the observation and interview. The subject in this research is an English teacher who taught in grade IX of SMK 10 Padang. Based on the analysis of the data, it can be concluded that the code switching used by the teacher in the classroom plays a positive role in the process of teaching and learning. Moreover, the functions of code switching used by the teacher in the classroom are in order to explain vocabulary, give grammar instruction, emphasize some points, manage the class, index a stance of empathy or solidarity towards students.

This article aims to analyse the task instruction of speaking tasks in an English student’s book for grade X that Balitbang Kemdikbud publishes. As the first edition of the textbook, some inaccuracies might be found especially related to task instruction. This is descriptive research with checklist evaluation as the instrument of the research. The checklist evaluation of task instruction consists of six sub-indicators. Four evaluators, the English teachers who use the book, fulfilled the checklist evaluation. Based on the findings, six chapters of the book have salience task instruction, seven chapters have succinct task instructions, eight chapters have sufficient task instruction, seven chapters in the book have standardised task instruction, and all chapters in the book have the sequence in the task instruction, and also the task instruction in the textbook has a clear target of the task. In short, the task instruction of speaking task already fulfils the criteria of good task instruction. However, several criteria need to be revised.

The essential role of professional teacher in teaching and learning process is a key in achieving successful learning outcome. A professional teacher is a competent teacher who is able to build and develop good and effective teaching and learning process in order to create smart and good quality students. Based on the observation and previous study done by some experts, there are many teachers who still face difficulties in creating HOTS based Reading Assessment that can develop students higher thinking skills. So that, a workshop and training about HOTS’ based assessment of reading need to be deliver to teachers. This training and workshop was done in SMP N 33 Padang in 2 types of activity; the workshop about reading assessment and training of reading assessment of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) Based. This activity is very essential and helpful for teachers in order to enrich their knowledge about assessment of Reading based HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) Based optimizing literacy

Abstract Classroom management is very important for the teacher to be success in the classroom. If the teacher can manage the classroom, so the teaching and learning process will run well but they cannot manage the classroom, therefore the students will be difficult to be controlled. It can be inferred that a teacher needs to have knowledge and experience in managing the classroom. It is positive and comfortable atmosphere in the classroom. Based on this ideas, the lecturers of English department from UPGRISBA interested to give practice and presentation in the SMP John Febby Padang. It is caused that this is a new private school, so it needs good image to invite the students want to study in this school. Keywords: English Teachers, Positive Learning Environment Abstrak Managemen kelas sangat menentukan kesuksesan seorang guru dalam mengajar. Jika guru sudah bisa mengatur kelasnya dengan baik maka berikutnya proses belajar dan mengajar akan bisa berjalan dengan baik tapi sebaliknya jika guru tidak dapat memanage kelasnya dengan baik otomatis ruangan kelas akan sangat berat untuk diatur. Dengan ini dapat dimaknai bahwa guru perlu memiliki pengeathuan dan pengalaman untuk sukses dalam mengatur dan menguasai kelasnya. Salah satu hal yang dapat mendukung terciptanya managemen kelas adalah lingkungan belajar yang positive dan menyenangkan. Berdasarkan hal ini makanya tim dosen Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris melaksanakan pengabdian di SMP John Febby Padang. Ini dilihat dari sekolah swasta ini merupakan sekolah yang masih baru dan juga masih dalam proses pembangunan dan perkembangan untuk menambah jumlah siswa yang mau berproses di sekolah ini. Untuk itu sekolah ini sangat mebutuhkan sekali image yang positive untuk dapat menjadi langkah promosi, sehingga jumlah siswa yang akan berproses bertambah banyak hendaknya. ABSTRACTThis research is motivated by the use of reading strategies by English students based on gender in the classroom. The study used a survey research design involving 38 students of English education study program consisting of 15 male students and 23 female students. Data were collected using the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire developed by Mokhtari and Sheory (2002). Data were analyzed using a survey and statistical test independent sample t-test was conducted to determine the differences between women and men. The results of the analysis using the independent sample t-test showed that there was no significant difference in all subscales of gender differences in the use of reading strategies. Thus, gender does not play a role in determining the reading strategy used.Keywords: Gender, English Students, Reading Strategy.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kepercayaan guru dalam penggunaan Youtube sebagai media pembelajaran dalam mengajar Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan case study dengan jumlah 1 orang responden guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengajar menggunakan media youtube di SMAN 5 Sijunjung. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi ceklis, catatan lapangan dan wawancara dalam bentuk semi-struktur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru Bahasa Inggris di SMAN 5 Sijunjung memiliki kepercayaan direct transmission dalam penggunaan youtube sebagai media pembelajaran.

This research was based by the interest of researchers to find the methods used by prospective PI English teachers in Padang. The purpose of this research is to find out what methods are used by prospective English teachers . The implementation uses several methods in learning, especially in learning English. This research is a qualitative research. The instrument used is an observation checklist. Data was collected from micro teaching video recordings which were then analyzed based on the observation checklist. The observation checklist is based on the Discover Learning and Problem-Based Learning methods which are then analyzed for the learning process in the recording. The results of this study were found that as many as 8 prospective teachers used Discovery Learning in learning while 2 prospective teachers used Problem-Based Learning in learning in the Micro Teaching class. The conclusion of this study is that all the learning carried out by prospective English teachers is good even though they use different methods. The suggestion is that prospective English teachers should be able to teach it in every phase of the learning method so that the learning objectives can be achieved.
