Abstract. Through Javanese lyrical poem “macapatâ€, Ranggawarsita delivered his social critiques toward the Solo’s royal family disgraceful behaviors in the middle of XIX century. The substance of the critiques, however, is still actual for the Indonesia in the Reformation Order since this order practices corruption, collusion, and nepotism worse. Ranggawarsita’s moral messages that are still actual up to the present are: (1) the lack of role model of leadership’s behaviors resulting in country depravity; (2) intelligence without morality causing misfortune; (3) no matter how happy the forgetful people, being happier those who are alert and still remember; sticking to the truth one to be despite his surrounding doing greedy; (4) the religious leaders and intellectuals having to be standing up for temptation. Key words: moral message, macapat, coruption, state leaders, cultural resistence

In his reaction towards the prohibition for children under 15 to stay at home before 7 at the evening, Alva tries to discover the reason behind this prohibition. He does not believe in what other children believe that there is a supernatural power represented by Delman Merah Jambu (pink horse cart) rode by a beautiful lady in white clothes. . This study reveals the types of domestic violence in “Sweat†by Zora Neale Hurston and “Woman Hollering Creek†by Sandra Cisneros. The discussion will involve the types of abuse, the reactions of the victims, and the similarities and differences about the abuse in the two selected short stories. This study is designed to interpret phenomena of life associated to domestic violence reflected in the selected stories. Thus, this is a qualitative study. As the discussion is focused on the characters’ psychological aspects, the extrinsic approach is applied. The study finds out that the types of domestic violence that exist in the stories are emotional/psychological violence and physical violence and the victims of the abuse response somewhat differently to the abuse. The reactions of the abuse victim in Hurston’s “Sweat†include taking the violent silently and then to be moved to fight back, and the reactions of the abuse victim in Cisneros “Woman Hollering Creek†include  taking the violent silently and then making an effort to be free from the abuse by getting help from other people. The analysis also shows that the two short stories contain both similarities and differences.

This study aims to reveal gay habitus in Becky Albertalli's Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda. This study is descriptive qualitative which applies both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is applied due to the fact that the study deals with the characterization of the main character in the novel. Moreover, the sociological approach is applied because the study is primarily concerned with a social phenomenon reflected in literary work as the novel portrays the representation of gay habitus reflected in the attitude and behaviours of one of the main characters in the novel. In revealing the gay habitus reflected in the novel, Bourdieu's theory of habitus is applied. The discussion is focused on the Simon's habitation as a gay and the factors that contribute to the formation of Simon's habitus as a gay. The result of the study shows that Simon develops gay habitus. The representations of his gay habitus include are having no attraction to the opposite sex, adoring the same sex, obsessing and fantasizing about the same sex, feeling jealous and cynical to the suspected competitors, and falling in love with the same sex. There are two factors that support the development of Simon's gay habitus i.e. primary and secondary socialization.

This study aims to reveal rebellion of main character in Lauren DeStefano’s Wither. The discussion is focused on Rhine’s rebellion which is trigerred by dystopian-life happened in the society. In revealing the rebellion reflected in the novel, Mercuse’s theory of rebellion and Millner’s theory of dystopian-life are applied. The research method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative with intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Based on the analysis, the writer finds out that among the nine dystopian society characteristics, the writer has found five characteristics that are reflected in Wither, namely the society is an illusion of utopia world; the natural world is being a banished and distrusted world; perception under constant surveillance; fear ot the outside world; and information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. In addition, the analysis of the main character’s rebellion shows that the rebellion happens as the impact of dystopian society faced by the main character. Rhine’s rebellion is done in four ways – having intention to escape from Linden’s house, refusing to be consummated by her husband, having relationship with Gabriel, and escaping. The reasons of Rhine’s rebellion are wanting to be reunited with her brother and wanting to have freedom. After doing the analysis, the writer finds out that science and technology should be developed for human’s better condition. Science and technology must not be expected beyond God’s power. When science and technology is developed without consideration in terms of humanity, it will result in chaosness.
