Abstract

This study is motivated by the high prevalence of hypertension among the elderly and the complexity of psychosocial factors that influence their quality of life. The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of social support and self-efficacy on the quality of life of elderly individuals with hypertension, with resilience as a mediating variable. The research employed an explanatory quantitative design with a sample of 122 elderly individuals with hypertension at Puskesmas Nanggalo Padang selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and then analyzed using SEM-PLS through SmartPLS to examine the structural relationships among variables. The results indicate that social support and self-efficacy positively affect quality of life, both directly and indirectly through resilience as a mediator, demonstrating that these three variables complement one another in enhancing the adaptive capacity of elderly individuals facing chronic conditions. These findings imply that psychosocial-based interventions, such as strengthening family support, enhancing self-efficacy, and providing resilience training, need to be developed in primary healthcare services to improve the quality of life of elderly individuals with hypertension.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between online self-presentation and emotional dependency in online relationships among university students in Bandar Lampung, examining the mediating role of loneliness between both variables. Using a phenomenological approach grounded in bottom-up methodology, this research integrates qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed methods). In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 purposively selected students to understand their lived experiences regarding self-presentation on digital platforms. Qualitative findings were then used to construct hypotheses and measurement instruments in the quantitative phase involving 247 students from various universities in Bandar Lampung. Quantitative data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with bootstrapping to test the mediation effect. Results indicate that idealized online self-presentation positively and significantly correlates with emotional dependency (β = 0.42; p < .001). Loneliness was found to partially mediate this relationship (indirect effect = 0.18; 95% CI [0.09; 0.28]). Phenomenological findings reveal that students construct digital identities as a compensatory mechanism for feelings of social rejection in physical environments, ultimately reinforcing cycles of emotional dependency in virtual relationships. The implications of this study are relevant for developing campus-based digital literacy programs and psychological interventions.

Abstract

Children's mental health is a crucial aspect of psychological development that is influenced by various family-related factors, particularly supportive parenting practices and the quality of family communication. This study aims to examine the effects of supportive parenting and family communication on the mental health of school-aged children in Bogor City. A quantitative approach with a correlational-predictive survey design was employed. The sample consisted of 312 children aged 8–12 years and their parents, selected using proportionate stratified random sampling from four districts in Bogor City. Data were collected using the Supportive Parenting Scale, the Family Communication Scale, and the Children's Mental Health Scale, all of which demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.891, 0.876, and 0.903, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The findings revealed that supportive parenting had a positive and significant effect on children's mental health (β = 0.431; p < 0.001), as did family communication (β = 0.359; p < 0.001). Simultaneously, both variables explained 67.3% of the variance in children's mental health (R² = 0.673; F = 317.82; p < 0.001). These findings indicate that supportive parenting and effective family communication serve as important protective factors in promoting children's mental health. Therefore, strengthening parenting education programs and improving the quality of family communication should be prioritized as part of promotive and preventive efforts to enhance children's mental well-being in both school and community settings.
