Abstract

North Arm Sulawesi is a triple junction between three convergent plates which results in development of geological structures at all scales, thereby triggering the potential for land motion. Lolak Dam is an infrastructure that functions as a water reservoir which is then channeled for domestic needs. This research aims to identify safety factors of the Lolak Dam slopes where land motion occurs several times. Field data in the form of lithology was carried out by geomechanical testing in the form of specific gravity, cohesion, and internal shear angle. The analysis was carried out on the slopes of the Lolak Dam on the left backrest which is a spillway area. The method used is Bishop with the help of the Slide v.6 Program. Lithological in the research area obtained gray claystone, red claystone, chert slate, sandstone, and basalt. Safety factors result which using the Slide program are 1.517 (Stable) in slope 1, 1,260 (Stable) in slope 2, and 0.745 (unstable) in slope 3.

Abstract

This research focuses on villages where the community mostly works in the small-scale gold mining sector (ASGM), namely Hulawa Village and Buladu Village, North Gorontalo Regency. Mercury has remained being used by the community in this location for gold processing since a long time. It is important to increase the environmental literacy of the community around the ASGM area considering the dangers of mercury to health and the environment. This study aims to improve the environmental literacy of the community around ASGM regarding the mercury dangers to health and environment. Raising the community environmental literacy is carried out through a mercury dangers awareness campaign by playing videos of mercury dangers, distributing mercury-free gold processing leaflets, resources person explanation concerning mercury impact. Public knowledge about the dangers of mercury before and after the campaign was measured through questions. This study shows that there is a rise in the number of people who understand the dangers of mercury after a mercury awareness campaign. The increase in the number of people who understand the mercury dangers shows that audio-visual and printed media are effectively used to increase public awareness of the dangers of mercury in ASGM areas.

Abstract

Based on the analysis result, the research sites are divided into three levels of mass movement vulnerability; low as much as 10,98, moderate as much as 84,41, and high as much as 4,61% out of the entire research areasMass movement occurs due to the natural process in the changes of surface structure, in which there is a disturbance of stability in the soil or rocks making up the slope. The disturbance is caused by some conditions such as a relatively steep slope, the condition of rock or soil making the slope, high rainfall intensity, uncontrolled human activity in exploiting the nature as well as the state of geological structures. The research site is located in three sub-districts in Bone Bolango District; Suwawa Timur, Suwawa Tengah, and Suwawa Selatan. These three sub-districts have a history of mass movement during the rainy season. The availability of up-to-date data is required to reduce the impact caused by the mass movement. This research aims to identify the areas prone to mass movement. One of the approaches applied to identify the areas prone to mass movement is Storie Index method by calculating the parameter, which is considered influencing the mass movement. Among others, the parameters are steepness of the slope, rainfall, type of soil, land usability, and lineament density as the parameter of geological structures.
