Abstract

Theory and practice are often seen in opposition with one another in some architectural dialogues, despite their significant transformative capabilities. The first issue of ARSNET aims to dissolve such opposing relation by exploring how theory and practice weave and intersect in various architectural design inquiries. The articles in this issue investigate how the entanglements of theory and practice enable a precise reading of the contours of design knowledge, expand the interpretation of architectural spatialities, and drive a reflective awareness towards the progression of design processes.
Telling stories, performing operations as a design method Kristanti Dewi Paramita

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | Full PDF (127.186 KB) | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v1i2.26

Abstract

Exploration of stories in architectural discourse has yet to generate a structured discussion in the methods of its operations as part of a design endeavour. This issue of ARSNET presents a collection of articles that demonstrates a variety of everyday stories emerging from the experience of space and objects, and outlines the methodologies of their corresponding spatial operations. Through the stories of occupying, manoeuvring, navigating, dispersing, and sensing, this issue highlights various methods of spatial operations. With operations ranging from tracing as a way of revealing space, reduction as manoeuvring strategy, connecting the virtual and the real as a way of finding new meaning and use of space, and creating a spatial atmosphere based on trajectories of senses; the issue expands the discussion of stories-driven architectural design methods.
A sensorial foray into architecture Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET Vol. 2 No. 1 (2022)

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | Full PDF (143.251 KB) | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v2i1.52

Abstract

Discussion of a sensory-driven architecture emphasises the need for a deeper and more holistic understanding of space. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET presents a variety of methods for engaging with the sensorial experience. These articles explore the process of measuring, interpreting, tracing, and constructing the spatial elements and spatial processes driven by sensorial stimulants, driving different projections of space. From the emergence of architecture that is more responsive to the diverse and subjective body needs in space to architecture that responds towards natural qualities as well as natural processes. Some articles also enable propositions of architectural form and programming with sensory-induced spatialities and temporalities. Through such projections, the issue creates multiple possibilities for sensory-driven design objectives which transcend contexts, practices and users, significantly expanding the sensory architecture discourse.
Architecture as a projection of multiplicities Kristanti Dewi Paramita

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | Full PDF (122.797 KB) | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v2i2.63

Abstract

The architectural discussion of multiplicity moves beyond the preoccupation with architecture as a fixed, conclusive, and eternal entity. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET investigates the multidimensionality of architecture. The explorations in this issue span from the discussion of multi-layered meaning and temporalities of architecture, to the dynamic representation and spatial operation of multiplicities. Through inquiries on multiplicity-driven design methods, this issue projects the expanded and open field of architecture, appreciating the different forces and processes of society.
Architecture and the subconscious Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET Vol. 3 No. 1 (2023)
Publisher : Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v3i1.76

Abstract

The subconscious thinking governs the way the built environment is experienced and organised by its inhabitants. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET explores how our subconscious thinking provides alternative spatial narrative and design methods. The explorations in this issue highlight the different conditions and realms of the subconscious, as well as the various ways of learning and making driven by subjective subconsciousness. These inquiries offer deep thought on how the focus on subconscious thinking reveals hidden experiences and knowledge of architecture, as well as celebrating speculations and open-ended qualities that allow architecture to evolve.
Reinventing architecture through interpretation and reproduction Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET Vol. 3 No. 2 (2023)
Publisher : Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v3i2.91

Abstract

Reinvention of architecture searches for new ways of interpreting and reproducing the materiality, the representation, and the critical discourse of architecture. Technological shifts, socio-cultural changes, the existence of new media become the primary driver of such reinvention. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET explores the different perspectives and urgencies of reinventing architecture. In doing so, the continuous quest of architectural reinvention enables a thorough and deep reading on the various dimensions and articulation of space.
In search of rules for creative design process Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET Vol. 4 No. 1 (2024)
Publisher : Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v4i1.109

Abstract

Architecture is driven by a set of rules which governs design actions and practices; which vary depending on the expected design objectives and intentions. The collection of articles in this ARSNET issue provides different perspectives that revisit the manifestation of rules in the design process. This edition highlights how rules do not only apply to form-making in the quest for beauty, nor it is limited to the social and cultural constraints that create a rather fixed and limited design manoeuvre. Through this issue's investigation of rules in design pedagogy and practice across contexts, some new objectives of rules in design are offered, demonstrating a more fluid and open manifestation of rules in the creative design process.
The other narratives of architecture Paramita, Kristanti Dewi
ARSNET Vol. 4 No. 2 (2024)
Publisher : Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v4i2.127

Abstract

The other narrative of architecture expands possibilities of architectural design methods that pay attention to other temporalities, realities, and subjects of architecture. The collection of articles in this ARSNET issue provides investigations that revisit how narratives exist as the basis of architectural experience and design methods. Technological advancements create tools, platforms, and living needs that enable different ways of revealing, producing, and speculating architectural narratives. Through this issue's investigation of the other narratives, alternative situations of architecture are reconstructed.
Architecture in flux Paramita, Kristanti Dewi
ARSNET Vol. 5 No. 2 (2025)
Publisher : Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.7454/arsnet.v5i2.175

Abstract

Architecture exists in flux, shaped by the rapid social, cultural, and environmental transformation in current society. The articles in this edition of ARSNET explore various contexts and design methodologies that emerge amidst such rapid and often disruptive changes. The study discusses different conditions produced by such changes, from the inevitability of time that leads to deterioration, environmental pressures that create separation from nature, to high rates of urbanisation that led to limitation of living space and changes to users' livelihood. Discussions elaborated in this edition outline how architecture in flux may lead to alternative design approaches. These approaches range from construction practices that celebrate impermanence; design operations that value neglected, incomplete, and hidden areas; architecture that calls for reconnection with nature; to exploration of adaptive and inclusive objects and spatialities for multiplicities of users. In doing so, this edition highlights the changing processes and relationships of the built environment in the state of flux, towards architecture that continuously evolves and celebrates change.
