Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the evaluation of computational thinking ability in understanding the limits of algebraic functions for students majoring in Tadris mathematics at Lhokseumawe State Islamic Institute. The research subjects were 1st semester students, totaling 6 students. Data collection techniques in this study used computational thinking ability tests and interviews, and then the data were analyzed based on computational thinking indicators, namely decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithm thinking, generalization, and abstraction. The results obtained from high computational thinking ability indicators that can be completed perfectly are decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithm thinking, and generalization/abtraction. With moderate computational thinking ability, students have been able to solve problems perfectly for indicators of decomposition and pattern recognition, but for indicators of thinking algorithms and generalizations or abstractions, they are still less precise. Low computational thinking ability has been able to measure decomposition indicators, but for pattern recognition indicators, thinking algorithms are still less precise in solving, while generalization and abstraction indicators do not answer.

Abstract

The initial abilities of students in the Integral Calculus course reveal that many have not yet grasped the fundamental concepts of integration. Out of 20 students given integral problems, only 6 students (30%) were able to answer correctly, while 14 students (70%) made errors. These errors in the Calculus course need to be analyzed further to assist lecturers and students in identifying weaknesses in the learning process and address or at least reduce similar mistakes in the future. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with 20 second-semester students from the Mathematics Education program at IAIN Lhokseumawe as the research subjects. The findings indicate that students with very high and high computational thinking skills did not make errors compared to those with moderate, low, and low computational thinking skills. Students with moderate computational thinking skills tended to make errors in processing and answer writing. In contrast, students with low and very low computational thinking skills more frequently encountered transformation, processing, and answer-writing errors. Transformation errors occur when students make mistakes in calculations or during the process skill stage. These errors are often caused by students’ difficulty structuring solution steps, leading to misunderstanding the problems. Most students were also unable to reformulate the problems into forms suitable for the appropriate solution method, resulting in their inability to proceed with the calculations. Based on the error analysis using Newman’s Error Analysis (NEA) method, the most common types identified were transformation, processing, and answer-writing errors.

Abstract

Abstract

The high-order thinking skills of students in Indonesia are classified as low, this is in line with the results of diagnostic tests conducted in class IX junior high school. Thus, it is necessary to develop digital media based on multimedia and constructivist cognitive theory with cultural context as one of the alternative solution. This study aims to (1) develop digital learning media based on constructivist and cognitive multimedia theories with a cultural context that fulfills the categories of validity, practicality and effectiveness; and (2) improve students' high-order thinking skills after using these media in the learning process. The research subjects were 30 students in class IX junior high school and the research objects were digital learning media based on constructivist theory and cognitive multimedia with a cultural context to improve students' high-level thinking skills on the topic of dilation. This is a research design with the Plomp model, which consists of (1) Preliminary research; (2) Prototyping phase; and (3) Assessment phase. The research instruments used were interviews, questionnaires and tests. The results showed that the product developed was included in the very valid, very practical, and effective category, where: (a) classical learning completeness reached 97%; (b) positive response by product users reached 97%; and (c) the N-Gain value was 0.791 in the very high category. Thus, it can be stated that the product meets the quality standard criteria, where the product can be used to improve students' high-level thinking abilities.
