Abstract

Abstract Fishermen who live on the coast of Doreri Bay are the main stakeholders in the management of coral reef ecosystems in the area. Therefore, sustainable coral reef management requires their participation and support. This study aims to determine the perceptions of traditional fishermen about non-market value and non-use value, as well as the main threats to coral reef resources. The research was conducted in October-November 2018. A total of 70 traditional fishermen from 15 villages on the coast of Doreri Bay were selected as respondents. Data processing is done by tabulation method, namely the compilation of data into a formal pattern that has been designed. The results of data processing were then analyzed with a quantitative approach. The results show that traditional fishermen in Doreri Bay have a good understanding of the non-market value and non-use value of coral reef resources. Fishermen also view that the main threats to the preservation of coral reef resources are waste and garbage, as well as the use of destructive fishing gear. Despite having a good understanding of the importance of coral reef resources, compliance with the rules in protecting the environment is still low. Therefore, efforts are needed to develop, supervise, enforce rules/laws, and alternatively improve the family economy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Turtles are reptiles that spend most of their lives in marine waters and will return to land to release their eggs at the location where they were hatched. However, changes in land use that cause damage to coastal habitats, catching turtles on land and taking their eggs as well as the threat of predators can cause a decrease in turtle populations. One effort to overcome this is through hatchling breeding activities as was done in Meinyumfoka Village, Manokwari Regency. The objective of the activity is to support community-based conservation through the provision of supporting facilities and community awareness. This activity begins with a site survey, observation and assistance with needs in the captive area, analysis of material needs and costs, organizational activities, and realization of a work plan. This activity was carried out in November-December 2021 in Meinyumfoka Village. The results achieved were the availability of one hatchling hatchery facility measuring 300 cm x 170 cm x 60 cm, three posters for turtle conservation socialization media, and one tourist gazebo. The addition of facilities to the turtle hatchery ecotourism area is expected to bring economic benefits to the surrounding community and also provide benefits for turtle conservation. Abstract

Background: Areas that were once Cultivation Rights (HGU) in Manokwari Selatan District are the subject of this research. Residents must follow the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) to use the land. This study aims to identify the potential for land development and analyze the current spatial allocation and arrangement in the former HGU area. Methods: Using system dynamic analysis, the study combined qualitative and quantitative approaches through observations and interviews. Result: The results show that once HGU areas could be developed into plantations or agriculture. This finding is based on land capability evaluated by considering ecological factors and local wisdom. Land use policies should be tailored to the potential and availability of land in this context. To increase the use of agricultural and plantation land, crop types suitable for soil capability can be selected based on land suitability. This research emphasizes the effect of policies on Kampung Gedi Merah's population growth. Using strategies to suppress the population growth rate is expected to reduce land conversion that is not by the RTRW spatial pattern. In 2023, 904 lived in this area without indicating land conversion. One of the critical challenges identified is the projected 33% decrease in land availability by 2030. Therefore, its land use needs to remain cording to RTRW directives. This research also provides recommendations to the local government to develop the potential of this land further so that interference with community use and control can be avoided.

Abstract

The vulnerability of mangrove habitats to environmental changes driven by anthropogenic activities and climate change is a critical concern for sustainable ecosystem management. This study assesses the vulnerability of mangrove habitats along the coastal area of Biak Timur District, Papua, using the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) method. The CVI integrates five key variables: coastline profile, duration of tidal inundation, maximum tidal inundation height, salinity, and substrate type. Coastline profile data were derived from a decadal analysis (2013–2023) of shoreline changes. Tidal inundation duration and height were obtained through tidal data analysis, while salinity and substrate data were collected through field surveys and laboratory analyses. Each variable was scored and weighted within the CVI framework. The results indicate that the mangrove habitat in Biak Timur is in the "high vulnerability" category, with a CVI score of 5.69. This suggests a significant susceptibility to degradation from environmental changes, particularly those caused by human activities and climate change. Effective management should focus on minimising anthropogenic impacts and promoting sustainable use of mangrove resources.
